  5. Harpo and Chico Marx recreated the silverware gag from ANIMAL CRACKERS on THE COLGATE COMEDY HOUR on NBC on this date in 1952.

Cutlery was strategically loaded into Harpo’s coat by his son Bill, who became Harpo's prop man at age 12.

"He had faith in me when I was very young," Bill said. "He was a great man."

  6. Why Lacan Loved Harpo Marx

"Harpo is an automatic object-machine that converts both the world and himself into a polymorphously perverse source of jouissance.”

  7. Habeas Irish Rose comment by Groucho is referencing "Abie's Irish Rose", an extremely popular play about a Jewish man and Irish Woman's relationship. Popular as the "East Lynne" play for decades.

  9. ANIMAL CRACKERS (1930) just entered the public domain and it's already on Tubi (and elsewhere).

I remember its 1979 TV premiere on CBS, after decades of unavailability due to rights issues.

I hope a new generation discovers the Marx Bros. now, just like I did then.

  11. If any #Comedon viewers want a movie with Zeppo Marx in it, this is *not* their week. Zeppo's last role was 1933's Duck Soup (the first #Comedon watch party) and this week is 1937's 100% Zeppo-free A Day at the Races.

When Zeppo retired the studio tried to cut their collective salary. Groucho retorted "We're twice as funny without Zeppo!"

That may not actually be true as the films with Zeppo are usually considered the Brothers' real classics. He always played the straight man in them but after that role was taken by various random actors in the later films, it feels like maybe the family chemistry had been a little diluted. A Day at the Races was still a big hit because it's pretty dang funny.

Alas, we'll never be able to compare Zeppo's work as a straight man to Gummo, who he replaced, because Gummo quit while they were still doing Vaudeville and hadn't yet made a film. But speaking of Vaudeville, when they were doing live shows, Zeppo was so good at imitating each of his older brothers that he'd step in and do their parts when they were sick. He may not have had his own comedic character but he wasn't a stick in the mud.

Why am I talking about Zeppo if he's not in the film? I dunno. At least I didn't talk about possible origins for his name.

  12. Techdirt: Game Jam Winner Spotlight: Cocoanut Hotel. “1929 was the year the Marx Brothers made their film debut in The Cocoanuts, a movie where they ostensibly run a resort hotel but mostly just engage in their regular antics. Cocoanut Hotel adapts this career turning point for the famed comedians in both content and spirit, turning it into (what else?) a full-fledged hotel management sim. […]

  13. I love this. Harold Lloyd, silent movie star, gets a surprise visit from 'This is your Life' while at a hollywood restaurant; Groucho Marx happens to be seated nearby and can't help but chime in.

  14. 15 minutes of seriousness to go, and then it's time for #Comedon.

Today's the day for the first #Comedon online viewing party. Why Duck Soup, the Marx Brothers' 1933 pre-code political satire? So many reasons, but here's three:

    1. Groucho Marx as the leader of Freedonia
    2. The song "The Laws of My Administration"
    3. Mussolini banned it in Italy

    Today at 18:00 (6:00PM) Pacific Time/GMT+8

CW: Unsurprisingly, some of what was funny in 1933 is problematic now. I think we can acknowledge that and even talk about it without losing track of the parts that are still funny (and maybe a bit more relevant than they should be). Sex, gender, ethnicity, appearance, and war are all grist for jokes. One scene in particular makes a satirical metaphor out of what audiences would have recognized as minstrel show content without blackface.

Here's a link to watch the film for free on the Internet Archive and it can also be found on several paid streaming platforms.

  17. Someone reminded me that Duck Soup was released on this very day, November 17, back in 1933. The amazing mirror scene still reduces me to gales of laughter.
