"View from the Artist's Window," Martinus Rørbye, c. 1825.

Rørbye (1803-48) was one of the central artists of the Danish Golden Age of painting, in the first half of the 19th century, and this particular image is regarded as one of his best.

Painted when he was in his early 20s, we have a view from his parents' window at a navy yard with ships. It's loaded with symbols...the bird in the cage hanging at the window is him, about to break free and travel; the plants (including a pink geranium) show growth and development, and the blank book is waiting to be filled with sketches.

Rørbye was well-traveled for the era; he visited Norway and Sweden, and journeyed as far as Rome, Athens, and Constantinople. He even painted in the town of Skagen, a full fifty years before it became a popular artists' colony and home of the Skagen school. So the bird in the cage is a transition from his parents' home to exploring the wide world on one of those ships.

Udsigten fra Martinus Rørbyes forældres lejlighed på Københavns Havn er smuk. Men kanariefuglens bur er låst, stuerne er stille og udenfor vugger orlovsskibene lokkende.

Det trygge hjem overfor det uvisse eventyr? Det er den danske guldalder på fuldt blus. Rørbye kom afsted, men helbreddet haltede, og han døde i 1848, 45 år gammel.

Maleriet blev overdraget til museet i 1988, er fra 1823-1827, er måske samlingens bedst kendte vindue og meget passende for #fensterfreitag 🪟
