  6. For #MartinLutherKingDay, John Fugelsang's podcast will "focus on King’s living principles in the face of modern authoritarianism." And how "people are responding—not with violence, but with vigilance. With whistles, cameras, mutual aid, and rapid-response networks designed to protect neighbors and to document abuse. Dr. King is so much more than a marble statue - he’s still a model for nonviolent resistance. Nonviolent resistance to injustice matters more than ever." copy: @renewedresistance

  8. Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 🕊️

A day to remember his courage, his voice, and his unwavering commitment to justice, dignity, and love for humanity.

This day also holds a deep and meaningful connection for the Jewish community. Jewish leaders, rabbis, students, and allies stood shoulder to shoulder with Dr. King during the Civil Rights Movement, united by shared values rooted in Torah: justice, human dignity, and the belief that every person is created in the image of God.

From marching together in Selma, to shared prayers, shared risks, and shared hope, this partnership was built on moral responsibility and the understanding that silence in the face of injustice is not an option.

Dr. King once said that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” That message continues to echo across generations and communities.

Today, may we honor his legacy not only in words, but by choosing compassion, standing for one another

  13. Mistodon: was there anything else going on in America today? This was the only worthwhile event of any real importance: #MartinLutherKingDay takes place on the third Monday of January to remember the achievements of the martyred nonviolent #CivilRights activist Dr #MartinLutherKingJr. This monochrome #teletext portrait was drawn by @Horsenburger and included in the MIST0222 artpack collection released three years ago.

  15. My US-based employer gives American employees an annual day off on Martin Luther King Junior Day. This year, it's today, January 20th. It's somewhat ironic that today is Donald Trump's inauguration day. I'm sure they'll both be remembered in American history for a long time, for polar opposite reasons.

  18. Martin Luther King served 29 prison sentences himself - mostly for civil disobedience, but also judges were especially harsh if he broke the rules even a tiny bit. He went to prison in 1956 for driving 30 miles per hour in a 25-miles an hour zone.

  19. "Abbiamo imparato a volare come gli uccelli,
    a nuotare come i pesci,
ma non abbiamo ancora imparato la semplice arte di vivere insieme come fratelli".

  20. "Our Nation was born in genocide when it embraces the doctrine that the original American, the Indian, was an inferior race...We are perhaps the only nation which tried as a matter of national policy to wipe out its Indigenous Population. Moreover, we elevated that tragic experience into a noble crusade. Indeed, even today we have not permitted ourselves to reject or to feel remorse for this shameful episode." #MartinLutherKingJr
