A Cure for What Ails Us?

I have been reflecting lately on the peculiar sickness of modern life, and I have a theory which, stated somewhat like a math problem, is this: modern society (entailing economic, social, and labor practices) plus postmodern media (including communication technology, news consumption, and competing truth claims) leads to a kind of sickness. And the treatment for that sickness may be following Jesus through the historic practices of the Church.

My basic argument is this: for thousands of years, human beings lived in certain ways. Whether by divine design, adaptation, or some combination of the two, human bodies, minds, and spirits were set up for success while living a certain kind of life. People lived off to the land. They lived near extended family. Most people spent their lives in relatively small communities, surrounded by people they knew and who knew them. Work was physical and tangible. Information traveled slowly. The problems people encountered were usually nearby, visible, and connected to people who could actually help or be helped. This was by no means a perfect system, for pre-modern life contained many ills (physical and social). But this is the kind of the life that human bodies were prepared to live.

In the past 200-ish years, however, the technology of the Industrial Revolution and the development of (post) modern culture have placed enormous stress on that kind of life. Obviously, modernity brought with it a great many positive changes. It is easier to obtain food, clothing, medicine, and shelter now than at almost any other point in human history. Infant mortality has declined. Travel is easier. Communication is faster. Many forms of work are safer and less physically destructive. These are real goods, real ways in which human beings have flourished in ways never before seen, and such goods should not be dismissed.

But along with those good changes came new stressors. People became more mobile. Families became more scattered. Communities became less stable. Work became increasingly detached from the production of visible and tangible things. People became more reliant on systems and technologies that few of us understand and none of us can control. Almost no one practices subsistence living anymore, which means that nearly everything we need comes to us through a complicated network of strangers, corporations, machines, and institutions.

And for the past couple hundred years (less time in many places), as people adapted to modernism, human beings did their best to adjust. Many things worked reasonably well. We developed institutions, customs, and social practices that helped people endure the disruptions of modern life. But despite our best efforts, cracks began to form in the human experience. And as more and more research and lived experience attest, what seems to have shattered our humanity was the addition of postmodern media.

It was already difficult for human beings to carry the stresses of modernity. Then we placed in nearly every pocket a device that provides constant access to nearly every crisis, argument, tragedy, advertisement, opinion, and temptation in the world.

We are constantly connected, yet often deeply lonely. We possess unprecedented access to information but are less certain about what is true. We know what is happening across the globe almost instantly, while frequently knowing very little about the lives of the people who live next door. Our minds were not made to carry every tragedy. Our hearts were not made to process the suffering of the entire world before breakfast. Our identities were not made to be continually displayed, evaluated, marketed, and compared. Yet this is increasingly what we ask of ourselves every day.

So what is the cure?

Some might argue for a rejection of modernism. We might call this an Amish response: separate from the technologies and systems that deform human life. Others might argue for some form of the Benedict Option, in which Christians build durable communities and institutions while waiting for the present cultural disorder to pass. And I must admit that there are plenty of times when both of these seem like very appropriate responses to the ills of the current age.

My proposal, however, is a little different, and it goes something like this: the historic practices of the Church of Jesus Christ—specifically communion, baptism, and the penitential cycle—provide the way forward. (Not accidentally, these are essentially the three things Martin Luther—who is often credited, or blamed, for contributing to the rise of modernism—suggested were necessary for the life of the Church.)

Communion requires deep introspection and life in community. You cannot receive communion entirely alone. You need life with other people. You need to gather around a table. You need to confess your sins, reconcile with your neighbors, receive the gifts of God, and remember that you belong to a body larger than yourself.

Communion teaches us that we are not merely individuals consuming religious content. We are members of one another. We share one bread. We receive one Lord. We are brought into communion not only with God, but with the people standing beside us.

Baptism is historically a sign of entering into God’s family. It marks a person as belonging to Christ and to his people. But baptism has also historically been connected to deep formation in Scripture and theology. The early Church did not treat baptism as a passing religious moment. It was surrounded by teaching, preparation, examination, and a reordering of life. We desperately need that kind of depth today.

We must move beyond surface-level interactions shaped by postmodern media. We must dig deep and drink from wells that take longer than fifteen seconds to hear, understand, and digest. We need Scripture slowly read, theology carefully learned, prayers repeatedly prayed, and truths practiced long enough to reshape our instincts.

Then there is the penitential cycle: confession, repentance, forgiveness, and restoration.

The practice of confession is not simply something a priest holds over your head. Properly understood, it is a practice of introspection, conversation, truth-telling, and repentance. We deeply need these things today.

We need places where we can speak honestly about the ways we have failed. We need people who will tell us the truth without discarding us. We need the opportunity to repent, receive forgiveness, make amends, and begin again. Therapy, at its best, often offers a sanitized version of some of these practices: careful listening, honest self-examination, naming destructive patterns, and seeking a healthier way forward. These can be genuine gifts. But the Church’s penitential tradition goes further. It does not merely help us understand ourselves. It places us before God, names sin as sin, announces forgiveness, and calls us into new life.

That is my diagnosis of this strange math problem. Modern society plus postmodern media has produced a sickness that cannot be solved merely by better technology, more information, increased efficiency, or improved self-care. The solution is actually practices which are much older. We lean back into the historic practices of the Church of Jesus Christ. We gather around the table. We remember our baptism. We confess our sins. We receive forgiveness. We read slowly, pray deeply, and share life with actual people in actual places. Will it be enough?

I hold this theory lightly. The problems of modern life are complicated, and the practices of the Church are not easy techniques or quick fixes. They are gifts, and they require patience, faithfulness, and time. Still, I wonder whether the ancient practices of the Church might be precisely the medicine our modern souls have forgotten how to receive. Shall we return?

What Now?: Foreknown, Called, Justified, and Glorified

“‘Dear Lord God, I wish to preach in your honor. I wish to speak about you, glorify you, praise your name. Although I can’t do this well of myself, I pray that you may make it good.’”[i]

Introduction

Last week, Paul moved his readers from the introspection of chapter 7 to the extrospection of chapter 8, Paul exhorted the Roman Christians to understand the symbiotic relationship redeemed humanity has with all of creation yearning for liberation, specifically the liberation that comes with the presence of the glory of God made known in the revelation of the adopted children of God—the ones who are saved by faith in Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit apart from any deeds. Christians, according to Paul, are the ones who understand that they are not the creator; they are the creature and God is the creator. This humble posture of the believer in Christ affirms and confirms that God is trustworthy and truthful (what God says about humanity and God’s self is true!); this is how we are justified because in affirming and confirming God’s trustworthiness and truthfulness, God deems the believer truthful and trustworthy. This then becomes the one who is adopted by God by faith and made one of Christ’s siblings, chosen to represent Christ in the world through truthful and trustworthy words and corresponding deeds. Once again, we were reminded that our salvation isn’t solely from something or someone or someplace, but, more importantly for something and someone and someplace. For Paul and the thrust of Romans, we are saved from ourselves for the wellbeing of our neighbor and creation and to the glory of God.

The last third of chapter 8 reinforces what Paul has been saying. As if he knew we could take what has been said thus far and run with it, thinking it is now up to us to save the world and our neighbor, Paul anchors it all in a subterranean dependence on the divine Spirit of God. From beginning to end, from start to finish, from the highest of heavens to the deepest mantel of the earth, this is all God’s activity—even when we pray and especially when we pray unintelligibly. While this may ruffle our American sensibilities, and specifically Western American sensibilities at that, it is important that we see how much we need God and must throw ourselves on God, on Christ, and on the power of the Holy Spirit working in us. Because, as Paul says at the end of chapter 8, if this is all of God then it is secure…absolutely nothing can undo what God has done in Christ for believers. And while this may sound like a “get-off-the-hook-of-giving-a-heck-about-the-world-and-its-inhabitants” card, it’s not. In being yoked to the One who is on the move, drafted by faith into God’s mission, and called into God’s purpose means that in our liberation from ourselves we, as Christ’s representatives and powered by the Holy Spirit, are free (in very imperfect ways) to help liberate others, to bring love where there is indifference, and to make sure life continues victorious over death.

Romans 8:26-39

Paul begins this portion of his letter by intensifying the believer’s dependence on the Spirit. Paul writes,

Now, in like manner, the Spirit takes hold of our weakness/frailty; for what we must pray for we have not perceived, but this same Spirit intercedes with/in groanings too deep for words. But the one who searches the heart has perceived the prudence of the Spirit because [the Spirit] pleads for the sake of the holy ones according to God (vv26-27).

Not even in our prayers and petitions do we find ourselves operating by our own power. In the words that we utter intelligibly and uttered unintelligibly, the Spirit intercepts and intercedes for us. When we are certain that what we pray for is what we want and even if it feels aligned to God’s will, the Spirit works in our hearts to conform our prayers and our wills to align with God’s own prayers and will.[ii] We may enter the state of prayer one way but we leave another, and that’s because the Spirit is working in us as we pray through the Spirit in the name of Christ to God. In and through prayer, we are changed as the Spirit intercepts us and our words, softening our hearts, informing and forming our minds.[iii] Also, the Spirit intercedes for us to God[iv] when we can only groan in response to the tragedies and terrors of the kingdom of humanity hallmarking the world around us.[v] In times when we cannot pray, the Spirit does so for us, bringing our moans and groans, our gnashed teeth, our collapsed posture into the throne room and pleads for our sake, rendering our inoperable and unintelligible prayers into viable communion with God.[vi] According to Paul, we do not pray alone even when we feel as if we’re the only ones praying. This is why Paul can then say, Now we have perceived that all things work together toward the good for those who love God, the ones who are being called according to purpose (v28).

Paul then moves to speak of God’s foreknowledge about those who have been and are being called—further emphasizing the believer’s dependence on God. Paul writes,

Because God knew beforehand those [who are being called] also foreordained [them] to be conformed to the image of God’s son in order that [Christ] may be the firstborn among many siblings. And those [God] foreordained these ones [God] also called; and those [God] called, these ones [God] justified also; and those [God] justified, these ones [God] glorified also (vv29-30).

Rather than causing hackles to go up, Paul’s point here is to bring comfort to those who believe in Christ, those who have received the Holy Spirit, and those who are trying to do this thing called life while straddling the kingdom of humanity and the reign of God. What matters most here is not who is in and who is out of heaven. Rather, the point is those who are found in Christ by faith are sealed by God[vii]: foreknown, called, justified, and glorified. Believers may be able to boast about a lot of things in the world, but they are forbidden from boasting in their salvation as if it were their own; they didn’t earn it, they didn’t achieve it, they didn’t do it for themselves. Also eliminated is the aspect of chance; for Paul, believers are foreknown, called, justified and glorified intentionally.[viii] Paul here in Romans 8 anchors the very identity and ontology of the Christian in Christ, in the Holy Spirit, in God. All of it, from beginning to end, is because of God’s grand and great love for the whole entire cosmos[ix] (ref. Jn 3:16). And in light of this, it makes sense to hold on to the spiritual fact that not only will all things work together toward the good for those who are being called (even when things look really bad[x]) (v28) but also that If God is for these ones, who is against these ones?? [xi] (v31).

Paul’s declaration and proclamation of the gospel rings through the halls of the church in Rome,

God who did not spare God’s only son, but handed him over in defense of all of us, how will God not give freely all things to us with [Christ]? Who will bring to account against the elect of God? God is the one who justifies. Who is the one who will give judgment against [the elect of God]? Christ, the one who died, and so much more, the one who was raised, who also is at the right hand of God who also intercedes on behalf of us! (vv32-34).

As elsewhere in the Second Testament epistles by Paul, Paul works himself up in a ripe gospel moment resulting in fervent proclamation as he recalls for the Romans the good word of God in Christ! And he brings the conversation full circle, linking the work of the Spirit and Christ together through active intercession on behalf of the ones who pray intelligibly and unintelligibly. Humanity is fully represented in the throne room of God as our prayers mingled with divine intercession and intervention fill up bronze bowls pleading that God’s will is done on earth as it is in heaven.

And if that wasn’t enough, Paul weaves in the divine love of God for the cosmos, humanity, and the elect. This very God, who flung the stars and the great and lesser lights into the sky is for them. This God who did not spare God’s only Son is for them. [xii] This one who is the judge of judges, the king of kings, the priest of priests is for them.[xiii] Thus, these ones can cast their entire selves onto this God not in the sense of giving up but in the sense that behind them stands this one who cannot be defeated by anything and who will not forsake them. God’s love, according to Paul, binds and entwines, grafts and drafts, grows together with and through the beloved of God—those who are called, hear their name, and follow Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. That God loves humanity first is the catalyst for our love of God, the type of love that is born from within seeking the glory of the beloved. Nothing, says Paul in the remaining verses, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING will ever be able to separate you from God and God’s love in Christ made known by the power of the Holy Spirit (vv35-39).

Conclusion

So, why proclaim such good news to us? What do we do with this very good news? What now? Well, we treasure it, let our weary and skeptical minds bath in it, our broken hearts heal in it, and our fatigued and exhausted bodies rest in it. We should let it wash over us, soak us down to the marrow, and let it begin to take root in our souls so that it can begin to form and inform, mold and sculpt our identity and action to conform to God’s reign, as those who are foreknown, called, justified, and glorified by God. We, through our hearing of the proclamation of Christ and our solicited believing in the Christ Jesus, this man who is God, we are created anew to become the representatives of God in a world that has either all too quickly forgotten this magnificent, unconditional, always and forever love of God or has given up hope that anything could ever be different, that there is only indifference, death, and captivity, that all is lost. As the adopted children of God, the “holy ones,” the saints, we are to bring the light of the word of truth to illuminate the darkness of falsehood and expose it, we are to use the keys of the reign of God to liberate anyone who is caught in captivity by the biased policing of the kingdom of humanity, and we are to use our voices and bodies against the authorities, and the principalities of darkness ruling this decrepit world to push back death in the name of life. We are called to live and spread grace, overhauling the power of sin and death one person at a time.[xiv] We are called to love because we were first loved.

Duivelskinderen

Het volgende blogje zal u wellicht voorkomen als overbodig: ik betoog dat Joden geen duivelskinderen zijn. Dat haal je de koekoek, zult u zeggen, en u heeft gelijk, maar het kan desondanks geen kwaad te schrijven over een beruchte passage uit het Evangelie van Johannes. Weliswaar denk ik dat zelfs de grootste antisemiet niet denkt dat Joodse vrouwen werkelijk seksuele omvang hebben met duivels, maar er zijn nog altijd mensen die de antijoodse polemiek in het Nieuwe Testament niet ervaren als problematisch.

Nakomelingen van Abraham

De tekst in kwestie is te vinden in het Evangelie van Johannes. Jezus heeft zichzelf gepresenteerd als het licht van de wereld, heeft zich met een grap afgemaakt van de kritiek en heeft mensen opgeroepen tot hem te komen. “Toen hij deze dingen zei,” noteert de evangelist, “kwamen velen tot geloof in hem.” En dan gebeurt er iets vreemds.

Tegen de Joden die in hem geloofden zei Jezus: “Wanneer u blijft vasthouden aan wat ik zeg, bent u werkelijk mijn leerlingen. U zult de waarheid kennen, en de waarheid zal u bevrijden.”

Ze zeiden: “Wij zijn nakomelingen van Abraham en we zijn nooit iemands slaaf geweest – hoe kunt u dan zeggen dat wij bevrijd zullen worden?”

Jezus antwoordde: “Werkelijk, ik verzeker u, iedereen die zondigt is een slaaf van de zonde. … Ik weet wel dat u nakomelingen van Abraham bent. Toch wilt u mij doden, omdat er in u geen ruimte is voor wat ik zeg.”noot Johannes 8.31-37; NBV21.

Dat is nogal wat, dat je degenen die in je geloven in de schoenen schuift dat ze je willen doden. Jezus’ publiek neemt er aanstoot van; Jezus herhaalt dat ze hem willen doden; zijn toehoorders herhalen dat ze goede Joden zijn, kinderen van Abraham en van God; en dan haalt Jezus uit:

“Als God uw Vader was,” zei Jezus tegen hen, “zou u mij liefhebben, want ik ben bij God vandaan gekomen toen ik hiernaartoe kwam. Ik ben niet namens mezelf gekomen, maar Hij heeft Mij gezonden. Waarom begrijpt u niet wat ik zeg? Omdat u mijn woorden niet kunt aanhoren. Uw vader is de duivel, en u doet maar al te graag wat uw vader wil. Hij is vanaf het begin een moordenaar geweest. Hij hoort niet bij de waarheid, omdat er geen waarheid in hem is. Wanneer hij liegt, spreekt hij zoals hij is: een aartsleugenaar, de vader van de leugen. … U luistert niet, omdat u niet van God bent.”noot Johannes 8.42-47; NBV21.

Dit zegt Jezus dus tegen zijn volgelingen, die dus weliswaar in Jezus geloven maar desondanks duivelskinderen zijn. De beloftes die God aan Abraham deed, hebben nooit voor hen gegolden; de Joden zijn nooit de kinderen van God geweest. (In het hoofdstuk zijn nog twee zinnen waarin expliciet de Joden, zonder beperking of nuancering, worden genoemd.noot Johannes 8.22, 8.48.)

Joodse retoriek

Meestal wordt aangenomen dat de gemeenschap waarin het Johannes-evangelie circuleerde, recent een pijnlijke breuk had ervaren met een andere religieuze gemeenschap.noot Dat staat overigens nergens in het evangelie en de hypothese dat er open wonden waren, is tevens geformuleerd om de hierboven geciteerde passage te verklaren. Dat kunnen de andere gebruikers van deze of gene synagoge zijn geweest of mensen die niet instemden met het idee dat Jezus een goddelijke status had. Als deze aanname correct is, haalt de evangelist uit naar die groep. Er is in elk geval sprake van polemiek, en daarin vallen doorgaans harde woorden. Ik attendeer erop dat intern-joodse discussies in de Oudheid altijd waren geformuleerd in nare taal: “wit gepleisterd graf” en “kind van een adder” zijn maar twee voorbeelden, “leugenzoon” en “Belialsoverleg” twee andere. “Duivelskind” misstaat niet in deze verzameling onwelvoeglijke naamwoorden.

Wie nam dit letterlijk?

Ik heb niet de indruk dat de toehoorders van het Evangelie van Johannes de woorden letterlijk namen. Ze waren vertrouwd met deze vorm van discussiëren en herkenden de hyperbool.

Maar dat veranderde. Eind vierde eeuw waren er, als we de “heidenen” even buiten beschouwing laten, slechts twee opties: je was óf joods óf christelijk. De wegen waren uiteen gegaan. Woorden die ooit hadden behoord bij een interne polemiek werden door christelijke auteurs als Johannes Chrysostomos gelezen als woorden uit een joods-christelijke polemiek, en wat ooit een retorische overdrijving was geweest, werd voortaan gelezen als feitelijke beschrijving.

Een millennium later leed het voor Martin Luther, die ook geloofde in de bloedlegende, geen enkele twijfel dat zijn joodse landgenoten afstamden van de duivel. De implicaties voor het latere antisemitisme veronderstel ik bekend.

What Now?: Children of God

“‘Dear Lord God, I wish to preach in your honor. I wish to speak about you, glorify you, praise your name. Although I can’t do this well of myself, I pray that you may make it good.’”[i]

Introduction

The last time we were in Romans, we were with Paul and his heart-felt confession that within him there is another law at work, the law of sin. Romans 7:15-25, describes that within the person a battle wages between desiring and acting, willing and practicing. Paul spoke of desiring to do the good but the evil, being closer at hand, that is the thing he does; it is easier because it, unlike the good, is in his flesh, it is embedded in his muscle memory, doesn’t demand change and requires less effort. Romans 7 reminds us that being comfortable isn’t the point of the incarnate word of God working in and through us; Christians are called to be afflicted, too, within ourselves and without. We must learn to battle against the other law that works within us, causing us to succumb (repeatedly) to the power of sin that readily lurks about seeking to devour. We are to be alert and aware that there is a misalignment between the inner and outer person; we are exhorted to do what we can to create alignment between inner and outer. Thus, for Paul and Romans 7, our need for Christ and the Divine Spirit, our encounter with God in the event of faith, is not a one and done deal. It’s daily; it’s forever until either Christ comes again or we find ourselves (bodily) in Christ’s presence in the resurrection. The only one who can save us from our wretched state and this body of death is Jesus.

However, Christians are not to be discouraged by this constant inner battle. Luther encourages us to stay the course in his treatise, the Freedom of a Christian, which discusses this tension between the inner and outer person. While it takes time and patience, perseverance and fortitude, we do learn—by following Christ and being influenced by the Spirit through our prayer, worship, and discipleship—that our wills can align with the will of God and this necessarily shapes our activity in the world. By divine love, mercy, forgiveness, and peace we are molded and shaped by God to be Christ’s representatives on earth as it is in heaven. Thus, in Romans 8, Paul beseeches us to live according to the Spirit and not according to the flesh because we’re no longer merely creatures of the flesh and of the kingdom of humanity. We are, by the presence of the divine Spirit and our faith, adopted children of God. And thus, as adopted children of God, we move and act in the world differently because we are inspired by and drafted into God’s reign and mission of the divine revolution of love, life, and liberation.

Romans 8:12-25

Paul, addressing his “siblings” in Rome, tells them, …we, we are debtors/under obligation not to the flesh to live according to the flesh—for if you live according to the flesh you will die. But, if you, by the Spirit, put to death the practices of the body, you will live (vv12-13). This statement follows Paul’s exhortation in the first half of chapter 8 that these siblings by faith are to live according to the divine Spirit—the very person who unites them to God and moves them into their Christlikeness. The Christians in Rome are no longer bound by the law of sin and death but bound to the law of the Spirit and life. Thus, they are, in v.12, not under obligation to the flesh so as to live according to the flesh, but to God and the life God has given them and has in store for them.[ii] To live otherwise is to live oriented toward death and to serve death with the deeds and practices of the body. For the Christian, according to Paul, this is μὴ γένοιτο![iii] For how can those, who have been drafted into and are obligated to the service of God’s mission of the divine revolution of love, life, and liberation, now turn around and serve and become obligated to the flesh and therein the power of sin that lurks within (ref. Rom. 7)? (And if obligated to sin then obligated to die because death is a consequence of sin.) For Paul, the Christian cannot return to the old way of living; the patterns and practices of the kingdom of humanity[iv] are now blocked off.[v] These Roman Christians are new creations or, better yet, children of God, For many of you are brought by the Spirit of God, these ones are the children of God; for you received not a spirit of fear to return again to slavery, but you received a spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Papa Father!’ (vv.14-15).

To be adopted children of God by faith in Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit[vi] means that not only do we bear the love of God for us in Christ, but also that we reflect that love into the world, representing God who chose us, pursued us, loved us, and grounded us in God’s self. And we love those whom and that which God loves.[vii] Thus, adoption status has public and private impact;[viii] Christians, for Paul, are obligated to God thus to one another as if family and friends, loving those whom and that which God loves.[ix] To be the adopted children of God comes with great blessing, we can call God our “Papa Father!” However, in being able to call God our “Papa Father!” we bear responsibility to suffer as our elder sibling, Jesus, suffered and, thusly, identify with the suffering of those with whom Jesus identified in his crucifixion[x] (those physically threatened and murdered by the state and ideologically threated and alienated by the status quo of the kingdom of humanity). As Paul writes, This same spirit bears witness to our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if perhaps we are afflicted in common with Christ so that we also might be glorified together with [Christ] (vv16-17). Christians are the adopted children of God thus those who inherit from God and with Christ both the suffering of God and the divinely gifted glory[xi] the follows.[xii]

This is why Paul then explains, For I reckon that the sufferings of the present time are not deserving of the glory about to be revealed to/for/in us. For the anxious longing of creation awaits eagerly the revealing of the children of God (vv18-19). For Paul, the current and present suffering of those following the will of the reign of God and forsaking the way of the kingdom of humanity pales in comparison to what is to come in the revelation of the children of God. Paul links the desperate cry of the person caught in misalignment of the inner and outer from Romans 7 to the cry of creation suffering under this power of sin waging war in the flesh of humans. Creation does suffer because of human sin and missing the mark.[xiii] (How many more unprecedented hot days do we need to see this is reality?) For Paul and our Holy Scriptures, it was not only Adam and Eve who suffered curses. While we know the serpent did, too, it is more important to see that humanity was pitted against the earth, to fight against the soil, to toil rather than work. For Paul, then, not only do we pray for deliverance, but so does the earth yearn to be released from the slavery of the kingdom of humanity unto the liberation of the dominion of those children of God who participate in the reign of God and God’s mission (vv20-23).

Paul then weaves this discussion through hope, writing, For we are saved to/for hope. Now, hope being seen is not hope, for who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we await eagerly by endurance (vv24-25). Paul is drawing a correlation between the hope that drives the Christians in Rome to await eagerly by endurance and the anxious longing of the creation that is awaiting eagerly for deliverance into the liberty of the glory of the children of God.[xiv] As Creation yearns to be liberated from destruction, the Christian yearns to be liberated from death; both of these liberations come in the consummation of God when the new heavens and the new earth become one. Also hinted at here, is this: even right now[xv] the endurance of the children of God in their current suffering against the kingdom of humanity brings creation a step closer to seeing the children of God because they are exposed through their participation in divine liberation which is the glory of God being revealed in and through and to them.[xvi] In other words, as these Roman Christians participate in the divine revolution of love, life, and liberation the creation begins to receive liberation from the vile ways of the kingdom of humanity, liberated unto and into God’s glory through those who dare to follow Jesus.[xvii] These Romans, by faith, love, and hope, are transferred out of themselves and into God, forever changed in to the one in whom they believe, into the love they have received, and into the hope they have by the Spirit.[xviii]

Conclusion

Paul moves us from introspection of chapter 7 into extrospection of chapter 8. We are exhorted to see a correlation between our own yearning to be free of from the power and law of sin and the yearning of others and all creation. Our bodies and our deeds have impact on the world—this isn’t just about us and our personal relationship with Jesus. For Christians, we are new creations, new creatures called to be something different in the world, and we are neither controlled by the status quo nor in bondage to the indifference, death, and captivity peddled by the kingdom of humanity. In these words, Paul reminds us that we are not our own, that “private” sin is a lie, and that we have a divine obligation to give a heck about what happens to those of us sitting here, to our neighbors outside of these walls, and to respond when creation cries out in labor pains or, worse, in death cries. By the presence of the Spirit we are forbidden from not caring, from turning a blind eye, to letting it all burn. By the Spirit, as adopted children of God by faith in Christ, our ears are open to hear the cries of the many oppressed groups even the silent ones, our eyes are opened to see the fear and terror of those who are forced to run and hide, and our hands and feet are strengthened to respond in deeds aligned with incarnated word of God dwelling in our hearts and minds.

Understanding ISRA’EL: A Call to Faithfulness

JACOB IS ISRA’EL, chosen to be an Unfearful Servant of TheMostHigh.

YHWH made and formed ISRA’EL to be a servant that listens.

ISRA’EL was formed and grew in the womb called earth. This chosen servant called Yeshurun is not to be afraid of growing the earth to YHWH’s callings as it is YHWH who helps in it’s delivery pains.

Isa 44:1  “Now listen, Ya`akov my servant, Isra’el whom I have chosen: 

Isa 44:2  Thus says Adonai, who made you, formed you in the womb, and will help you: Don’t be afraid, Ya`akov my servant, Yeshurun, whom I have chosen.

John 7:14  Not until the festival was half over did Yeshua go up to the Temple courts and begin to teach. 

John 7:15  The Judeans were surprised: “How does this man know so much without having studied?” they asked. 

John 7:16  So Yeshua gave them an answer: “My teaching is not my own, it comes from the One who sent me. 

Yeshua Jesus was not a carpenter. He was a Teacher, a rabbi. He wore a garment that had tassels on it of which was touched and he felt the power of it go into the person touching it in belief. He was not a Sadducee that taught against resurrection. He came to prove resurrection so he joined one of the sects of the Pharisees. Yes, it is proven he was a Pharisee that stirred them up because His teachings were from above.

Isaiah 44:3  For I will pour water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit on your descendants, my blessing on your offspring. 

Isa 44:4  They will spring up among the grass like willows on the riverbanks. 

Isa 44:5  One will say, ‘I belong to Adonai.’ Another will be called by the name of Ya`akov. Yet another will write that he belongs to Adonai. and adopt the surname Isra’el.” 

ALL can come and be part of ISRA’EL. (Struggles along with God to give birth to righteousness using earth as the womb.)

Besides Me There Is No God

Isa 44:6  Thus says Adonai, Isra’el’s King and Redeemer, Adonai-Tzva’ot: “I am the first, and I am the last; besides me there is no God. 

Isa 44:7  Who is like me? Let him speak out! Let him show me clearly what has been happening since I set up the eternal people; let him foretell future signs and events. 

Isa 44:8  Don’t be frightened, don’t be afraid—Didn’t I tell you this long ago? I foretold it, and you are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? There is no other Rock—I know of none.” 

The Son of God speaks at 4000 years from Adam

John 7:18  A person who speaks on his own is trying to win praise for himself; but a person who tries to win praise for the one who sent him is honest, there is nothing false about him. 

Joh 7:19  Didn’t Moshe give you the Torah? Yet not one of you obeys the Torah! Why are you out to kill me?” 

The Son of God is The Living Torah. He can only agree with Mosch/The Torah. (They are out to get rid of The Torah and also The Son of God.)

Joh 17:1  After Yeshua had said these things, he looked up toward heaven and said, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, so that the Son may glorify you— 

Joh 17:2  just as you gave him authority over all mankind, so that he might give eternal life to all those whom you have given him. 

Joh 17:3  And eternal life is this: to know you, the one true God, and him whom you sent, Yeshua the Messiah. 

Joh 17:4  “I glorified you on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 

Joh 17:5  Now, Father, glorify me alongside yourself. Give me the same glory I had with you before the world existed. 

The Servants of YHWH do NOT belong to this world!

The Servants of YHWH Honor The Torah!

John 17:14  “I have given them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world—just as I myself do not belong to the world. 

Joh 17:15  I don’t ask you to take them out of the world, but to protect them from the Evil One. 

Yeshua is leaving the earth’s womb through pain. He asks not for us to be removed, but to be safe while we remain in this birthing canal to Heaven. The Message is a two-fold ministry. The Torah is still valid and remains. It’s purpose is to verify The Atonement Precept via The Son of Man from Heaven.

“Sanctify them through thy truth.” — John_17:17

“Sanctify them through thy truth: ‘thy word is truth’ passages are many.

Joh 17:24  “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am; so that they may see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 

Yeshua Jesus did not want the disciples removed from the earth. They were destined for pain as well. Yet, to build their faith Yeshua asks for them to be there when He is glorified. He will ascend with Hosts of Angels declaring His ascension into the heavy Presence of God called, glory.

A baby from the line of Judah arrives with Hosts declaring His glory. The Son of David is persecuted and chased as was David the son of Jesse. Precept upon precept holds true. The Jew-man leaves in the paradigm of Joseph second in command to his Pharaoh. There was no one on our earth that was not helped when asking Yoseph for help. The Son of Man is the same. We pray with The Spirit guiding us in our requests. No request that lines up with The Torah is refused.

We see Judas repenting of his deeds in his betrayal of the Son of Man in even returning the 20 pieces of silver. Yet, he violated the instructions of ‘Do not murder’. He murdered himself and hung himself from a tree. He even cursed himself more by hanging from a tree.

Why is that a curse? There is only ONE final offering from Heaven and it was designed to be on wood from a tree. Yes, all offering were complete when God himself became a ‘curse’ by hanging on wood from a tree.

Trees represent LIFE.

The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil became a ‘curse’. It was a tree separated out for ‘choice’.

The Tree of Life has moved locations. It symbol of The Tree of Eternal Life is in Heaven. Every month has a special fruit tree. Every month has a special tribe with it’s banner. Man’s spirit is birthed through a canal of heaviness. The weight of God is heavy. The spiritual man knows he is not worthy to even stand next to ”The Light!”

The prayer of Yeshua Jesus to The Most High is that we will see into eternity. Heavens Hosts have given witness to it. Disciples have seen into Heaven. Four Rabbi have died and given witness to TWO figures in power in it. Once they came back and committed their heresy they died a second time.

What is heresy? To say that The Messiach has already come.

Shepherds, First Century Disciples and twentieth century rabbi have been granted permission to witness Heaven open up. The birthing canal from earth can be wide or narrow. It can even give us a tour of the depth of darkness beyond measure and also fiery walls of which souls cling.

Two – and Spirit which is not seen but felt.

A young girl was born to a couple in Arizona after years of trying to get pregnant. When this woman got pregnant this couple was impressed that her name was to be Angela. And so be it, a girl was born; their little angel from God.

Then at three years old she got very sick. Nothing could heal her. She did die. But, she woke up after her death experience to give witness to Heaven. What did she see? Two! Yes, there was Jesus and then the other. What other? The old one. ‘The Ancient One?” “Yes, God!”

The parents knew that they had been given this daughter for this specific purpose. To give witness that there are three because of The Spirit. Yet, two seen ruling.

I listened to this heart-felt story from her father only after I shared about our calf rising from the dead with specific actions spoken from my mouth. I call this being face-to-face with God as was Mosch. This little Angela was a ‘face-to-face’ experience to be shared with only those that could receive it. My Spirit could receive it as a true witness to Heaven.

It was YHWH’s words put into Mosch, nothing of his own doing.

When my conscious started to verbally repenting for putting a fleece before God, the fleece held. If the ‘calf’ was to rise up to specific words put into my mouth, so be it. The words had been spoken and now The Witness to the three other humans standing there would hold true. They would now be accountable to for seeing The Face of God. My praise prayer was in “thanking God for making himself real to my family.” It has and remains my prayer request.

Would it be possible for that calf to rise up from the dead? How long were we suppose to wait in this hot humid weather in the thick stickers? And with it’s head and hoof to rise up? What had this mother and grandmother just requested? And then the calf did it. The Spirit of God was there but invisible. I gave thanks for The Presence of God being there. The air was heavy with humidity and 90 degrees on July 21, 2017. And, now the breeze and wind came of 42 mph at 9:00 pm as Sabbath closed. The temperature dropped to 63 ish degrees. The Flag pole fell and trees at the entrance fell. Yet, two humans drove out without harm.

Seventeen is how long Ya’cov beheld his son before his half brothers sold him into Egypt. Then it is only seventeen years that Ya’cov beholds him as ‘second’ in command in Egypt. It is a total of 34 years that Ya’cov beheld his favored son, Joseph.

The calf rose up in 2017 on Parshah 42 and 43. Next week on July 11, 2026, 26 Tammuz 2026 all around he world those two Parshahs are read the same day. Numbers 30 – 32:42 begins with Mosche speaking to the heads of the tribes and telling this them, “This is what ADONAI has ordered….”

Yes, Parshah 42 even ends with verse 42. “Who decided this? Do these Scribes lean into words that confirm itself? Is god mystical to us? It seems so but not really. It is so we can see conformity and not confusion in Heaven’s alphabet.

I came back from a three day trip to St. Louis and then directly drove to my class. The entire herd of cows did not have water because it had become tainted. All had their tongues hanging out. I quickly gave them access to our pond of which they drank deeply.

The calf was weak but given electrolytes at 3:00 pm that Sabbath. By 9:00 pm it appeared dead and dragged away from a empty creek just in case rain floated it away.

The 60-day old bull calf was renamed from Montana to Mattot Massei. He was not idolized here but accidentally sold to our hay-man and his wife. They did not kill Mattot-Massei but raised him to sell as a bull. We do not know who bought him at the Kingsville Auction. Our King of Heaven knows his story if he lived of died. Yet, the precept upon precept continues because The Spirit is still here.. in the wind on July 3, 2026 and in the number of bales that day. Seventeen big bales on the East Field. Eight big bales on the South Field. Seven on the West Field.

Yes, those numbers are Sabbath (7), New Beginnings Chai/life (8), and Seventeen (17). Aleph (1) and Zayin (7). God’s Weapon is The Sabbath.

I had prayed the hay would not be baled on The Sabbath. I hay-man showed up on Thursday and I thought for sure the hay would stay down a day before being raked. My prayers were heard that it would be ‘good hay’ not violating The Sabbath rest that I alone had applied to this property. When God shows up you can ‘taste him’ and see that He is good. We are to taste God and give witness to His glory when we see it… even in the darkness.

On July 02, 2026 three fields of hay were cut on three sides of our house. The next morning it was raked and that afternoon the baling began. My husband and I stood in awe as to whether this heavy mass of alfalfa, clover and grass could be dry enough to bale. Then to add to it, at 2:35 pm the sky had dark clouds that might have formed storms. No rain came out of it but gusts of wind that scattered some of the wind rows of hay. I stood out in that wind and praised YHWH for His giving us perfect hay. It did not lay for one day or two days or three days. It laid for 24 hours from being cut. It was turned over with ‘The Spirit’ blowing on it. By the start of Sabbath as dark set in the hay was baled.

I know a lot of about the numbers of bales per field but I don’t have a pattern to the number that was baled. Except that it is one-third. And one-third is the pattern given to Noach at The Flood. It is involves the circumference of a circle and much more. Yes, in the year 1332 Noach was Preaching repentance to his world. By 1333 the ark was almost done and the food had been grown. In 1334 The Waters were released and one year later in Daniels year of blessing being 35, Noach’s crew and animals got off the ark.

So where are we in this story line of God’s Hand on our property named El Shaddai for the last eighteen years? We are right where we are suppose to be. Preaching Repentance to every relatives, neighbor, friend or stranger.

We are watching Day Six come to a close and Day Seven from our father Adam open up. Every day is one thousand years long.

At two thousand years Abraham arrives in what some say in year 1948 from Adam. That follows the Precept Upon Precept of Israel being a Nation in 1948. (THAT is HUGE to think about!)

Then the Hebrew letter ‘dahlet’ appears in history. It means ‘open, door’. So, at 4000 years or Day Two our earth has The Son of Man appear. He comes through a human birth canal just as the earth is being used as a birthing canal for seven generations of one thousand years for humans.

The Precepts won’t be broken. They are set in place before the foundation of our birthing canal, earth.

I type this on Independence Day 2026, the Sabbath Pinchas, the Fourth of July. It is blessed by soft rain in Independence Missouri where President Harry S Truman had the Spirit move on him to recognize Isra’el as a state. Then under President Donald J Trump being a “Trumpet’ to the Nations, Isra’el has not called itself ISRAEL. It is not The State of Israel. It is ISRA’EL!

WHY join ISRA’EL? Because all nations are blessed or cursed because of her.

Yes, it is a haughty nation that comes against her. I keep hearing of but Isra’el is so terrible….if you only knew…

Yes, homo sexuality is prevalent but she will be cleansed when we expect her to cleanse. It is the people who aren’t even true Hebrews that infiltrate her. And if dirty money was her beginning, so be it. They carried Egypt’s riches out, too. They never had an income in Egypt but was told to take booty. The gold could not be taken from them when put on The Temple. Yet, in 70 AD when false priests called Herods took over and Rome brought their Greek idols and put them in The Temple, YHWH had already left.

Why do I say this? Because some of my friends blame say that I live in a ‘bubble’ about today’s Israel.

And I say back, why do you to to your Temple and expect God to show up when YHWH said I will put my name where I say, not where you say. It is Jerusalem that The City of Peace will rise up. Yes, she is a harlot now with some violating her but she is to be cleansed and rise up to lead The Nations to be blessed via The Torah.

How can Gentile churches bless the earth when they have canceled The Torah.

I keep saying, ‘What a mess!’ But, God chooses His bride and those that still want to claim Islam or Mormonism or Catholicism with their cathedrals etc are doomed.

We either come back and encourage Torah on all the earth or All of Creation will continue to moan and strike lands all across the earth. The only safe place is ‘In The Will of YHWH’. Not an Allah that promotes death. Not being an atheist who denies God. As I talk to my doctor about this showing him God is real…well, maybe I’m just agnostic. God is for for you but not me.

People expect God to GIVE GIVE GIVE and raise them up when in fact, they have no clue what The Torah is or who God is.

Yes, a fallen generation of people that think The Spirit of God moving is just a ‘superstitious thing’ about me.

Yes, it seems when we don’t see God in our lives, we live in darkness and drag others with us. I’m glad for friends and family who can look at God as active and fear their actions will have consequence for themselves and others.

I want to close on this grand Fourth of July Sabbath. The winds of 17 mph have calmed. My phone still alerts me when it’s 42 or 44. Receipts for our gas barrow filled up on Thursday was $1042.ll. What does that say to you. Today, I set before you, on this Fourth of July an offering to repent as I have. Lie flat on your face. Pinchas had the permission by Mosche, Aharon, El’azar to re move that which was causing The Plague that killed 20,000. He acted and was rewarded with Yeshua coming through his lineage. We must act and not look like this world.

Freedom for America came from others uniting and agreeing to remove those that were about assimilating. Isra’el could not intermarry with The Medianite…of which they were. Intermingling is still our problem.

Freedom for The Nations comes when aligning with ISRA’EL’s Torah. God will be the one that disciplines, not those that know nothing about The Torah / instructions from Heaven. It was first given to Isra’el to disperse so The Gentile could attach to it. Why would the Gentle not honor God’s Sabbath since it is The Sabbath that proves Creation. Ignorance of this is the answer.

We support Isra’el rising up on the earth even understanding many evil rich made Isra’el rich. All riches are hers no matter how it came about. If your riches are attached to evil, Ya’cov buried it and had nothing to do with the gold that had been melted onto pieces of wood then known as Laban’s idols. It covers the years of Noach’s Flood just as we will enter floods on our earth…and earthquakes as seen in the 7.2 and 7.5 collapsing many cities in Venezuela. The United States military bravely went in and captured their ruthless leader and he is in prison in the United States. Those held captive on those ships were also found and released to freedom. Human trafficking still is used in many countries to make profit around our world. Human blood is crying out asking, “When will our blood be avenged.”

Yet, in my own area it has affected their attitude that Israel should not be there.

These Mormons love to agree as they get to keep their temples. Catholics like this as they keep their churches with steeples and a cross. Mormons do not use a the cross on their steeples.

Yes, the people are ignorant and yet Tucker Carlson and Candice Owen and others now turn Catholic. Why?

CHABAD has its Jewish roots out of Ukraine.

Isn’t it interesting that CHABAD began in Ukraine and we are still battling within Ukraine. The ‘not building up Zion’ originated with the CHABAD group first sourced out of Ukraine. Ukraine is fighting for it’s land as Isra’el fights for it’s land. Full circle about whose land is whose? Scripture tells us that YHWH will draw them back. Since 1948 we have seen this. Giving money to Iran will only embolden the bomb flying into Isra’el. Selling fighter planes to Turkey will only enhance bombs dropping on Israel.

They may read it but they don’t studying it. It takes years to understand. You can’t take it out of a Jewish context. Greek thinking has been added to it. Constantine changed the words to fit his new Universal Church. Rome added it’s saints to pray to to gain offering money to support the construction of great cathedrals. England grew powerful by printing a bible. King James chained it to the church pew so people could only read it when in church. Not until people could take it home to study it did change come. Even Martin Luther wrote 91 treaties against The Catholic Church. Did that do any good? No, because when they burnt the Rabbi’s synagogues they also burnt The Torah scrolls.

The New Testament being for us today is the result of centuries of misunderstanding about Jewish traditions. “They killed our Jesus kept leading to more and more people thinking that was true. They never read in Genesis how The Seed would be planted in order to crush Satan’s head. Darwinism took hold with myself growing up I came from a monkey. By God’s grace I found Jesus early in life and committed to Mary to be a virgin on my wedding night.

Again, a miracle of God to think my personal relationship has shifted so drastic that I see God in the ‘wind’ and in ‘the eagle’ and in the ‘calf rising up’. My life is so strong in my faith that anything could happen to me and I would not falter. I pray this for those that want that depth in their relationship with their Creator. Being conceived is the first step. Being planted on this earth to grow is God’s plan for all humans. To rise up in trials is the plan as it is in suffering that we seek God and not ourselves. In pain we see our Messiah who suffered with and for us.

The old woman in the shoe (show) was correct. Tucker and Candice do not know the Bible. They have never studied The Torah. Celebrities are just that… celebrities whose minds listen to Jews abandoned in Ukraine to think for themselves and got very confused to the point that Gentiles don’t need to follow The Torah. Gentiles don’t need to support The Jews to RETURN to make Allyah as told in Scripture. It is hard to live in Israel when it is being bombed. It is hard to live in Ukraine when it is being bombed. Yet, the Jews is to return and when their numbers are high they will no longer be bombed in Israel. Out in the world they will always disperse and feel persecuted.

Trusting what Scripture says is obedience. They MUST return or they will return to dust on the earth. They are to be our teach us correctly and CHABAD is teaching Gentiles don’t need The Torah. I resent this thinking. YHWH had all foreigners and those strange to The Torah to come out of Egypt with the Israelites. God’s instructions began with Adam doing sacrifice with Cain changing the protocol. God used Enoch to write down words to stop the confusion. God used Noach to end the confusion. God used Abram to bring about a special class of people to lead the way. Mosch was used to confirm God was real and wanted to be in humans’ lives.

Yes, they just don’t understand The Torah because they have been told it’s old writing and not for today.

They are deceived and become deceivers. The Pope holds all of Isra’el’s Temple artifacts in their buildings. Does Isra’el need them? No, YHWH will provide what is necessary in The New Temple coming from Heaven. Should others hold them as their own? NO! It is stolen property.

Who is ignorant? Those believing, ‘Surely, you will not die!’

When a CHABAD rabbi lost faith because the man who did not take the little birds before the mother birds eyes died and the one who did take the babies before the mother’s eyes lived misread the scripture. Who will live? We have ‘eternal life’ because we obey The Torah. And, since Day Four with The Seed Yeshua rising up, we also believe that. It was told to Adam and completed at Day Four.

How in the world could that rabbi think anyone lives on this earth forever because of the ‘bird’ issue. No! Even the beatitudes are about eternal life, not life on earth. The poor will inherit Heaven. This is the person who is humble in spirit not a poor person while on earth. Oh how things are taken out of context and even written to confuse us. Let me be taught a Jewish teacher than any Greek thinking theologian.

Shall you die? No, we will not DIE as Adam was not designed to die until he decided to call God a liar. When God was called a liar we know all must decide about The Truth. The Seed was planted to grow up and die for us. Day Three was Nisan 17 since The Seed was planted in the earth on 14 Nisan. Yes, the day all Egypt’s ‘firstborns’ died. The ‘precept’ held true. Adam was promised a Seed from his loins, and it came through his son Seth. It came up through Enoch through Noach and through Abraham and through King David to his son Nathan. (Cancel Solomon as we’ve been told wrong.) Solomon is a picture of wisdom gone wrong. Too many wives brought too many horses that he no longer relied on YHWH but built his own power grid even calling it vanity as when he died someone else would take over. Yes, Solomon even tested abandoning The Torah to see if it was a futile project. He agreed The Torah didn’t make sense either because releasing people from their debt every seven years was not financial wisdom.

Where is our help to come from? First, do not call God a liar. His words called, The Torah remain. Man does what he can of what is available to him. A woman’s instructions can’t be obeyed by a man. A priest’s instructions don’t apply to all Levi’s because they are not all priests. Only Aharon’s family could be priests. Levi had other sons like Korah who had the honor of carrying The Tent of Meeting on their shoulders. Who did they portray? Yes, they were face-to-face with Yeshua Jesus carrying wood to his execution. They looked back to Isaac carrying wood to his potential sacrifice with his father. The Father in Heaven will find those want to see the Precepts and walk them out in their lives. In fact, they are excited to see The Wind as Elijah saw and the earthquake, he felt and yet he heard YHWH in a small voice in his head. YHHW created that wind, fire and earthquake so he was in it. Mariology

This is the Christian theological study of Mary, mother of Jesus. Mariology looks to relate doctrine/dogma about Mary to other doctrines of faith, for example, concerning Jesus & ideas about redemption, intercession, & grace. Christian Marisolgy seeks to place the role of the historical Mary in the context of scripture, tradition, & the teachings of the Church of Mary.

In social history terms, Mariology may be broadly defined as the study of devotion to & thinking about Mary throughout the history of Christianity. There exists a range of Christian and non-Christian views from the veneration of Mary in Roman Catholicism to accusations of idolatry. The idolatry “accusation” includes certain Protestant objections to Marian devotion.

As a field of theology, the most significant developments in Mariology (& the founding of specific centers devoted to its study) in the more recent centuries have taken place within the Catholic Church.

Eastern Orthodox concepts & versions of Mary are integral to the rite as a whole, & are mostly expressed in liturgy. The veneration of Mary is said to permeate, in a way, the entire life of the Church as a dimension of dogma as well as piety, of Christology as well as of Ecclesiology.

While similar to the Roman Catholic view, barring some minor differences, the Orthodox don’t see a need for a separate academic discipline of Mariology. As the Mother of God is seen as the self-evident peak of God’s human creation.

Eastern Orthodoxy calls Mary “The Theotokos,” “God-bearer.” The virginal motherhood of Mary is at the center of Orthodox Mariology. The title Ever Virgin is often used. Virginal motherhood is also known as the perpetual virginity of Mary. The Orthodox approach of Mariology underscores the sublime holiness of Mary, her share in redemption, & her role as a mediator of grace.

Eastern Orthodox mariological thought goes back as far as St. John Damascene (a.k.a. our boy, John of Damascus). In the 8th century, John of Damascus wrote on the meditative role of Mary & on the Dormition of the Mother of God. In the 14th century, Orthodox Mariology began to flourish among Byzantine theologians.

They believed in a cosmic view of Mariology, putting Mary & Jesus together at the center of the cosmos & see them as the goal of world history. More recently, Eastern Orthodox Mariology achieved a renewal among 20th-century theologians in Russia, for whom Mary is the heart of the Church & the center of creation. Eastern Orthodox Mariology doesn’t hold to the belief of the Immaculate Conception of…Mary.

Protestant views on Mary vary significantly from 1 denomination to another. Generally, they focus on various interpretations of Mary in the Bible, the Apostles’ Creed (which professes the Virgin Birth), & the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in 431, which called Mary, the Mother of God.

Most Protestants don’t venerate Mary like Catholics or Eastern Orthodox do. Martin Luther’s, John Calvin’s, & Karl Barth’s views on Mary have contributed to modern Protestant views.

Anglican Marian theology varies. The Anglican Church formally celebrates 6 Marian feasts: Annunciation (Mar. 25), Visitation (May 31), Day of St. Mary (Assumption or Dormition, Aug. 15), Nativity of Mary (Sept. 8), Our Lady of Walsingham (Oct. 15), & Mary’s Conception (Dec. 8).

The Oriental Orthodox Churches regard Mary as the highest of saints & the Theotokos. It celebrates various Marian feast days.

In times when Christians call for war, being a peacemaker can seem like heresy.

For eight days in Lent (6 March 1522), beginning on Invocavit Sunday, 9 March, Luther preached eight sermons, which became known as the “Invocavit Sermons”. In these sermons, he hammered home the primacy of core Christian values such as love, patience, charity, and freedom, and reminded the citizens to trust God’s word rather than violence to bring about necessary change.

St. Anne

According to Christian tradition, St. Anne was the mom of the Virgin Mary, wife of St. Joachim, & was Jesus’ maternal grandma.

Her name isn’t in the Bible’s canonical Gospels. In writing, Anne’s name, & Joachim’s come from New Testament apocrypha. The Gospel of Thomas (written circa 150 AD) seems to be the earliest that mentions them. She’s mentioned in the Quran, but not by name.

The Immaculate Conception was eventually made dogma by the Catholic Church following an increased devotion to Anne in the 12th century. In Eastern Christianity dedications start as early as 6th century.

In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, Anne & Joachim are attributed to the title Ancestor of God. Both the Nativity of Mary & the Presentation of Mary are celebrated as 2 of the 12 Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church.

The Dormition of Anne is also a minor feast in Eastern Christianity. In Lutheranism, it’s believed that Martin Luther chose to enter religious life as an Augustinian friar after invoking St. Anne was jeopardized by lightning.

In the 4th century, & in the 15th century, a belief arose that Mary was conceived of Anne without original sin. The Immaculate Conception is often confused with the Annunciation of the Incarnation (Mary’s virgin birth of Jesus). The 13th century Speculum Maius includes information regarding the life of St. Anne.

In the Eastern church, the veneration of Anne herself may go back as far as circa 550, when Justinian built a church in Constantinople in her honor. The earliest pictorial sign of her veneration in the West in an 8th century fresco in the church of Santa Maria Antique, Rome.

The Feast of the Conception of the Virgin Mary had reached southern Italy by the 9th century. In the Latin Church, St. Anne wasn’t venerated. Except, perhaps, in the south of France, before the 13th century. A shrine at Douai (in northern France) was 1 of the early centers of devotion to St. Anne in the West.

The Anna Selbdritt was a type of iconography showing 3 generations of the “Holy Family,” St. Anne, the Virgin Mary, & Jesus (grandma, mom, son). This style of iconography emphasized the humanity of Jesus. It drew on the earlier conventions of the Seat of Wisdom. (The Seat of Wisdom is/are icons/sculptures that shows the Virgin Mary is seated on a throne with Jesus, as a kid, on her lap.) This was popular in northern Germany in the 1500s.

Two well-known shrines to St. Anne is that of Ste-Anne-d’Auray in Brittany (France) & that of Ste.-Anne-de-Beaupre near the city of Quebec. The number of pilgrims to the Basilica of Ste.-Anne-de-Beaupre is the greatest of St. Anne’s Feast Day (July 26), & the Sunday before the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (September 8). In 1892, Pope Leo XIII sent a relic of St. Anne to the church.

By the middle of the 7th century, a distinct feast day, the Conception of St. Anne (Maternity of Holy Anne) celebrating Mary by St. Anne, was observed at the Monastery of St. Sabas.

It’s now known in the Greek Orthodox Church as the feast of “The Conception by St. Anne of the Most Holy Theotokos.” It’s celebrated on December 9th. In the Catholic Church, the Feast of Saints Anne & Joachim is celebrated on July 26. The alleged relics of St. Anne was brought from the Holy Land to Constantinople in 710 & was kept there in the church of St. Sophia as late as 1333.

During the 12th & 13th centuries, returning crusaders & pilgrims from the East brought St. Anne’s relics to some churches, including most famously those at Apt, in Provence, Ghent, & Chartres. St. Anne’s relics have been preserved & venerated in the many cathedrals & monasteries dedicated to her name.

For example, in Austria, Canada, Germany, Italy, & Greece in the semi-autonomous Mount Athos, & the city of Katerini. Duren has been the main place of pilgrimage for Anne since 1506, when Pope Julius II decreed that her relics should be kept there, after they were stolen from the church of St. Stephen in Mainz.

The Church of St. Anne in Beit Guvrin National Park was built by the Byzantines & the crusaders in the 12th century. This is known in Arabic as Khirbet Sandahanna, the mound of Maresha being called Tell Sandahanna.

St. Anne is the patroness of unmarried women, housewives, women in labor or who want to be pregnant, grandmothers, moms, & educators. She’s also a patroness of horseback riders, cabinet-makers, & miners.

As the mom of Mary, this devotion to St. Anne as the patron of miners arises from the medieval comparison between Mary & Jesus & the precious metals: gold & silver. Anne’s womb was considered the source from which these precious metals were mined.

St. Anne is the patron saint of Brittany (France); Cuenca (Ecuador); Chinandega (Nicaragua); the Mi’kmaq people of Canada; Castelbuono (Sicily); Quebec (Canada); Santa Ana (California); Norwich (Connecticut); Detroit (Michigan); Adjunta (Puerto Rico); Santa Ana & Jucuaran (El Salvador); Berlin (New Hampshire); Santa Ana Pueblo, Seama, & Taos (New Mexico); Chiclana de la Frontera, Marsaskala, Tuadela, Atarfe & Fasnia (Spain); Town of Sta Ana Province of Pampanga, Molo, Iloilo City, Balasan; Iloilo, Hagnoy, Santa Ana, Taguig City, St. Anne Shrine, Malicboy, Pagbilao, Quezon, & Malinao, Albay (Philippines); Santana (Brazil); St. Anne (Illinois); Sainte Anne Island; Baie Sainte Anne & Praslin Island (Seychelles); Bukit Mertajam & Port Klang (Malaysia); Kl’ucove (Slovakia) & South Vietnam.

The parish church of Vatican City is Sant’ Anna dei Palafrenieri. There’s a shrine dedicated to St. Anne in the Woods in Bristol, United Kingdom.

Anne is also revered in Islam, recognized as a highly spiritual woman & as the mom of Mary. She’s not named in the Quran. She’s called “the wife of Imran.” The Quran describes her remaining childless until old age. One day, Anne saw a bird feeding its young while sitting in the shade of a tree, which awakened her desire to have kids of her own.

She prayed for a kid & eventually conceived. Imran, her husband, died before the kid was born. Anne expected the unborn kid to be a boy, so she vowed to dedicate “him” to isolation & service in the Second Temple.

Anne had a daughter (Mary) instead. Anne named her: Mary. Anne’s words upon delivering Mary reflect as a great mystic, realizing that while she’d had wanted a son, this daughter was God’s gift to her.
