  1. The Lovely War

Donald Trump threatens Iran the way he once threatened a recalcitrant steak: same wounded, flinty, infant-king fury. A working homage to Martin Amis -- on the Epstein flights, the six-billion-dollar goon squad, the taunting of a proud civilisation, and a nine-year-old girl in Minab waiting for the water that is her birthright. The infant-king has other plans.

True enough. It eventually becomes clear that Mister Amis most ardently admired and loved Miss Austen. But perhaps he hated himself a bit for it.

And his description in those last three lines of the drooping arc of her personal hopes and life are so brutal you want to look away.

  6. Jesus, Martin Amis was a brutal bastard.

"No reader can resist the brazen wishfulness of 'Pride and Prejudice,' but it is clear from internal evidence alone that Austen never fully forgave herself for it. 'Mansfield Park' was her—and our—penance. As her own prospects weakened, dreams of romance paled into the modest hope for respectability. 'Persuasion' was her poem to the second chance. And then came death."

Martin Amis on the Genius of Jane Austen (and What the Adaptations Get Wrong)

Superb critical essay from 1996, demonstrating a deep love and understanding of Jane Austen. He elegantly eviscerates Four Weddings and a Funeral - "the upper crust is playing cute" - and happily spends much more time on the brilliant BBC television series (1995). That was the only adaptation of Pride and Prejudice worth watching, the gold standard.

  8. #MartinAmis: In ''White Noise'' the famous ''airborne toxic event'' was the result of a military-industrial accident. But it was also DeLillo's metaphor for television -- for the virulent ubiquity of the media spore.

  9. Not to speak ill of the dead, but Martin Amis once wrote this about the terrorist attacks on the WTC on September 11th and, well … it's nonsense.

I mean really, clearly, obviously impossible, absolutely not possible if you think about the events of that day, or the sizes of the objects described, for even ten seconds.

Like I say, I'm not trying to speak ill of the dead but it has always puzzled me that he could write something so ridiculous and not get called on it.

  10. RIP Martin Amis.
I've never forgotten reading Money when I was at university for the 1980s Lit module I took. The first time I felt simultaneously repulsed and gripped by a novel. I found Joh Self truly disgusting and irredeemable, but I just couldn't put it down. Reading it was a truly visceral experience.

There are very few books that have had that kind of impact on me!

I've got a few more of his novels I've picked up for charity shops over the years, maybe time to read.

  12. I just realised with a jolt how many #books by #MartinAmis I’ve read over the years, all because of those explosive scabrous early novels full of wordplay - a UK (maybe wannabe) Roth or Updike He’ll be missed. It spurred me to start reading Money again today for 1st time since 1986. Vivid, funny, clever, as a 20th century boy I loved it, but its misogynistic/misanthropic 1st person narration is jarring to 21st century sensibilities.
