Anime World Order's recent review got me watching the first 2 eps of Nadesico tonight. It's too early in the show for the uneven drama he talked about but already I can see why it reminded Gerald of Captain Tylor. When this show is funny, it's very funny.
It's been on my shame shelves for a while; I must've picked it up in a RightStuf sale years ago. Apparently it's out of print right now, which is a much bigger shame, but it's watchable on RetroCrush.

It isn't all harem, but that's one of the silliest parts. He doesn't really want anything to do with any of the women. And overdone emotional scenes abound.
And there's an idol contest, probably because of Macross.
