Quick stop for food in Errachidia at a cafe that was slowly filling up with people preparing for the #Morocco / #Mali football match. It's part of the #African Cup of Nations, which we landed right in the middle of. Sadly it was a 1-1 tie.

Later on we took a flight back to rainy #Marrakesh where we're snacking, recharging and doing a little shopping at the local Artisanal market. Got belts and jewelery. And the ceremonial #Morocco floor pillow. Because you gotta.

I have a serious craving for a crispy pork roast and ris a la mande - our traditional rice pudding with almonds and cherry sauce.

For now, we're in the desert and later today we'll be having what I hear is the traditional weekly #couscous #barbecue at a local #berber family-run restaurant.

After that we're heading back to #Marrakesh for a couple of days and then home.

Morocco is a beautiful country, but the people can be a bit exhausting. The Berbers in the mountains are wonderful, but in the cities it’s different - you constantly have to count your change because they give you less or “forget” to give it back 😅. There are lots of scammers, and when taking a taxi you have to agree on the price beforehand or ask them to turn on the meter - they won’t do it on their own. It really wears me out. I’ll come back here one day, but only for the nature.

I have to admit though, my hosts at the riad were really great. The first thing they told me when I arrived was what to watch out for 😄 They kept warning me about phone thieves on scooters and advised me not to take out my phone too often.

It’s my first solo country in Africa, and I have to say - the first experience wasn’t the best 😅 But Africa isn’t a country, it’s a continent, and I’m sure there’s still a lot of good waiting for me here ❤️

De Almoraviden

Een tijdje geleden blogde ik enkele keren over de geschiedenis van het Iberische Schiereiland in de tweede helft van het eerste millennium. Ik noemde de post-Romeinse staat van de Visigoten, het Rijk van Toledo, en ik vertelde over de Arabische verovering in 711. Daarna behandelde ik het ontstaan van het Emiraat van Córdoba, zijn bloeiperiode als kalifaat, de positie van de christenen in het Emiraat, en ten slotte was er een intermezzo over Asturië. Het verhaal eindigde rond het jaar 1000, toen een crisis in El-Andalus leidde tot het uiteenvallen van het Kalifaat in een stuk of dertig deelrijkjes, de zogeheten Eerste Taifas. Vandaag herneem ik dat verhaal.

Culturele bloei

Eerst dit: een eenheidsstaat die uiteenviel in deelrijken, wordt in de Europese historiografische traditie vaak getypeerd als een periode van neergang. Het klassieke voorbeeld is de geschiedenis van Egypte, met rijken en tussentijden. Deze (vaak impliciete) beoordeling zegt meer over de tijd waarin de Europese historiografische traditie is ontstaan: de negentiende eeuw, toen men overal streefde naar een sterke eenheidsstaat. In werkelijkheid was er vaak geen noemenswaardige afname van de welvaart en ging het culturele leven gewoon verder. Dat geldt ook voor Iberië.

Bij wijze van voorbeeld noem ik Abu Amr al-Dani (981-1053). Geboren in Córdoba, opgeleid in Kairouan en Caïro, pelgrim naar Mekka en daar geschoold als Koran-geleerde. Toen hij in 1009 terugkeerde, was El-Andalus verdeeld aan het raken, en hij verbleef in allerlei noordelijke taifas. Dat weerhield hem er niet van wetenschappelijke publicaties te doen over de teksttraditie van de Koran. Uitleg van de reciteerwijzen ligt buiten het bestek van deze blogreeks, maar we hebben hier te maken met eersteklas wetenschappelijk onderzoek, vol erkende onzekerheden en goed onderbouwde redenaties. De man moet altijd de beschikking hebben gehad over een fabelachtige bibliotheek, taifa-oorlogen of niet.

Toledo

Die taifa’s, deelrijkjes, maakten nooit één front tegen de noordelijke, christelijke staatjes: het graafschap Barcelona en de koninkrijkjes Aragón, Navarra, Castilië en Léon. Portugal was aanvankelijk niet meer dan een strook land tussen Léon en de taifa Badajoz. Die christelijke staatjes waren al even verdeeld als de taifa’s. In het Iberische Schiereiland werd in de eerste drie eeuwen na de Arabische verovering bepaald geen clash of civilizations uitgevochten. In 1085 veranderde de situatie echter drastisch. Koning Alfonso VI van Léon en Castilië (r.1072-1109) was bezig de taifa Toledo te brandschatten, toen een factie in die stad de poorten voor hem opende.

Het veroveren van de Castilische Hoogvlakte was nooit Alfonso’s opzet geweest, maar nu hij de kans kreeg, greep hij haar aan om zijn grens te verleggen tot aan de Taag en het nieuwe land te geven aan eenieder die er een boerderij wilde beginnen. De kolonisten kregen hun landerijen tegen zeer gunstige voorwaarden, die waren vastgelegd in fueros (privilege-contracten), waarin geen sprake meer was van horigheid. Militair stelde de inname van Toledo weinig voor – het was een kleine nederzetting met een te wijde muur – maar de inname van de aloude Visigotische hoofdstad vormde een propagandistische coup van jewelste. Dit schreeuwde om een reactie.

De Almoraviden

Het verbaasde dus niemand dat na de val van Toledo de resterende taifas op zoek gingen naar hulp. In de Maghreb was juist een machtig koninkrijk ontstaan, dat het al genoemde Emiraat van de Idrisiden in Marokko had afgelost en zich inmiddels had uitgebreid vanaf de Atlantische kust tot Algiers en Timbuktu. De hoofdstad was Marrakesh. De leiders worden aangeduid als Almoraviden, Al-Murabitun. Dat betekent zoiets als “ribat-bewoners”, waarbij een ribat de verblijfplaats is van een soort religieuze ridderorde, die in dit geval een gnostische interpretatie gaf van de islam. Toen de hulpvraag kwam uit El-Andalus, stond emir Yusuf ibn-Tashfin aan het hoofd van de Almoraviden.

In 1086 stak hij ter bescherming van zijn Arabische geloofsgenoten over naar Andalusië, waar hij Alfonso VI versloeg. In de volgende jaren leerde hij echter dat de onderlinge weerzin van de emirs in de taifas zó groot was dat ze zich nooit eensgezind zouden verdedigen tegen het agressieve Castilië. Tegen wil en dank bleef Yusuf ibn-Tashfin in Spanje, waar hij de taifas één voor één aan zich onderdanig maakte. (De oorlog rond Valencia zou worden vereeuwigd in het gedicht over El Cid.)

Toen hij in 1106 overleed, had hij alleen de taifa Zaragoza nog niet in handen, maar dat gebeurde vier jaar later. Voor het eerst sinds een eeuw waren de gebieden die ooit hadden behoord tot het Kalifaat van Córdoba, weer verenigd in één rijk. Niet voor lang echter: in 1118 overmeesterde Aragón Zaragoza. In de komende jaren verloren de Almoraviden overal terrein.

De Kruistochtgedachte

Voor El-Andalus betekende de Almoravidische heerschappij de invoering van een strenger religieus recht dan men was gewend. Maar er was meer aan de hand. In deze jaren ontstond bij de bewoners van Iberië voor het eerst het bewustzijn dat ze niet een stuk of veertig staatjes op een gedeeld schiereiland waren, maar dat ze moslims en christenen waren. Yusuf ibn-Tashfin kwam op voor geloofsgenoten; vanaf nu lezen we steeds vaker dat de christelijke koningen gezamenlijk opereren.

Wat meespeelde was dat aan de andere kant van de Middellandse Zee de Eerste Kruistocht met succes Jeruzalem had ingenomen. De verhouding tussen de twee wereldreligies werd in deze jaren op scherp gezet en hoewel er er ook daarna nog lange perioden van co-existentie zijn geweest, ontstaat in de twee decennia na 1085 een Iberische kruisvaardersideologie: de Reconquista. Wie onlangs in de krant las dat rechtse Spaanse politici islamitische feestdagen willen verbieden, herkent de erfenis.

De Almoraviden

Een tijdje geleden blogde ik enkele keren over de geschiedenis van het Iberische Schiereiland in de tweede helft van het eerste millennium. Ik noemde de post-Romeinse staat van de Visigoten, het Rijk van Toledo, en ik vertelde over de Arabische verovering in 711. Daarna behandelde ik het ontstaan van het Emiraat van Córdoba, zijn bloeiperiode als kalifaat, de positie van de christenen in het Emiraat, en ten slotte was er een intermezzo over Asturië. Het verhaal eindigde rond het jaar 1000, toen een crisis in El-Andalus leidde tot het uiteenvallen van het Kalifaat in een stuk of dertig deelrijkjes, de zogeheten Eerste Taifas. Vandaag herneem ik dat verhaal.

Culturele bloei

Eerst dit: een eenheidsstaat die uiteenviel in deelrijken, wordt in de Europese historiografische traditie vaak getypeerd als een periode van neergang. Het klassieke voorbeeld is de geschiedenis van Egypte, met rijken en tussentijden. Deze (vaak impliciete) beoordeling zegt meer over de tijd waarin de Europese historiografische traditie is ontstaan: de negentiende eeuw, toen men overal streefde naar een sterke eenheidsstaat. In werkelijkheid was er vaak geen noemenswaardige afname van de welvaart en ging het culturele leven gewoon verder. Dat geldt ook voor Iberië.

Bij wijze van voorbeeld noem ik Abu Amr al-Dani (981-1053). Geboren in Córdoba, opgeleid in Kairouan en Caïro, pelgrim naar Mekka en daar geschoold als Koran-geleerde. Toen hij in 1009 terugkeerde, was El-Andalus verdeeld aan het raken, en hij verbleef in allerlei noordelijke taifas. Dat weerhield hem er niet van wetenschappelijke publicaties te doen over de teksttraditie van de Koran. Uitleg van de reciteerwijzen ligt buiten het bestek van deze blogreeks, maar we hebben hier te maken met eersteklas wetenschappelijk onderzoek, vol erkende onzekerheden en goed onderbouwde redenaties. De man moet altijd de beschikking hebben gehad over een fabelachtige bibliotheek, taifa-oorlogen of niet.

Toledo

Die taifa’s, deelrijkjes, maakten nooit één front tegen de noordelijke, christelijke staatjes: het graafschap Barcelona en de koninkrijkjes Aragón, Navarra, Castilië en Léon. Portugal was aanvankelijk niet meer dan een strook land tussen Léon en de taifa Badajoz. Die christelijke staatjes waren al even verdeeld als de taifa’s. In het Iberische Schiereiland werd in de eerste drie eeuwen na de Arabische verovering bepaald geen clash of civilizations uitgevochten. In 1085 veranderde de situatie echter drastisch. Koning Alfonso VI van Léon en Castilië (r.1072-1109) was bezig de taifa Toledo te brandschatten, toen een factie in die stad de poorten voor hem opende.

Het veroveren van de Castilische Hoogvlakte was nooit Alfonso’s opzet geweest, maar nu hij de kans kreeg, greep hij haar aan om zijn grens te verleggen tot aan de Taag en het nieuwe land te geven aan eenieder die er een boerderij wilde beginnen. De kolonisten kregen hun landerijen tegen zeer gunstige voorwaarden, die waren vastgelegd in fueros (privilege-contracten), waarin geen sprake meer was van horigheid. Militair stelde de inname van Toledo weinig voor – het was een kleine nederzetting met een te wijde muur – maar de inname van de aloude Visigotische hoofdstad vormde een propagandistische coup van jewelste. Dit schreeuwde om een reactie.

De Almoraviden

Het verbaasde dus niemand dat na de val van Toledo de resterende taifas op zoek gingen naar hulp.
