[Ron] Ough okay this is hard to explain. I have been thinking about it for a while. It is sort of… comfy? Like, when you live in the world and everything feels upside down already, and everyone is always making weird decisions for reasons beyond your comprehension, these spaces become kind of comforting. If that makes sense. They exist in the in-between. If I found the poolrooms, I would feel like I found a secret playroom just for me.

I feel that the backrooms (and weirdcore media in general) has become about the scary screatures. And it's just. Do what you want, but that's not what we find interesting about it. These places are not scary, they are weird. Anything that lives there should be similar.

I really like Kitty's House. Kitty is not malicious, just kind of weird. But nice. https://backrooms-wiki.wikidot.com/level-974

And then there is weird comfort that comes from being nonhuman and seeing these places. They just seem nice. Spacious. Lots of room. I would swim and play in the poolrooms forever and ever.

And of course, there is that horror element. I enjoy this weird little micro-genre(?) as horror as well as comfort media. The horror elements mostly play on nostalgia, things that you know, how things should be, how they have always been. Rather than screaming jumpscares or things out to GET you. You see things that aren't the way they should be. It's creepy, dreadful, but not scary.

I feel that the Backrooms movie did not hit this feeling for us, and was trying to hard to be scary. But I know it was directed by Kane Parsons, who is my age, and has been making Backrooms videos in Blender since he was 16. I am just glad that YouTube creators like that are able to make movies that get into theaters now! That is so crazy. I can't be too upset about the movie because of that.

  2. I think watching the Backrooms movie was very healthy for us, even though we didn't enjoy it very much.

Watching what it (in my opinion) did wrong with liminal spaces and weirdcore reminded us what we LOVE so much about these concepts.
