the novel #TomsCrossing is set in 1982, but flash-forwards show that later on (in-universe), many unrelated people make art, fan-art, folk art etc. in reaction to stuff that happens in the book.

if you know the fediverse AND read the lengthy descriptions of these artworks, discussions, exhibition spaces etc., you will think: "same vibe!"

After 8.5 weeks, I've finished Mark Danielewski's newest, the 1200+-page tome that is Tom's Crossing. I languished, I complained, I doubted. And then, I cheered, I applauded, I was sad for it to be over. It's books like these that make me unable to quit a book I've started, especially a book I've invested a lot of time into. No regrets.

I finally started to read Mark Z. Danielewski’s monumental novel Tom’s Crossing last night, and I already know I’m committed for the long haul. I’ve had the book on my shelves for a couple of months now but put off starting it until I had the (head)space to give it the attention it deserves.

I’m a fan of Danielewski’s work anyway, but this seems like something that reaches beyond even the best of his earlier writing. So many passages where I’m marvelling at the way he expresses both the mundane and the ineffable with such clarity and apparent ease.

There’s no comparable feeling, I think, to becoming truly lost in a grand work of the imagination.

Gerade eine Passage von »Tom’s Crossing« (2025) absolviert (S. 784-794 von 1229), die mich abermals schweißgebadet, mit Gänsehaut und dem Gefühl, einen waghalsigen Sprung geschafft zu haben entläßt. Und das wiederum nur, weil #MarkZDanielewski es versteht, das Abenteuer ›Mensch versus Natur‹ anhand von drei Teens, vier Pferden, einem Esel gegen die gleichgültige Erhabenheit von Bergmassiv, Gravitation, Wetter und Bergziegen zu beschreiben.

Kurz: Dieser Roman ist der komplette Wahnsinn.

Verglichen mit seinem bisherigen Schaffen hält sich #MarkZDanielewski bei »Tom’s Crossing« (2025) ja sehr zurück mit auffälligen Typographie-Spielchen. Aber wenn er sie hie und da einbringt, dann verursachen die bei mir Gänsehaut de luxe.
Hier das loses Geröll bei einer weiteren heiklen Hangquerung mit Pferden.

»Tom’s Crossing« (2025) von #MarkZDanielewski unterhält mich weiterhin glorios: verblüfft, erfreut, berührt mich auf jeder Seite, und ist immer wieder spannend wie Thriller und unheimlich/wundersam wie beste Phantastik.
30-Seiten Kapitel (»The Aster Scree«). Drei junge Leuz mit vier Pferden (Navidad, Mouse, Jojo und Ash) erklimmen auf ihren Tieren eine eigentlich unmögliche Geröllhalde (Talus). War danach schweißgebadet, obwohl es nur um Mensch vs. Terrain geht.

> Bin inzwischen auf S. 149 (von 1229) von »Tom’s Crossing« (2025), dem dicken Neo-Western-Gespenster-Abenteuer von #MarkZDanielewski. Hab zwischendurch Spaß dabei, mir die Gegend in Utha anzugucken, die als Vorbilder (Provo, Orem, Wasatch Range, Mount Timpanogos) dienten für die fiktiven Roman-Schauplätze (Ovrop, Rome, Isatch Canyon, Mount Timpanogos). Ist nahe bei Salt Lake City und Sundance und dem Aspen-Skiressort.
Ach ja: voll der dolle Natur- und Pferde-Roman 🐴 !

EDIT-ERGÄNZ: Bescheid geb für alle, die bammel haben, von wegen »der schreibt doch experimentelles Zeuch, wo was mensch ned kapieren können tut«. Diesmal eben nicht. Formenspielerei bei »Tom’s Crossing« ist minimal, dafür gibts Neo-Western-Lokalgeschichte (mit Geistern) im besten Parlando-Flow. Keine Typo-Experimente, einfach nur flutschige Prosa.

#MarkZDanielewski schreibt wirklich in einer komplett anderen, eigenen Liga. Bin von ihm seit »House of Leaves« schwer hingerissen, wurschtle mich immer noch durch »Only Reveolutions« und gehöre womöglich zu einer Handvoll Leuz in Deutschland, die alle 5 Bände von »The Familiar« verschlungen haben.
Allein die 23 Seiten erste Szene seines neuen Westerns »Tom’s Crossing« sind gigantisch dolle Prosa. Drei Teens begegnen sich an Koppel und machen kleinen Rodeo-Bewerb mit zwei alten Problempferden.

I tend to read ebooks these days but today I bought a real book: House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. It’s been recommended to me a lot recently. I’ll be interested to find out whether the weird formatting and somewhat experimental nature is a gimmick or actually adds to the story.
