Back to playing MarioKart 8 in the evenings. My husband is Bowser and he’s a pro at power sliding. He manages to get around me (Bowser Jr) in the tunnel before the train comes through. Nothing like a spirited race or two (or more) to forget about daily worries for a bit.

- Bluetooth latency is better but still too high to play without wired headphones.
- It’s possible to remap buttons and save a profile for it. It’s not tighted to 1 game in particular, so you have to apply / unapply the saved profile before/after playing a game. Not perfect, but I can live with it. I’ve swapped Y and A in #MarioKartWorld because I used Y to accelerate in #MarioKart8.

From Super Mario Kart to Mario Kart 8, the series drifted away from kart racing and into magical nonsense. It’s not that Nintendo can’t reconcile fun and challenge... it’s that they don’t want to.

PART 1: INNOVATION OVER CONTROLIf Mario Kart 8 was developed by Namco and Mario Kart Super Circuit by Intelligent Systems, then of course those games are very different from the rest of the series, and in a way, that’s what helped refresh the concept. I don’t see driving on walls or underwater as an improvement. I prefer a "real game" where obstacles say "stop", rather than one that becomes increasingly permissive, where the player is never really interrupted in their progression. Miyamoto is an inventor, everything he touches is original. Whether it’s F-Zero, Mario Kart, or even Wave Race, none of those games have believable gameplay. They shine thanks to their innovation and whimsy, but never because of gameplay. Because as much of a legend as Miyamoto is, he doesn’t even come close to Yu Suzuki in that specific domain.
In F-Zero, you have to press down to land. But the D-pad also steers the vehicle. That’s intentional, Miyamoto wanted landings to come with the risk of not landing straight and flying off the edge.
It’s clever, it’s fun, but when you want to clock a proper time in time trial mode, it becomes impossible to drive precisely. In Mario Kart, they removed the landing mechanic, because it’s no longer spaceships, but instead added speed boosts before jumps. So you end up being launched into the air at full speed, and again, you never know where or how you’re going to land, and you might fall off. Just like in F-Zero, it’s innovative and fun, but even though time trials can feel "sim-like", all these flights and landings destroy driving precision.

CW: mario kart 8 deluxe in yuzu: split-screen multiplayer but with one full monitor per player
so a while ago the custom resolution setting in yuzu gave me an idea: mario kart multiplayer splits the screen into 4 tiny 30-fps quarters which is annoying, but now with the power of emulation i might be able to double the resolution to uhd and then virtually arrange my fhd monitors in a way that each monitor aligns exactly with one of the quarters, so each player could have their view on their own separate fhd monitor in full resolution. and possibly in 60 fps too. and now i’ve put that idea into practice.
the one-screen-per-person-thing worked perfectly and it was amazing. of course the course selection spans the entire game window, so that would be split between the monitors too, but i pressed f11 to temporarily switch to single-monitor full-screen in-between races for map selection. and i did find a 60 fps mod that technically worked, but my yuzu only reached 45-50 fps (with both native fhd and with uhd), and since fps is linked to game speed it caused the game to run in slow motion. so we had to live with 30 fps, but everyone having their own full-size monitor to look at was already an amazing improvement. it was pretty cool!
oh, and apparently there is an emulation bug with multiplayer – to prevent the game from getting stuck in the character selection menu, any controller other than the one of player 1 must press the button(s) to get from the title screen to the main menu. but otherwise it works flawlessly. except that the minimap that’s usually in the middle of the screen is now split between the monitors, so i disabled it entirely.
and i made a script using kscreendoctor to easily switch to this virtual monitor arrangement from my regular arrangement that reflects the physical monitor positions, and to get yuzu to be the perfect size i forced it to be that way with kde plasma’s alt+f3 special application settings (the window size has to be uhd + yuzu’s top and bottom menu bar heights). but forcing the right position didn’t work (it does work for other things). so it’s not that much work to replicate this, i only have to change yuzu’s emulated resolution, run the monitor position script and carefully move the yuzu window to the pixel-perfect position.

Been playing a ton of Kart 8, Pokémon Unite, and Skullgirls since my kid has been over these last 2 weeks. We also tried a little Trash Punk (which is a FUN, fantastic twin stick shooter/roguelite but is TOO DIFFICULT). And of course we played a bunch of Rekt, which is also a blast.
