Planet of the Vampires (1965)
Jeg kan ikke lyve; lige så elitære krav jeg stiller til dyrt producerede, nutidige film, lige så velvillig er jeg overfor alt B-ral som er blevet spyttet ud gennem det tyvende århundrede. Efterhånden ser man kimene til ting som blev større succeser senere hen, eller finder simpelthen egne favoritter blandt de ofte budgetramte filmskabere.
Planet of the vampires har jeg snoozet på længe, til trods for at den er blevet til i samarbejde mellem den italienske horrorinstruktør Mario Bava og danske Ib Melchior (Angry red planet, Reptilicus og Journey to the seventh planet). Og efter jeg har set den, skuffer filmen ikke på alle parametre.
Rumskibet Argos er på redningsmission for at hjælpe søsterskibet Galliott, hvis mandskab er nødstedte på en øde og gold planet. Allerede efter nedstigningen begynder Argos’ besætning at opføre sig ukarakteristisk, men de går i gang med eftersøgningen med krum hals. Først finder de Galliotts stab døde, siden stiger samme lig op af deres grave. Og hvad er det for sære lys, som fløjter gennem planetens atmosfære?
Jeg vil stoppe her og sige, at der ikke nødvendigvis er noget i vejen med historien, men dens afvikling er utroligt træg, og figurernes handlinger strider nogle gange mod al fornuft. Hvorfor bemande en åben luftsluse til rumskibet med vagter på en fjendtlig planet, når man bare kan hæve hele landgangsmodulet? Fordi plot, så klart — nogle menige besætningsmedlemmer skal sættes i fare for at øge indsatsen. Men det spiller lidt falsk og gumpetungt.
Hvor selve historien laver en serie af maveplaskere, er billedsiden ret tæt på fantastisk; Bavas øje for spektakulære, visuelle effekter fornægter sig ikke. Scenografien er et udstyrsstykke, særligt diverse rumskibsinteriører er næsten som futuristiske paladser. Også rumskibenes ydre er lækkert designede, omend modellerne kunne have trængt til et sidste touch. Det virker ret tydeligt at Star Trek-produktionen har skelet i denne retning, da Enterprise skulle designes.
Udendørsscenerne må være et mix af kulisser, modeller, bagprojektion og matte painting, snedigt forklædt af malérisk lyssætning og tågeeffekter. Det giver samlet en dramatisk diorama-illusion af langstrakte vidder og dybder. Og gennem hele filmen er så bevidste farvekompositioner at hjertet sig forbarme. Det er psykotronisk filmkunst på højere plan end budgettet burde antyde!
Jeg må også fremhæve kostumerne, som er flere skridt forud for samtidige (og endda senere), lignende produktioner. Genren tro har alle i mandskabet samme uniformer, men modsat f eks Star Treks lidt undervældende sparkedragter er Argos’ og Galliotts mandskab klædt i sort læder med gule sømme og detaljer. Så snart de tonede frem på skærmen udbrød jeg, “De har jo X-men-dragter fyrre år før X-men!”
Og det var jo der, jeg startede anmeldelsen. Det virker for mig helt åbenlyst, at Planet of the vampires har sat sine spor i større og mere signifikante TV- og filmproduktioner. Star Trek, jo — sammen med Forbidden planet (1956) og diverse mere jordbundne opdagelsesrejse-historier, selvfølgelig — men også Alien (1979).
Dan O’Bannon har flere gange indrømmet, at han plankede (og givetvis forbedrede!) scenen, hvor Nostromos rejseholdet udforsker det fremmede rumskib, fra Planet of the vampires. Lige fra rumskibets landing på en tåget planet, til fundet af det enorme skelet af en tidligere skibbruden, udgør den 14 år ældre film skabelon for beats i Alien (Se også sammenligningen Alien and Planet of the Vampires) Og ja, der er et parasitisk element også i Planet of the vampires, som ikke skal afsløres her.
Jeg kan levende forestille mig, at folk i ’70erne har sat Bavas film på uden lyd, knaldet helt op for Grateful Dead og røget en koger — og jeg tror faktisk det er den bedste måde at opleve Planet of the vampires. I min mere ædru bedømmelse anno 2024 er den stadig en vanvittig (og) fascinerende billedfortælling med toner af instruktørens andre, mere horror-betonede film, tidlige fantasmagorier som Benjamin Christensens Häxan (1922), og endda som sagt langt senere film og TV-serier.

Four Times That Night is a Mario Bava movie. It's Rashomon done as a sex comedy. Made in 1968 but not released until 1971 by which time it seemed very tame. It's not much admired even by Bava fans but I enjoyed it. Great 60s Bava visuals.
