  1. Marine weather information is abundant. The difficult part is understanding what it means for this vessel, in this place, at this time, before the safe decision window closes.

I wrote about why I built Selkie Tech Vector Weather, the limits I place on AI, and why safety technology must account for paddlers, commercial crews, liveaboards and people whose access to shelter is constrained.

  2. 🌊Since 2013, the Central Alberta Rescue Diving Society has braved Alberta’s lakes and rivers to bring closure to grieving families. 💙 As the province’s only volunteer dive recovery team outside major cities, their 663,000 sq km mission is awe-inspiring. 3. I'll post some belated stuff today; my last full day off before returning to work tomorrow.
One of my search & rescue friends took me away for an off grid day hiking adventure yesterday & we got home last night.

#Carmanah Point #LightStation was established in 1891. The first #lighthouse there was built of wood & attached to the keeper's housing. The present tower was built in 1920 of concrete & remains in operation. The area is said to be named for the upstream #Nitinaht village. It is said the name means "thus far upstream".

In Summer 2024, #Canadian Fisheries & Oceans along with the #CoastGuard announced that the light station was seismically unstable & would be destaffed before the end of the year. On Oct. 25, lightkeepers were removed from the station. The decision to destaff the station has been met with heavy criticism from various local authorities, including local governments, indigenous leadership & industry leaders.

  4. The coast guard’s decision to pull keepers from two light stations along the #WestCoastTrail caught local #FirstNations, municipalities, boaters and hikers by surprise — especially because an earlier Senate report that recommended halting previous #destaffing plans stressed consultation should take place before any changes are made.

“We should really be making sure this is the right decision and I’m not so certain that’s the case,” said Chief Sayaač̓atḥ (John Jack) of Huu-ay-aht First Nation near Tofino, one of three nations with trail guardians who have worked with #lighthouse keepers on “multiple occasions” to help those in distress.

The #Canadian #CoastGuard, part of Fisheries and #Oceans #Canada, recently decided to pull #lightkeepers from #CarmanahPoint and #PachenaPoint light stations — four in all — before winter weather sets in.

While aids to navigation will remain, it said a geotechnical report and hazard assessment found land underneath many of the buildings was not stable and some facilities are not safe to use.

Critics, however, say destaffing the #LightStations will put at risk the safety of #mariners, small planes and the approximately 8,000 hikers using the West Coast Trail every year.
