Sometimes aiming for perfection can be the right thing to do. An example is getting a good image in a camera or a microscope. There are multiple settings: focus, aperture, lighting, and exposure. They all need to be simultaneously at the right setting. When you get it perfect the result is dramatically better than when one of the settings are a little off.

From the outside this can look similar to perfectionism, but it's different. When the delay is caused by worry about what other's will think, it's more likely to be perfectionism. With aiming for perfection it is about an internal drive for quality.

I thought of it because I am re-reading Marie Kondo's book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. She recommends tidying up perfectly, in another words going through every single one of your items when you are decluttering instead of just doing a bit here and there. In my experience, it is a good approach.

The #downsizing adventure continues... #MarieKondo says keep what sparks joy.

For me, that includes old wooden floors, a few good memories, and a pair of boots made for walking.

Everything else? Thank it kindly and let it go (but that is really tough with a lifetime of memories: concert tshirts, stupid #souvenirs, #inherited treasures that really are not treasures, etc).

I found a draft of a post I wrote in 2020 about tidying with the Konmari method (as described by Marie Kondo). It goes through my experience and what I learned from going through my things. I went ahead and posted it on my blog!

My partner and I were recently making some joke about Marie Kondo-ing something and our friend didn't know what it was, so I tried to explain it to him real quick.

Then he asked: "Is that why your character always thanks for the tool's service in Animal Crossing?"

After 5-10 years we came across my boxes of CDs and DVDs. I haven't touched them in that time. I have all my music CDs on my NAS and almost everything is also available through various streaming services, I don't like the thought of being dependent on those having available what I am interested in. But I don't even have a full fledged CD/DVD player anymore, only a portable USB device. And yet I wonder if I should keep the CDs and DVDs...

"Does it give me joy to have these things?" ... Not sure.
"If there was some poop sticking to it, would I wash it or trash it?" ... Not sure.

Opinions?

Do you have a document which, a year or more from now, will prove crucial to your life and whose loss would severely ruin your equanimity?

Simply put the document in a book, and put the book in a shelf, and then stride away whistling a jaunty tune, to live your best life.

When you come to need the document you'll spend 24+ hours visiting every molecule in your house, and uncover things you thought you'd lost, and which you'd forgotten spark so much joy.

One of my focuses lately has been decluttering. I think the best idea I've had for this has been to keep the decluttering habit itself small and inconsequential. Marie Kondo, author of "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up", suggests decluttering one room at a time. I've taken that a step further -- our home is relatively decluttered, we've just the problem areas, so I'm taking it one space at a time. One problem-area at a time.

Do you declutter? Or perhaps you consider yourself a minimalist? What is your favorite advice or decluttering tip to offer others?
