Unbeknownst to my sheltered self, apparently she's got an artistic streak and has been a big Tolkien fan. Back in the 1970s, she corresponded with him under the pen name "Ingahild Grathmer" and ended up illustrating a Danish edition of the Lord of the Rings.

The soon-to-be former #QueenOfDenmark #MargretheII (using capital letters in #Hashtags is preferred though it does look like I am shoehorning in the word hell) has an Icelandic name, Þórhildur. We call her Margrét Þórhildur.

She was born just after the occupation of #Denmark when her grandad was King of Iceland in name only. Then #Iceland declared independence in 1944.

So she has been saddled with a name (and spelling) honoring a country that dumped her family when she was four.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has announced she will abdicate on the 14th of January.
She is currently the world's only queen regnant, so unless someone else abdicates in the next couple of weeks (unlikely) - or, God forbid, dies unexpectedly - the world's thrones will all be occupied by men.
