"The Annihilation of Fish," a romantic comedy starring the late James Earl Jones and Lynn Redgrave, was shot in 1999 but never distributed, thanks to a negative review from @Variety, followed by the bankruptcy of the producer. Now, a newly restored version has been released in select U.S. theaters. Variety's J. Kim Murphy (not the original reviewer) spoke to director Charles Burnett about how he feels about the movie's tortuous path to the big screen, working with Redgrave, Jones and Margot Kidder, and what he's learned about making films.

Wow, #LoisLane sure screams a lot in #Superman. It really feels out of character.

I don’t think this is #MargotKidder’s fault, I just think the script could have conveyed her sense of wonder and amazement more convincingly. Maybe that’s how a real person would behave, but it just doesn’t work here. Probably they should have written things to avoid putting her in scream situations as much.

Watching the first #ChristopherReeve #Superman film. A few of my opinions of it haven’t changed since I first saw it when it came out (I was 9):

- The music is great.
- Christopher Reeve is great.
- The effects are okay.
- #LexLuthor, his crew, and his plan are all dumb, although they are funny.
- #MargotKidder is not a very good #LoisLane and is saved by the script. (No I don’t know who would have been a better choice, inasmuch as #KatharineHepburn was a little too old for the role.)

I remember being pretty disappointed that #JimmyOlsen wasn’t a redhead, but I don’t care about that now.

I have a few new opinions, though:

- The film is very white.
- #GeneHackman and #NedBeatty are criminally underused (which I didn’t know on release because I had no idea what great actors they are).
- #MarlonBrando seems to be sleepwalking through his part.
- The Superman theme is my favorite #JohnWilliams composition.
