  1. 2012 Legends – The Edmund Fitzgerald

In 2012, Legends Drum and Bugle Corps form Kalamazoo, Michigan, performed a show about the Edmund Fitzgerald. While Lightfoot's hit was one of the musical selections and was the main motif throughout, Legends expanded on the music and the story with other selection.

  2. 1985 Suncoast Sound – Florida Suite

As I sit on the deck of the beach house I’m spending my summer vacation at, watching the ocean as the rain gently falls, I find myself thinking about drum corps shows which evoke that summer vacation feeling. One such show is the 1985 Suncoast Sound production of Robert W. Smith’s Florida Suite, a groundbreaking show in a number of ways and a joy to watch and listen to.

Florida Suite is an entirely original composition written by Smith for Suncoast, and, as result, 1985 was the first […]

  6. Kinetic Noise Should Have Won

I rarely argue with the results at Finals.

But I will go to my grave, Abe Simpson shaking his fist at the clouds style, that the 2015 Bluecoats SHOULD HAVE FUCKING WON.

  7. I’ve taken so many pictures of drum corps and the marching arts, but I’ve never attempted editing any of those photos. When I found that Affinity Photo 2, a strong alternative to Adobe’s software (no subscription, for starters!) has a 180 day fully functional trial, I decided now was the time to start learning about photo editing.

My first attempt was with this photo I took of the Madison Scouts during the 2024 Drum Corps International World Championships Finals. Here is the original unedited photo:

And here is the edited version, with a simple crop to just the snare line, but also a removal of the two mic stands:

I would like to figure out how to alter lighting and color levels next, but not bad for a first try!

  8. It’s been fun seeing more and more YouTube channels reacting to drum corps videos since the pandemic started. This is especially true for non-United States channels. The most famous is the first, New Zealand Girl, AKA Courtney Coulston. Now we have Charlie Smith from Great Britain discovering our activity and absolutely loving it.

In this video, Charlie reacts to the 2023 Phantom Regiment’s performance of Exogenesis. Charlie gets emotional early in the performance, and it is clear that he has become a fan of the activity after just three videos (Charlie previously reacted to the 2023 Bluecoats and the 2023 Blue Devils). He’s talking about coming to America to experience drum corps live. I hope he gets the chance.

Here is Exogenesis without commentary for your enjoyment.

  9. Open Class corps have done well throughout the decades of Drum Corps International, including when they were known as Class A/A-60 or Division II/III. It’s common for Open Class corps to make the Top 25, which now includes DCI World Class Semifinalist status. One of those corps last season was the Columbians

In their first trip to DCI World Championships, the Columbians not only finished fourth in Open Class, they doubled Washington state’s representation in the Top 25 for the first time ever. Talk about facing everything and rising. What was especially impressive for me was that the Columbians field TWENTY powerful mellophones!

The Columbians are coming back to Indianapolis this season. Can they medal in Open Class? Can they return to World Class Semifinals, if not improve on their placement? Will I get to see them live at least once this season? Actually, I need to check the schedule on that last one, but I hope so!

  10. I almost missed this, but the Blue Stars recently posted a video of their 2023 program, In-ABSINTHE-ia, from the DCI World Championships Semifinals. This is a high cam video the corps took from the top deck of Lucas Oil Stadium.

“In 2015, I went to WGI World Class Percussion Finals for the first time. One of the greatest show moments I’ve witnessed in my marching arts life occurred that night when two of the bass drummers got engaged during the show. That’s correct, the guy dropped to one knee and pulled out a ring, which the girl happily accepted, during the final minutes of the show.”

  14. Marching Monday – 2010 Bluecoats

  15. It is the Santa Clara Vanguard, however, who I wish to remember in this article. With the recent announcement that SCV was going inactive for 2023, most fans’ attention is on the drum corps part of the organization, but it was not that long ago that the Vanguard featured a world class winterguard which won multiple championships before shutting down after 2016.

  17. Earlier today, talk of starlings came up on my feed. This reminded me of the 2022 Avon High School Indoor Winds ensemble and their incredible production of "Murmuration", which is what a flock of starlings is called.

This performance gets me in the feels every time I watch it. It is amazing that a high school group can sound and look this good while performing with the emotion Avon did.
