Day 22 #artAdventCalendar my bee (and other pollinator) propaganda I made for Manufactured Ecosystems. Thinking about the future of pollination and seeking solutions from technological and nature-based knowledge. This is essentially my conclusion: we can aid our beleaguered pollinators with technology but their continued success is vital. 🧵

Day 11 #artAdventCalendar The loggerhead shrike, endemic to North America, is also known as the butcherbird for its carnivorous tendencies and habit of ostentatiously displaying stored prey dramatically impaled on convenient spikes like tree thorns or barbed wire. Its usual prey are insects, amphibians, lizards, small birds or small mammals. 🧵

Day 10 #artAdventCalendar A piece for Manufactured Ecosystems about the future of pollination about who decides what gets pollinated if humans and our devices are the only pollinators.
The definition of “weed” is usually pretty arbitrary and usually all sorts of native plants get caught up in our human biases. Milkweed is insanely popular with the pollinators in my garden and 🧵

Day 5 of #artAdventCalendar - For the Manufactured Ecosystems art show about the future of pollination I looked at what nature-inspired technologies exist or are already proposed or that I could envision to pollinate plants, faced with a precipitous drop in pollinator numbers. But, I am also turned an artist’s eye to larger implications.
There are already researchers working on artificial pollination with tiny 🧵

We’ve made it to December so that means it’s time for #ArtAdventCalendar! I enjoy taking part and just sharing art every day and take the opportunity to go back over new work I made during the year.
Day 1. I am sharing the pollinator garden work which I made for my show about the future of pollination for Manufactured Ecosystems. 🧵

Day 28 #SciArtSeptember prompt harvest. Echoing my print of insects for Manufactured Ecosystems about the future of pollination this print is intended to drive home how much we are dependent on insect pollinators. These are many of the food crops we grow here in Ontario which benefit from insects. I didn’t include crops grown for oil or as livestock feed. (Some are representative of a category, 🧵

Day 2 #SciArtSeptember prompt is canopy. For my #ManufacturedEcosystems art show this summer about the future of pollination, I made 2 prints about the tree canopy in the city. I used the prints to bookend my envisioned range of possible future for wild pollinators in this environment, from the utopian to dystopian. In the more utopian version neighbourhoods are replete with pollinator gardens instead of lawns and solar panels for their homes - but also, importantly a very full tree canopy.🧵1/n

A little #scicomm in the garden: you might remember I repurposed one of the prints I was working on for #ManufacturedEcosystems for a local pollinator garden. It’s now up, with its hand-printed collection of native bees and message in amongst the pollinators (native and introduced) in the garden.

I’m giving a talk tomorrow about my work about the Future of Pollination tomorrow for #ManufacturedEcosystems
You can join live or watch later if you want to hear about how I approached this and the artwork I made for the exhibit!

For #PollinatorWeek I am sharing the pollinator garden work which I made for my show *next week* about the future of pollination for Manufactured Ecosystems. Using collaged linocut prints I built up this little garden with multiple native wildflowers, bees, moths, butterflies, beetles and a log, complete with some holes as homes for native bees. 🧵1/2

Thinking about possible futures for pollinators for #ManufacturedEcosystems I’ve imagined a future where habitat restoration and pollinator gardens are embraced, placed everywhere they can be in an urban environment including residential front and backyards and on green roofs combined with a move to climate friendly energy sources like these rooftop solar panels. This multimedia with linocut map shows many trees, 🧵

Other insectivorous species may be in trouble as pollinator populations fall. We cannot simply replace bees and other pollinators with robots.

Pollinator Week is a great time to share this print, which expresses the central theme of my work about the Future of Pollination for Manufactured Ecosystems. Our food sources & ecosystems around us are dependent on pollinators (mostly bees & other insects, some birds & mammals) but insects populations have lost huge numbers and many species altogether.🧵

More pro-pollinator propaganda for #ManufacturedEcosystems: in a future where we rely on pollination drones in the absence of natural pollinators can we be relied upon to pollinate wildflowers? Plants we deem weeds?
The loss in pollinator species & just sheer numbers is frankly staggering but we can make choices to better protect pollinators now to ensure a future where they persist & fill their niche.🧵

Yes, it’s a spider. Sorry, arachnophobes.
This is a yellow garden spider, also known as a writing spider in its web. For #ManufacturedEcosystems this is another imagined animal interaction with a robobee or other pollination drone. Spiders have some PR issues so I don’t know if I can make people empathize with spiders whose food sources are being depleted by the decline in insect pollinators. 🧵1/n
