  1. A twist on the #ManOrBear theme: It seems a female bear* might also feel safer meeting a human than meeting a male bear.

*) A female brown bear with a cub, that is. Like the one hanging out in our neighborhood. Because male brown bears have been known to kill others’ cubs on the off chance that the bereaved mum will fancy a shag.

  2. Okay, since this came up let me reiterate what the point of the #ManOrBear debate was.

When a lot of women said that they preferred the bear, men should _not_ interpret this as an "attack" on them personally, or men in general.

Instead, it simply reflects the fact that women have to evaluate their personal safety in entirely different ways than men. Random male strangers are, statistically speaking, far more dangerous to women than random female strangers are to men. Yes, most men are perfectly safe, but there are enough exceptions that women cannot pretend that they are not out there.

In other words, women have different life experiences than men when it comes to personal safety. (Well, duh!)

And the _sensible_ thing for us men would be to accept that having life experiences that differ from our own does not make them invalid.

Instead of, you know, treating statements about these experiences as "sexism against men" or a personal attack ("I am owed the benefit of the doubt, and how dare they suggest otherwise!").

If you get upset about this, then you should direct your ire against the men who cause these safety issues in the first place, instead of the women who have to deal with them.

    No. Of course not!

A Woman Who Left Society to Live With Bears Weighs in on “Man or Bear” bikepacking.com/plog/man-or-be

“My task is ridiculously complex. I need to deescalate any signs of aggression, guide the man into a state of emotional balance, and exit the situation safely, all at once. […]

I’ve been in this position so many times that it exhausts me just to write about it. Sometimes, it’s not that I’m afraid of men; I’m just really, really tired.”

  12. The new "response" to "bear or man?" is so stupid, I can't even figure out what these guys are thinking, or what "point" they think they're making. (And why a tree?! 🤣)

Like, are they really trying to equate sharing their feelings with getting mauled by a bear? Or with what women are justifiably afraid men might do to them in the woods?

"Would you rather open up to a woman or a tree?" says way more about the men themselves than women, trees, or anything else. #ManVsBear #ManOrBear #BearOrMan

  17. "In patriarchal societies where #masculinity is coded as #power and control, men often try to get closer to women through power and control. The range of how this plays out is vast. It could be inconsequential, or it could end a woman’s life. This (...) may also be a reason why so many women in the “Man or Bear” debate chose the bear."

I recommend every man to read this piece by long-distance #cyclist Laura Killingbeck.

  18. The "Man or Bear?" debate has dominated internet discourse for the past week or two (TL;DR In a viral TikTok video, a man asks eight women if they’d rather be stuck in a forest with a man or a bear. Seven say they'd prefer the bear). Here's a unique perspective from Laura Killingbeck, a contributor to Bikepacking magazine, who actually did leave mankind behind to live in nature with bears. "'Would you rather be stuck in a forest with a man or a bear?' is just another way of asking, 'Are you afraid of men?' she writes. "It’s the same question I’ve been fielding for the entirety of my life as a solo female traveler. It’s the same question that hovers over women all the time as we move through the world."

  19. CW: Long thread about brutal crimes

By now, you're probably heard of #ManOrBear arguments on social networks: is it worse for a lonely woman in the woods to meet a man or bear? This, of course, was just a prelude to a broader discussion about how safe do women feel among men.

As luck would have it, I was just reading a book from almost three decades ago that answers that question. 1/?

Imagine yourself, a man, walking through the woods. You come upon a bear.

But the bear's supposed to be there. The bear's supposed to be in the woods. If you quietly turn and walk away, chances are the bear is going to mind its business.

Now, imagine a different scenario - you, a man, is walking through the woods. There's no one around and your phone is dead..
Out of the corner of your eye you spot him: Shia LaBeouf

He's following you, about 30 feet back. He gets down on all fours and breaks into a sprint
He's gaining on you: Shia LaBeouf

You're looking for your car but you're all turned around. He's almost upon you now
and you can see there's blood on his face. My God, there's blood everywhere!

Running for your life (from Shia LaBeouf)
    He's brandishing a knife (it's Shia LaBeouf)
    Lurking in the shadows
    Hollywood superstar Shia LaBeouf
Living in the woods (Shia LaBeouf)
    Killing for sport (Shia LaBeouf)
    Eating all the bodies
    Actual cannibal Shia LaBeouf

Now it's dark and you seem to have lost him, but you're hopelessly lost yourself
Stranded with a murderer, you creep silently through the underbrush

Aha! In the distance. A small cottage with a light on. Hope! You move stealthily toward it
But your leg! Ah! It's caught in a bear trap!

Gnawing off your leg (Quiet, quiet)
Limping to the cottage (Quiet, quiet)
    Now you're on the doorstep
    Sitting inside: Shia LaBeouf

    Sharpening an axe (Shia LaBeouf)
But he doesn't hear you enter (Shia LaBeouf)
    You're sneaking up behind him
    Strangling superstar Shia LaBeouf

Fighting for your life with Shia LaBeouf
Wrestling a knife from Shia LaBeouf
    Stab it in his kidney
Safe at last from Shia LaBeouf

You limp into the dark woods, blood oozing from your stump leg. You’ve beaten Shia LaBeouf

Wait! He isn’t dead! (Shia surprise)
There’s a gun to your head (and death in his eyes)
But you can do jiu jitsu
    Bodyslam superstar Shia LaBeouf

    Legendary fight with Shia LaBeouf
Normal Tuesday night for Shia LaBeouf
You try to swing an axe at Shia LaBeouf
But blood is draining fast from your stump leg

He’s dodging every swipe (He parries to the left)
You counter to the right (you catch him in the neck)
You’re chopping off his his head now
You have just decapitated Shia LaBeouf!

His head topples to the floor, expressionless.
You fall to your knees and catch your breath.
You’re finally safe from Shia LaBeouf.

  22. I keep seeing men talking about the #ManOrBear question, and saying things like "well, even if just a small percentage of women feel this way that's a problem", and expecting to be lauded as being understanding and supportive.

They're completely missing the point - it's not that women FEEL that bears are less of a threat. It's that bears ARE LITERALLY LESS OF A THREAT.

Lisek and Miller found that 1:16 men self reported rape behaviours. McWhorter found it was 1:7.

This isn't even looking at other forms of violence.

It's not that we FEEL there's a problem.

    THERE IS AN ACTUAL PROBLEM.

  23. Glad #BearVsMan conversation is happening. I wish it went beyond talking about individuals to discussing systems.

Bears don't have a culture around them that actively encourages treating women as their property.

"Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee."
