Springtime at Norway House was a beautiful time, when the ice melted and the streams opened and flowed through the snow to the water of the Lake. YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNAL, 1849:
"Messrs. John Rowand, John Edward Harriott, Christie and Simpson started at 2 o'clock this morning for York Factory. Messrs John Lee Lewes and George Deschambeault left at 8 am immediately after breakfast, and Mr. Sinclair, Mr. James Lockhart, and myself embarked in a light canoe at 11 am.
"Thursday. We overtook and passed Mr. Lewes & Co. about sunset. We camped at the Dam.

"Arrived at Robinson Portage about 11 am. Before night all the boats together with part of the cargoes were taken over to the other end. Warm weather.
"Saturday. About 10 am we left Robinson's, having taken breakfast before starting. Were about three hours on a rock, drying, washing, and resting. Camped a few miles from the Height of Land.

"Rained all day. Started between 3 and 4 am. Reached the Barriers, by which track we proceeded at 8 pm.
