#MangaMonday 35 “Manhole” by Tetsuya Tsutsui

A naked man emerges from a manhole in urban Japan. After staggering around he vomits blood on a university student who pushes him away. He doesn’t realize that the man dies when he hits the pavement nor, worse, that he’s now infected.

#Manhole is not for the faint of heart. There’s some nudity (including full frontal male) and gore of the common (e.g., car accident victim,) unusual (evidence of elder abuse,) and possibly unique (eyeball autopsy) varieties. Nagasaki Prefecture actually banned this #manga as “harmful,” (which in turn inspired Tsutsui’s “Poison City.”)

Tsutsui’s art is exceptional. Here his lines here have a pencil-like quality, which comes through even in the digital version. The story is disturbingly plausible, although the exact vector is Tsutsui’s creation.

Originally published twenty years ago—everyone sports flip phones—the first official English volume (of three) was just released (Kana.)
