Mango season is coming. Here's my short S Asian mango primer, and some ideas on where to buy them (I'm only focused on the ones you can buy outside S Asia, so if you're like 'the type that drops in my grandma's garden in the Konkan coast is the best', great, keep some for me)

The entire cab of my truck is filled with the delightful aroma of ripe mangoes. #MangoSeason

Second mangoes of the season: Banganapalli. These are my fave mango.
They’re larger than kesar, kind of stubby, not fibrous, very smooth. They don’t travel well.
Which is maybe why all my attempts at eating them outside of south India and Singapore (where we have same / next day air service for mango during mango season!).. have been disappointing. Still, I eat them to remember my wonderful times in south India. I miss Mustafa Centre, and buying ripe mangoes at 3am

First mangoes of the season (that I can get, 8000 miles away):
- a box of Kesar mangos
- Kesar means saffron in Gujarati; where these mangoes are from
- named for the bright orange flesh and pulp
- quite small, very sweet and pulpy
- from New India Bazaar, Polk St, San FranciscoIf you haven’t read my mango newsletter, here’s the link: https://buttondown.email/skinnylatte/archive/mango-madness/ (has info on what to buy and where)
