For those that have been following my #SBC shenanigans for awhile, here is the current status:
1) #Pine64 RockPi Pro is still running strong as a file server
2) Both #MangoPi (quad and pro) have been recycled
3) #RPi zero has been set up to be a CLI sandbox to play around with
4) #OrangePi Zero2w & #MilkV mars both have #Debian installed but are currently collecting dust. I need to find something to do with them.
Unless something really neat comes out WITH robust support, I think my little foray into SBC will come to end; or more likely be way more sporadic. -
After dusting off the #sbc this weekend and tinkering with them, I have some sad news. Both of my #MangoPi (pro and quad) are being put out to the pasture. The MP pro (D1 Allwinner risc) wont post regardless the supported OS I put on it. The quad is no longer supported and I cannot find an image to flash on it; scubbing the internet has not been fortuitous.
As for the rest the jury is out. The #OrangePi Zero 2W and RV are working fine; they are just not exciting anymore. The #MilkVMars seems too limited and lacks support from the maker but is up and running. The #RPi Z2W is chugging along just fine.
Unless I find something exciting and well supported, I think I’m kind of done with SBCs at this time. -
Took all of 5 minutes to “clean up” my #SBC set-up. I have downsized the SBC that I currently use. Now I am down to the following:
1) @PINE64 Rockpro64 which is my mini #Debian file server (black box with stickers)
2) #MangoPi Pro a D1 #riscv sbc for tinkering (small black box)
3) #RPipico emulating a 128K Macintosh (grey box)
4) #OrangePiRV2 (clear box) an 8core K1 riscv sbc also for tinkering.
All my other sbc are collecting dust in a box until I find a use or they end up in the e-recycling bin. -
1/13/26 Update 1: the #Debian Bullseye server iso I used had a bunch of odd problems compared to the previous #XFCE Debian iso I have used on the #MangoPi Quad.
Did a reinstall of the XFCE iso, updated the repos to Bookworm, and installed a few #flatpaks. I thought to do #Snaps but those got #borked on a prior installation on the Mango Pi.
Shortwave and Dillo run great. Firefox is slow but functional. Using @ActionRetro Frog Find made both browsers way more enjoyable. -
Welp, that was a thing. It took 45 minutes to get #LXLE live running, then another 30 to do a full install just to crash and not work.
My expectations were low, but this fell even lower than that.
I then attempted to install LXLE on the bare metal. After boot I just kept getting a black screen.
I booted up #Q4OS with #TrinityDE. It’s fine; it’s just not as exciting as getting Trinity running on my #mangopi #sbc
-
Update 3:
I ran #BleachBit on the #XFCE DE and was able to get the idle ram use on the #MangoPi Quad to 32%!
BleachBit took awhile to run; I will get to finishing up the #Openbox set-up tomorrow.
Preliminary results on Openbox is mid to upper 30s for ram use. This was before running Bleachbit and with using the #Cairodock.

I was not able to get a plug and play solution like #Batocera, #Lakka, or #Retropie to boot on the #MangoPi MQ-Quad
So for the time being, I was able to install janky official #Debain iso and upgrade it to #Bookwork with the official repos.
I will probably have to install all the emulators individually. Holler at your boy if you know some good emulators for the following:
1) #GameBoy/GBC/GBA
2) #NeoGeo Pocket
3) #Wonderswan
4) #AtariLynx
5) #GameGear
6) #NES
7) #MasterSystem -
So far the #RockPro64 and the #MangoPi MqPro have been a blast to tinker around with and to set up in their final forms/use case.
The #OrangePi Zero 2w has been a fine addition and has a promising future.
Both RPi zeros have steady and running well for their respective use cases (pi-hole and mini nas).
The #MilkVMars has kind of been a disappointment since day one and not much has improved since then. Maybe it needs more time, but I just get more meh as it goes on.

#MangoPi update:
I installed and customized #Tmux. Installed #GPM. Now I can easily move between panes with a mouse or with a keyboard.
#Lynx has been a fun way to surf the web. I can confirm that @geerlingguy & @thelinuxcast sites look good on Lynx
Running #Btop and #Cmatrix give it that “hacker” feel. Now I just need to find a #RSS reader.

Outside of not having Newsboat (for the time being), I think I have my #MangoPi set up how I want it.
I think it looks pretty snazzy. Gotta give a shout out to @thelinuxcast for having a Lynx friendly website

Beholden thy #SBC abomination of jank. A #MangoPi MqPro plugged into a #OrangePi Zero W2 that controls 2 #RaspberryPiZeros (W & 2W) and a #RockPro64.
So much janky awesomeness in one place, it’s almost too much to handle! I now “offically” feel like a SBC enthusiast

Woot woot! All is up and running well! Even though the case was designed for a Raspberry Pi, all the ports are accessible. I added some foam feet and placed a Mango Pi sticker on it for a little fun. At the moment Im not sure if I want to adhere the wifi/bluetooth antenna.
-
New pads and heat sink installed. Had to modify a bit; the usb-c ports are slightly bigger than the Raspberry Pi’s micro usb ports. I dont plan to use the GPIO so I just turned the heat sink around and it works like a charm.

Woooooo hoooo! I got it up and running! Now what to do with it…..
