  1. For those that have been following my #SBC shenanigans for awhile, here is the current status:
    1) #Pine64 RockPi Pro is still running strong as a file server
    2) Both #MangoPi (quad and pro) have been recycled
    3) #RPi zero has been set up to be a CLI sandbox to play around with
    4) #OrangePi Zero2w & #MilkV mars both have #Debian installed but are currently collecting dust. I need to find something to do with them.

Unless something really neat comes out WITH robust support, I think my little foray into SBC will come to end; or more likely be way more sporadic.

  2. After dusting off the #sbc this weekend and tinkering with them, I have some sad news. Both of my #MangoPi (pro and quad) are being put out to the pasture. The MP pro (D1 Allwinner risc) wont post regardless the supported OS I put on it. The quad is no longer supported and I cannot find an image to flash on it; scubbing the internet has not been fortuitous.

As for the rest the jury is out. The #OrangePi Zero 2W and RV are working fine; they are just not exciting anymore.  The #MilkVMars seems too limited and lacks support from the maker but is up and running. The #RPi Z2W is chugging along just fine.

Unless I find something exciting and well supported, I think I’m kind of done with SBCs at this time.

  3. Took all of 5 minutes to “clean up” my #SBC set-up. I have downsized the SBC that I currently use. Now I am down to the following:

    1) @PINE64 Rockpro64 which is my mini #Debian file server (black box with stickers)

    2) #MangoPi Pro a D1 #riscv sbc for tinkering (small black box)

    3) #RPipico emulating a 128K Macintosh (grey box)

    4) #OrangePiRV2 (clear box) an 8core K1 riscv sbc also for tinkering.

All my other sbc are collecting dust in a box until I find a use or they end up in the e-recycling bin.

  4. Since I have had no luck with getting risc-y, I have dusted off the #MangoPi Quad to play with.

I have a #Debian sever iso installed and updated to #Trixie. #Xorg is installed and now I am compiling #CDE (Common Desktop Environment). Hopefully this turns out to be something fun.

  6. Maybe I am just a glutton for punishment, but I dusted off the #MangoPi quad to learn a new(to me) DE.

To fill my tinkering needs, I am going to learn #JWM. I like the idea of a simple desktop/window manager; let’s see if I like it in practice.

  7. 1/13/26 Update 1: the #Debian Bullseye server iso I used had a bunch of odd problems compared to the previous #XFCE Debian iso I have used on the #MangoPi Quad.

Did a reinstall of the XFCE iso, updated the repos to Bookworm, and installed a few #flatpaks. I thought to do #Snaps but those got #borked on a prior installation on the Mango Pi.

Shortwave and Dillo run great. Firefox is slow but functional. Using @ActionRetro Frog Find made both browsers way more enjoyable.

  8. Oh man! I should have jumped on the #POE bandwagon earlier.

This makes working with #SBC MUCH easier 🥳

Behold my #MangoPi tower of POE Doom ⚡️

  9. #Ubuntu server 24.04.1 is out, and new images for all supported #riscv platforms are also out!

The #MangoPI MQ Pro is not on that list, but the LicheeRV image can be used and boots well on it with working WiFi and HDMI text console (server; no GUI).

After that you can reconfigure flash-kernel to use the 'real' MQ Pro device tree and everything is working as intended.

I have a freshly re-written full-on guide to installing, (pre)configuring WiFi, changing the Device Tree and enabling Bluetooth here:

    github.com/easytarget/MQ-Pro-I

It also has some GPIO use info, and a guide + tooling + examples for generating and using your own device trees compiled against the correct headers etc.

As a bonus I show how to make the on-board status LED flash mesmerizingly.

#minimachines #mangopi #riscv

  19. @JLW_the_Jobber @postmarketOS Thanks for letting me know about the existence of . I had never heard of this SBC before. Looks very promising. I'll definitely buy one to try RISC-V out.

  22. "Where did that board go?"

*looks around, shifting chair slightly, catches something pink on the carpet and hears the crunch of surface-mount components being run over by a chair wheel*

Now I have 9 small computers.

  24. I'd like to get my feet wet with - any SBC opinions?

I saw this in a Pi Zero form factor but it seems pretty low spec. I don't know if I need more headroom to experiment.

I imagine that you're compiling a lot from source on RISC-V, which sounds uncomfortable at 1gb of ram.

  27. Seeing #raspberrypi is showing their colors today, I'll remind everyone about #MangoPi - a Pi Zero pinout compatible #RISC-V SBC. They're a lot of fun, cheap, and pink to boot. $30ish shipped from AliExpress.
