  1. CW: Manga Spoilers: Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits

Well, it looks like Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits has ended this week.

I was enjoying this manga. It was a slow paced, slice of life story about the hero of the world, a teenage girl, and this "evil" Demon Lord deciding to just stop fighting each other and try to live a normal life.

Parts of their past come back from time to time to interfere with their normal life, but it's overall a pretty chill series.

I was looking forward to where they would take it, but it ended with a rushed story arc about turning the Demon Lord back into a human. I wish it had more time to bake, because this was a fun, chill manga.

  2. CW: Manga Spoilers: Gonron Egg

So, Gonron Egg has ended this week.

Overall, I enjoyed the post-apocalyptic story. It was set in a world where creatures called Drakarchs have decimated and enslaved humanity. Gonron finds the egg of the former King of the Drakarchs, who opposed the subjugation of humans. He spends the entire series growing stronger alongside the rightful King in their quest to save humanity and overthrow the current ruler.

But the series just kind of ended mid story after a training time skip.

It answered a lot of questions, but it left it wide open. No formal closure for our characters.

I'm glad it did that, though, instead of forcing a ham-fisted ending.

  3. CW: Manga Spoilers: Kinato's Magic, Chapter 1

A new series dropped from Shonen Jump entitled "Kinato's Magic."

The first chapter introduces us to Kinato, a young man who is a magic user in a fantasy world. His magic is purely about rearranging mana and has been used by him and his family to for healing or physical therapy purposes. And it works well.

Throughout the first chapter, this shy man who doesn't believe in himself or his powers are worth anything realizes that he is.

A fantasy world story based around a character with low self esteem suddenly realizing that he is not just capable, but actually incredibly useful? I can get behind that.

    Will check out Chapter 2.

  5. CW: Manga Spoilers - Wild Strawberry

I finished the last chapter of Wild Strawberry.

    I'm glad it was over.

The manga started strong. Fascinating concept of these evil plants destroying the world, consuming / controlling people. And the sibling connection was cute, unique, fascinating.

It went into a training arc and then into a new arc about defeating the big bad VERY quickly. It just...felt rushed.

That said, the art - it's fantastic. Love it.

Story...I had such high hopes. And the reveal at the end was...uhm, confusing and undid the entire sacrifice that happened.

    Anyway, disappointing ending.

  6. CW: Manga Spoilers: Kaiju No. 8 - Series

And with that...the Kaiju No. 8 manga has ended.

The final arc was huge, and the pacing slow and methodical. It built up to the last few chapters where Kafka was going to finally defeat Number 9. And it was so satisfying.

Also, to find out how Kafka survived. Well done.

Yes, the final chapter had a "time jump" of a few months while Kafka was in a coma, but it worked IMO.

The series shifted a bit to be more action heavy from its roots of an older guy getting a shot after accidentally gaining powers. But still. Overall, I enjoyed it. I feel it concluded well while showing that they did win, the world is better, but there are still monsters in the world.

    Good bye, Kaiju No. 8.

    Thank you.

  7. CW: Manga Spoiler: Star of Beethoven

What I loved and hated was that it didn't try to really wrap up the plot. It finished this arc, this story, and just ended there. It did not try to tie up loose ends, left them dangling for readers to speculate on. In fact, the last chapter added a NEW loose end, if anything.

I'm, honestly, fine with that. Wrapping things up with an rapid-fire push to the ending doesn't work. It hurts the ending and the series overall.

Now it ends with a "What's next" moment, letting us guess where Beethoven & Yaso will go next.

I'm fine with that, even as I'm disappointed that it's over.

  8. CW: Manga Spoiler: Star of Beethoven

So, Star of Beethoven ended this week. The series, for those who didn't know, is based on the premise that the literal Beethoven is randomly resurrected in Japan and has some adventures meeting with a Japanese pianist who happens to speak German.

Both Beethoven and Yaso have interesting plot development including Yaso growing as an artist, Beethoven meeting those who actually were involved in his resurrection (and restoration of hearing), Yaso entering a music school and the introduction of a rival, etc.

It was well done. I was enjoying the aggressive Shonen interpretation of a music manga. It also introduced a bunch of plot points and then...just ended with Yaso & Beethoven on stage.

  9. CW: Manga Spoilers - Embers

Another sports manga I liked, finished. Ugh.

Embers was a fun manga about soccer. The main character was a punk kid who got into fights, but a teacher taking an interest specifically in him encouraged him to take his aggression with soccer.

The series follows him as he dives into soccer as well as his teammates as they are fighting to move onto nationals. And they do well. They beat their rivals. And then it...ends. No more tournament, no more arc, no more sports.

The final chapter flashed forward after the win to them as adults. I want to be annoyed cause I'm going to miss this extremely Shonen sports manga, but it ended its story and the way they did Haitani's ending was perfect. So, I can only be so mad.

  10. CW: Manga Spoilers: Otr of the Flame

Also, if you like the way that Kawaguchi draws big, muscular women...you're in luck. This series already introduced us to a beefy, Viking woman.

  11. CW: Manga Spoilers: Otr of the Flame

So, Viz's Shonen Jump app is now going to simulpub the newest series from Yuuki Kawaguchi, who created "The Hunters Guild: Red Hood." For reference, I loved that series and own it physically.

First chapter sold me. It's a Viking narrative set in a world where an ice kingdom has taken over. A poor teenager goes out to become a chef for frontline warriors to raise money for his sister back home. As the ice kingdom attacks, flame powers awaken and he kicks some ice monster / ice wizard butt.

This could be fun. Definitely giving it a few more chapters.

  12. CW: Manga Spoilers: Nice Prison, Chapter 1

So, Nice Prison is a new manga series. I'm down to try a first chapter of a new series, so I checked it out. I'm...no.

The story has two main character - a woman whose Dad was a prison guard so she wanted to be one and a "super model prisoner" who was born in prison to two inmates and got himself arrested for like jaywalking so he could help keep order in the prison.

    ...

So, a cop, designed to look like a child, and a fake convict are going to be keeping order in prison with a bunch of other cops / guards being largely unhelpful.

    That's the series.

    Huge pass for me.

I should've looked at the premise more before reading cause it's 100% not my thing.

  13. CW: Manga Spoilers: Astro Royale

    Re: Last Boost

I had been reading Astro Royale weekly. It had an interesting premise, but overall...eh, it was okay.

The ending, though, just rushed through a quick "Oh, let's explain where the magic powers showed up from really, really fast by shoving way too much into the very final chapter." Like, an until that point unknown sibling who was actually an alien? And her powers and a different sibling are the reason the world got weird and these "astros" showed up?

I am wracking my brain for any hint of this prior to this point. I got nothing.

    Boom - it's over.

  14. CW: Manga Spoilers: Star of Beethoven

Okay...so, Star of Beethoven is two chapters in and, I think I'm sold at this point.

The premise is introduced in Chapter 1. Yaso is a former piano prodigy who stopped after some personal event happened, you learn more about it in Chapter 2. But he is still good at the piano, just hasn't played in years. And somehow he speaks German, apparently.

Enter Beethoven. Literally. Not reincarnated as some other person or in some different form, just Beethoven strolling into a random convenience store where Yaso happened to be. Oh, and Beethoven's hearing is conveniently restored in this new life.

They end up playing together. Beethoven wants Yaso to be his student. And yea. That's the premise.

Odd, but I'm down so far.

  15. CW: Manga Spoilers - Beat & Motion

    Squeeee!

The final chapter of Beat and Motion dropped, and it was such a cute end to this series. These two have just been so cute to watch. One an aspiring pop star, one an aspiring cartoonist. And their love story was just too cute.

Glad I read this and while I wish we had more chapters, the ending was satisfying.

  16. CW: Manga Spoilers: Mission: Yozakura Family Finale

Mission: Yozakura Family has come to an end. It was a cute ending arc with Taiyo and Mutsumi renewing their marriage vows as adults, considering the series began with them being getting married. in HS

The series shifted a lot since the beginning and I very much appreciated the time skip.

Some will compare this with Spy X Family, and I get that. Cause it's secret agents and talking about family, but Mission: Yozakura Family had such a different vibe. Their family was very real, genuine, and loving. Sometimes too much so, but every moment felt like a real family that happened to be magically powered secret agents. And the ending arc, was well done.

    Glad I read it.

  17. CW: Manga Spoilers: Shojo Null

I really enjoyed Shojo Null. Frankly, I wish it was given a longer, final arc. Give me that final Gijin / Humanity war. Give me that arc.

    But, oh well.

I am glad for the story I was given and hope we get more good stories from this team in the future.

    #Manga #MangaSpoilers #ShojoNull #ShonenJump #VizMedia

  18. CW: Manga Spoilers: Shojo Null

...It ended with a flash forward blast over two ending chapters.

It ended with a final, closing chapter that was spent predominantly within the combined consciousness of all Gijin as Marie tried to find the deceased Riaha.

It was kind of a cute way to end it, but also, an odd way to end it.

It told, not showed how the ultimate war between mankind and Gijin went. Also, anti-war protesters were listened to in that world - what a world to live in.

The social commentary this series had on police abuse was incredible.

  19. CW: Manga Spoilers: Shojo Null

Shojo Null ended this week and I'm filled with a mix of emotions.

First, this was one of my favorite current ongoing series. The entire premise was wild. A world where organic robots are believed to be without sentience, but they actually have it, are basically humans with a combined consciousness - except that the government forces them to not with a device plugged into their head so they can be used as soldiers or as disposable servants.

The series had been ramping up with Riaha (human) finally cornering the security leaders from the government who were after him and Marie about to be stopped. It was a wild final arc. But...

  20. CW: Manga Spoilers: Two on Ice

I was ready to see the crew that helped train them in pairs compete against them. I was ready to see the former single master try to become a master of pairs skating.

I was ready to see our main duo actually compete together on a massive stage. Especially since it was supposed to be a televised event and they were the first pair up!

    But, alas, it ended.

At only 4 volumes, if this series drops physically, I would absolutely consider getting it and re-reading it from the beginning. I did enjoy it that much.

    #Manga #ShonenJump #TwoOnIce #MangaSpoilers #MangaReview

  21. CW: Manga Spoilers: Two on Ice

The arc that finished introduced us to some new characters and it was building up to this upcoming skating tournament set in 2022. I was ready for the tournament.

Instead, it ended just before the main duo was about to perform.

I'm kind of glad that it didn't leave us in a weird place or try to rush things with the plot. It ended at a logical place without trying to force a rapid fire ending to the series.

However, it wasn't a satisfying ending. I wanted more! I wanted to see this specific event!

    #Manga #ShonenJump #TwoOnIce #MangaSpoilers #MangaReview

  22. CW: Manga Spoilers: Two on Ice

Two on Ice has ended. This was a cute series that I was really invested in about figure skating.

Short version: Hayuma is good at sports as a kid, sees a female figure skater, becomes obsessed with teaching himself figure skating. As a teenager, he meets said girl (Kisara) and the two end up skating together in pairs.

Watching the two of them grow as individual skaters, overcome their personal issues, and grow as a skating duo had been great. It was really building up to something, I felt, that could have been very new and exciting.

  23. CW: Manga Spoilers: MamaYuyu, Series

It did wrap up...that arc, but it left the world stories open so that if the creator ever gets the chance, they could come back to it. I liked that, especially in a series that ended as soon as this one did.

TL;DR: I overall liked the series, characters, and magic system; didn't love the harem angle because of how it was written; but overall enjoyed how the series ended.

    #Manga #MamaYuYu #ShonenJump #MangaSpoilers

  24. CW: Manga Spoilers: MamaYuyu, Series

There was only one character where it was a cute, slow burn romance with Corleo that I didn't mind. The rest of the female characters all showing up and obsessing over Corleo was just...meh.

But, I rolled with it cause the overall world setting, magic system, and story arc was well done.

The ending was good. It ended basically with the story still going. Corleo is still fighting alongside his multiverse Demon Lord and Hero friends who were ready to help prevent the destruction of this multiverse.

    #Manga #MamaYuYu #ShonenJump #MangaSpoilers

  25. CW: Manga Spoilers: MamaYuyu, Series

Okay, so I'm about a week out from the end of MamaYuyu. I have opinions.

The idea of a multiverse of versions of earth with a main hero / main Demon Lord was cool, but the name became kind of irrelevant quickly as the focus shifted solely to Corleo and the multiverse of characters as opposed to a tale of a hero being raised by his Demon Lord adoptive mother.

Corleo, the magic system, the main villain, all became interesting after a while. However, the harem aspect that was really bubbling up was, for me, kind of uninteresting.

  26. CW: Manga Spoilers - Do Retry, Series

And then it just...ends there with the sister becoming quickly better. Surviving. And then a time jump to modern times where Aozora is merely a dying grandfather whose life story encourages his young adult grandson to be more motivated to folow his dreams.

It's...okay. Early chapters were a little rough, but the middle chapters really hung on & hit its stride.

TL;DR - This boxing manga series gets better & better until the Dad is revealed and...eh, it ends. And the timejump was unnecessary.

    Tags: #DoRetry #Manga #ShonenJump #MangaSpoilers

  27. CW: Manga Spoilers - Do Retry, Series

All that said, when it was clear the series was being canceled - the way it ended was...less than stellar. Aozora's father was a Japanese soldier in World War II. And disappeared.

But, then is discovered to be living in the wilderness for reasons, hiding from all of his problems.

And then Aozora finds him using his underground criminal friends to help. And then they box. And Aozora kind of wins, kind of. Mostly makes his Dad realize he needs to go home and stop hiding from reality.

  28. CW: Manga Spoilers - Akane-Banashi, Chapter 67

Akane-Banashi - Wow! Hikaru's performance is going over incredibly well. Her ability to transition between characters and completely change her voice is incredible.

And...it's all to beat Akane. I love how Akane is driving her & the two of them are going to have such an amazing rivalry.

    Love it.

Also, I had to grab this screenshot. It captures the chapter & Hikaru / Akane's interactions so well.
