Another new comic: 香穂ちゃんは顔がわからない (=Kaho-chan can't distinguish the faces) volume one.
The protagonist has prosopagnosia, and is struggling to tell apart the classmates she has just met in high school.
A distinctive feature of the visual presentation in this manga is the skillful combination of characters' faces as seen from the reader's perspective and their uniform, featureless faces as seen from the protagonist's eyes, which offers us a simulated experience of her view.
The story realistically depicts her secret efforts to identify her classmates while developing their relationship.Fortunately the author 綾野綾乃 (Ayano Ayano) is active in mastodon: @ayano_ayano

New comic book : 道端葉のいる世界 (Day By Day With Michibata Yo) volume one.
The protagonist is a non-binary university student who has just enrolled in the philosophy department.
Yo experiences the limited understanding and awkward sincerity of the classmate they fell in love with, and befriends a queer student with overseas roots through the four-color flag patch. A philosophy lecturer introduces feminist philosophy and the epistemology of discrimination to the students, and his lab serves as a space where students discuss and practice otherness. (Actually a transgender philosopher from Osaka University supervises the work.)
The diverse array of characters is rendered with great delicacy, and the panel layouts are so refined. -

New Manga Read - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Volume 14
It's been a while since I read any Frieren, but just got Volume 14 from the library recently, so had to jump into it over the weekend.
Great volume. We're in a continuing story of trying to protect Serie from would be assassins. We also learn more about the group of people trying to assassinate Serie.

The volume opens with the Golem explaining to Shizuno how they met Somali. It's so sad, but a sweet moment and helps you see their past together.
That's when it happens. Someone finally connects the dots that Somali is a human. The back half of the volume is a mad race to escape and keep Somali safe. The heel turn of "Aunt" Rosa, the bipedal axolotl who had been kind to Somali is...phew.
And the final panels. I won't reveal more, because it's a lot.
Also, only one volume left. How is this story going to end?

The story is hers, about her life and experiences as a trans woman in Japan. Between chapters, she talks about LGBTQ+ rights and laws in Japan to help explain what she went through.
It was a very interesting read and a cute one, as she also talks about her love story with her husband.

So, last night I started reading Volume 4 of A Cat From Our World and the Forgotten Witch. I couldn't put it down, so read both of the last two volumes.
My goodness, is the ending intense.
In the final two volumes, we learn the backstory of the Dowager Empress. We learn more about the summoning and imprisonment of Jeanne's dragon. It's all so tragic and all so well crafted.
Also, the reveal of the truth behind the Demon King and the Dowager Empress was well done.

Volume 11 of this series continues to be low stakes and chill. This volume, Elda and her Miko visit Osaka for a festival ran by her fellow elf Yorde. It's a fire based festival and it rains, so they work together to make due.
Again, it's low stakes, slice of life of an elf being treated like a goddess who is a massive introvert. It's fun, silly, and a quick read.
Also, Elda saying she people'd too much cause she's such an introvert? I get it.

In Volume 3 it's been made very clear, the hero who was Jeanne's friend was forced into a marriage with the woman who currently rules the kingdom. She wanted to ensure no one could challenge her power and authority, so she was the one who had Jeanne stripped of her powers.
Her son, Robbin, is a sweetheart and accidentally meets Jeanne in the woods. He hides who he is. His trauma, oof.
The volume ends with a bang. It's a lot and it's well done.

New comics on the strange couples in the forest.
The Assassin Wants to Kill the Immortal Witch (vol. 1) is a story of two unfortunate people: a lonely woman and an ex-slave boy rescued by her. This first book does not yet depict the situation described in the title, but concentrate on the peaceful, secret, and vulnerable daily lives they have just started.
I'll Tell You, My Dear Demon King features the similar relationship between a human girl who was persecuted by others and a young, gentle, and strong demon. The strong-willed and outspoken woman is charming for the contrast between her various expressions and her inner worries, while the benign demon has family problems in his background. The story are going to get dramatic.

Except after saving the world, Himmel betrays Frieren, has her locked up, stripped of her powers, and he becomes king. She then escapes, moves into a secluded woods and lives in secret, despite the fact that the world still worships the former witch who saved the world, no one nearby realizing that it's her.
She's hated by the local community...and then summons a giant housecat from RL as her helper.
Volume 1 was so well done and unexpected.

She's hated by the local community...and then summons a giant housecat from RL as her helper.
Volume 1 was so well done and unexpected.

I was at a very small library a week or so ago and saw this sitting on the shelf, so picked it up.
This story follows Jeanne, a witch who historically helped saved the world, and the cat Mew. Mew is from our world and was summoned by Jeanne into her world. It's an isekai where the cat was sent to a world of magic. But instead is giant sized in that world.
What's most interesting is the premise with Jeanne.
I'm going to frame her narrative in terms of Frieren for those familiar with that series

So, I have been reading Under Doctor since it came out weekly. I don't love it.
Let me step back. Under Doctor is a series about a man who is a doctor in the underworld, using his gifts at combat and finding pressure points to save people's lives. He wasn't always this way, but I digress - you can read the manga if that interests you.
I keep considering dropping it, but then it gives me poignant moments like this one that make me go, "Fine, I'll stay for now."
And this scene was so well done.
So yea, still reading it.

波のしじまのホリゾント (Horizon in the silent beach / In der Stille shauen wir den Horizont) has finished in volume five. The strange interactions between an elementary school boy and his older brother's ex-girlfriend are depicted with humor and tenderness, along with the adolescent anxieties of each character.
大海に響くコール (Call echo in the oceans: the final fourth book) is a serious story of high school girls who are interested in orcas. The protagonists, a shy beauty and her cheerful friend, are worried about their life paths and their own self-worth, which are depicted both practically and symbolically through their interest in orcas. The visual expressions are so beautiful. -

榮国物語 春華とりかえ抄 (episodes of the siblings who swapped positions) is a story in a premodern China-like society The sister in the government office and her brother in a harem exchange information and trying to defeat the cabals within the Imperial court. The Chinese-style architectural designs are beautiful, and her relationship with her boss is also interesting!
新聞記者ヴィルヘルミナ (Wilhelmina, the journalist / Wilhelmina, die Zeitungsreporterin) is a story of the workers in a small newspaper company in a 16th-century Germany-like society. It rather deals with contemporary issues such as the relationship between the press and commercialism, and how to handle scandals. -
Short impressions of recent comic books: rom-coms with new approaches.
かわいいのは俺である (=the one who is cherished/petted is me!, three volumes so far). As the title suggests, this story is about a man who wants to maintain a cool image, but gets flustered when an ordinary-looking woman teases him. Similar comedies that focus on the failures of masculinity have been increasing (again?) in Japanese comics recently.
高みの鷹見さん (Takami-san at high places) is a story of a male protagonist who becomes a high-altitude worker and his young female senior colleague. While high-altitude scenery and large structures are very appealing, the episodes often rely on sexual jokes. -
Short impressions: original works of the recent animes.
Kowloon Generic Romance has finished with a bit different conclusion than the anime, and with more delicate nuances, more shocking visual expressions, and more use of the symbolic props such as sunflowers and goldfish.The ninth volume of original comic Invisible Man is just published this month while the anime adaptation had covered episodes from the first six volumes of the original work in a non-linear fashion.
According to the afterword in this book, the anime was recorded in pre-scoring, that is, the actors performed first before the pictures were produced to match the voices, which is so unusual as seasonal animes in Japan. The fact suggests how much effort and care went into creating this work. -
Short impressions of the recent comics: featuring Nordic region.
Snow and Ink (vol. 9) now focuses on business conflicts war over the arms trade, but the main subject remains on the misunderstandings between the protagonist and her sister. It was surprising to see how the artist transitioned from a sharp, narrow-eyed style to soft, romantic expressions, and even to scenes where the character's face melts (literally) in intense emotion and delusion.
Ashen Feline and Silver Feather is a drama of an ex-sniper woman and an ex-child soldier in a Finland-like country. From a poignant healing story, this final volume faces the war again, ending up with a bitter conclusion but narrowly avoided a catastrophe.
Comrade vol. 3: finally heads to the front lines after training. -

This is, as always, an extremely silly and fun manga.
Volume 10 hit more of Happy Home Paradise, did some wedding season jokes, and other in jokes that are a lot funnier if you play Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
I do, so I really enjoyed it. Had a few chuckle out loud moments.
Lots of fun for Animal Crossing players.
