New Read - Animal Crossing: New Horizons Deserted Island Diary, Volume 10

This is, as always, an extremely silly and fun manga.

Volume 10 hit more of Happy Home Paradise, did some wedding season jokes, and other in jokes that are a lot funnier if you play Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

I do, so I really enjoyed it. Had a few chuckle out loud moments.

Lots of fun for Animal Crossing players.

Meet Killy, a mysterious man with a few words in a future where even the concepts of time and space seem to be lost. His mission is to find a human whose genes have not been altered too much. Those genes are the only way for humans to re-establish contact with the net sphere, a space or entity that is cut from the rest of the world, in order to remove the looming threat of annihilation.
Silicon life, Toha Heavy Industries, Safeguards, the plot can be confusing sometimes, so, if you cannot get in its particular flow, the story for you will simply be “a boy with a big gun goes up a LOT of stairs, looking to repair wifi”.

New Manga Read - I Wanna Be Your Girl (Volume 2)

This series is very good presenting sensitive topics about gender and sexuality of teenagers in a way that works in a cute, romance setting where a girl has a crush on her longtime best friend.

The second volume did a great job of helping Hime come more to grips with the idea that she's not heterosexual, which she was struggling with in Volume 1.

Now I wait for my library network to get a copy of Volume 3 for me to read!

New Manga Read - Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You, Volume 2

After feeling uncomfortable about the age gap in Volume 1, when I saw Volume 2 at the library, I decided to give it another shot.

It's cute. It's a slow burn, pun intentional. It's still weird, to me, the strange obsession with our female lead in cashier mode.

But, it's well written, love the art, and the characters are engaging.

So, even as I find the age gap dynamic a little odd and unsettling, I still enjoyed the second volume.

We'll see if I read 3.

New Manga Read - The Muscle Girl Next Door

Skinny guy Daria lives next door to the incredibly muscular Ruby and he's head over heels into her. The entire series follows as he slowly tries to befriend and hopefully get her to notice him in a romantic way.

Daria is shy, nervous, and very skinny. Ruby is outgoing and very muscular. Daria's super into his muscle mommy neighbor.

It's largely a harmless and cute slow burn romance between these two characters with some friends along the way helping them actually get together.

Cute read I found at the library.

I Wanna Be Your Girl is the story of two teenage girls. One is cis-gender (Hime), and one has decided to be out as transgender (Akira) as she enter High School.

The primarily follows Hime as she tries to protect her friend facing transphobia. It also hits Hime facing her own feelings.

She has been in love with Akira for as long as she can remember. However, Akira is a girl. And she's grappling with what that means about her.

It's well done exploring these topics, so far. Checking out volume 2 if my library has it.

This weekend, my oldest took the SAT's and I ended up waiting for him at the local library near the testing center. So, I finished up reading My Sister, The Cat.

It does not disappoint in a very cute story of found family with a human living with a cat family.

New Manga Read - My Sister, The Cat (Volume 1)

At the library with my youngest, when she found this. The premise? After a teenage boy's Mother dies, he's taken in by an all cat family, the Mom of whom was close friends with his late mother, as he finishes high school. Of note, he is the only human in the household.

The entire first volume introduces us to Nekota, the teen boy, and his little cat sister Neneko.

It's very cute story with a much older sibling and a much younger sibling dynamic. Plus cute cats.

It's very cute and sweet, which is all it needs to be.

Great art, captured the story. But overall, you need the movie(s) to fill in plot gaps. That said, it did take Mewtwo's internal trauma and questions about self seriously, which I appreciated. I feel the remake film did not take that seriously enough when compared to the original film.

I liked it, but overall it's more a supplement for those who already saw the movie more than a stand alone manga.

Did you watch Pokémon: The First Movie? Did you watch the mediocre all CG remake from 2019? This manga is kind of a tie in to the remake from 2019.

The manga tells the story of Mewtwo. The origin of Mewtwo, him turning to Team Rocket for a while, then going off on his own. Also, the power of friendship saving the day.

I loved the original movie, so I was excited for a manga adaptation. It...was okay.

New Read - Neon Genesis Evangelion, Omnibus 5 (Volumes 13-14)

Wow. Okay, so that's the end of Evangelion.

This is the final volume of the manga and a content warning, there's a lot of non-sexualized nudity that mirrors that which was shown in the anime.

But the ending. It's...different.

Shinji makes a different choice at the end, the world ends differently and honestly, I like this ending better than the original End of Evangelion movie ending.

All in all, I'm glad I read the manga. Glad I got into this series.

New Read - Somali and the Forest Spirit, Volume 4

Another amazing volume. This one finishes up their encounter with Uzoi and Haitora. It's an incredible moment as Haitora reveals his own past, what he went through, and how he found Uzoi. And a tale of forgiveness.

As they continue on their quest, we run into Shizuno and Yabashira again, who appear to have figured out what Somali is. Not to harm her, but Shizuno wants to understand why the Golem is willing to go to such lengths for her.

It's a great volme and...ugh, I need volume 5 to drop physically already.

New Read - Kirby Manga Mania, Volume 8

As always, the Kirby manga is so incredibly!

For those who don't know, the Kirby manga is a gag, slice of life manga set in the Dreamlands with Kirby, King Dedede, and assorted other characters from the games getting into silly situations.

This volume is no different. So goofy, so silly, so weird.

My favorite moment was Kirby losing it when he can't his disposable chopsticks don't cleanly snap.

First Impressions - Alien Headbutt, Chapter 1

The Premise: Pro-wrestler returns to his hometown after becoming a wrestling superstar only to find that his hometown has been overrun with aliens. Now he uses his wrestling skills to take out the aliens and find his family.

That's the premise. That's what happens in Chapter 1. He leaves his hometown, which is a tiny island of ~5,000 people, moves to Tokyo, becomes a Japanese wrestling sensation. Then he returns home to show them the belt...and aliens are there.

It ends with him getting ready to search for his family and take out any alien in the way.

Got into it real fast, but with a solid pace and a fun first chapter.

Will add it to my weekly reading.

This single volume mostly just tells stories in the universe where this humanoid robot and teenage boy live. The earliest stories involve them. But some of the others are used to expand the universe and introduce other characters.

Apparently this served as a kind of prequel to a current ongoing manga of the same name.

It's an intriguing world setting, but the stories are largely about folks looking for work in a post-apocalyptic world. Been there and, for me, there's not enough of a hook to get me interested in checking out the sequel series.

New Read - Mechanical Buddy Universe (Single Volume)

Mechanical Buddy Universe is a manga volume that is really a series of vignettes.

This entire volume sets up a world setting in a post-war world where androids exist and fought in numerous combat roles. The story follows a feminine presenting android who raised a human infant they found abandoned. However, most of the stories are set AFTER the baby is an adult, not really showing the "robot raising a human" story I was expecting.

I was expecting something like Somali and the Forest Spirit. What I got was...not that.

New Manga Read - Confession (Complete Series)

Wow.

This single volume, 11 chapter series is an entire dramatic bottle episode.

Two hikers, Asai and Ishikura, are hit with a massive storm while mountain climbing. They think they're going to die. That's when Ishikura admits he murdered a woman they both knew years ago.

Then they find a cabin to safely stay in until the storm passes.

The rest of the story takes place within the cabin. It is a roller coaster with an ending I did not exactly expect.

Wild thriller.

This is a thing I need to keep reminding myself - "not every piece of media is for everyone."

If I don't like a thing you love, so what? If you hate a manga that I treasure, who cares?

It really doesn't matter. We all have different ideas, different thoughts, different tastes in what stories we find interesting and want to engage with.

I like plenty of stories that have similar concepts to this. A child prodigy living alone with friends filling a familial role? I've read various series like that, which hit me and I loved.

But not this one.

And that's. That's okay.

We don't all have to like the same things.

New Read - March Comes in like Lion, Volume 1

I. Uhm. Hmm.

So, I saw Volume 1 of this at the library and thought, "Sure, I'll check it out. A lot of folks I know loved the anime."

After reading Volume 1, I'm torn. It's a somber tale that appears to be leaning into the found family angle, which I normally like. But something about this doesn't appeal to me.

It felt like a slog to get through Volume 1. While I felt more engaged towards the end of the volume, I just don't think I want to read any more.

I did not enjoy it.

New Read - Neon Genesis Evangelion, Omnibus 4 (Volumes 10-12)

One word defines these volumes more than anything else: Kaworu

Yes, the last volume gets to NERV being invaded mirroring the plot from End of Evangelion in many ways, but Kaworu dominates this volume.

Those who ship Shinji and Kaworu would do well to read the manga. Their relationship is more intense, more overtly romantic, more kissing than in the anime.

It also makes Kaworu's death at the hands of Unit 01 all the more intense.

Fantastic volume, once again.

We continue in the small town where the Golem is working to collect money for their trip. Somali gets sick and they had to get medicine for her...spending most of what Golem had earned to avoid revealing her identity as human.

It's a moment. Also, this moment with Kokilila is amazing. No parent is perfect. Sometimes I know I need to hear that.

The second half shifts gears as they travel and meet some new folks...including someone else hiding their identity.

Great story.

New Read - Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 14 (Final Volume)

And with that, it is finished.

I have mixed feelings.

I enjoyed the ending. It was a fitting end to the series and worked well. It also tied up so many loose ends.

Although the romantic subtext between Marcille and Laios OR between Marcille and Falin was never really explored and my goodness did they have various chances by the end.

But, I regardless of me trying to ship characters, I think it ended well and each character's ending was earned.

Glad I read this series.

New read - Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 13

My goodness! Laios outsmarted the demon.

We got some great backstory of the demon who created the dungeon. What a great moment to really understand the character better.

But yea, this was a moment where Laios outsmarted one of the most powerful beings in the entire universe.

But, at what cost? That's how it ends. We're not sure yet.

Final volume next. Thankfully, I already have it from my library.

New Read - Neon Genesis Evangelion, Omnibus 3 (Volumes 7-9)

Wow. This is a lot.

The aftermath of the situation with Unit 03 and Toji. How Shinji emotionally is just...broken. And then his melding into the LCL for a time and his mother and him starting to piece together more of what the Eva units are. It's a lot.

Also, more of Kaiji's backstory than I remember from the anime. Plus the completion of his arc. Wow. Well done.

Also, Asuka's emotional and mental attack. Plus the addition of Kaworu toward the end of the omnibus.

A lot went on.

New Read - Shuna's Journey

Shuna's Journey is a 1983 manga written by Hayao Miyazaki inspired by the Tibetan folktale "The Prince Who Turned into a Dog." This story follows a prince who is looking for grain to save his people and the hardships he faces along the way.

It's well done. Miyazaki writes the entire story out while simultaneously presenting the gorgeous artwork with aesthetics inspired by traditional Tibetan imagery.

It's a great take on a folktale.

Also, interestingly, the original Japanese release date is two weeks before my literal birth date. So, that's fun.

New read - Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 12

Plot. My goodness. Plot. Laios' realization about the power of the dungeon. And Marcile. Oh goodness, the manipulation of Marcile by the demon was just...so much.

It was such a well done volume.

Only 2 more before I finish the series. Let's see if I can get them from my library network!

When our investigative student leaves Innsmouth, that's when the twist occurs. It begins mid-story with the main character about to kill himself after the horrors he saw in Innsmouth. But yea, when it catches back up to the intro I was like...eh.

The art was fantastic and gruesome. May look into more work by Tanabe. Not necessarily interested in more from Lovecraft, though.

New Read - H.P. Lovecrat's The Shadow Over Innsmouth (manga adaptation)

I've never read any Lovecraft before. I saw this at the library as a single volume adaptation by artist Gou Tanabe and decided to check it out.

It's horrifying and interesting to read. But, perhaps it's me, but the twist ending didn't exactly hit as hard as I think it's supposed to.

Short version: Innsmouth is a New England port town that has been shunned by the neighboring communities out of fear of their strange practices. Our lead is investigating the town and comes to see some of the horrors within.

I am trying not to give spoilers as I read through Delicious in Dungeon. Not everyone wants to find out without a spoiler tag what happens as the series goes along BUT, my goodness. This was a great volume.

Moving the overall plot along, Laios love of monsters keeping him safe in such a fascinating manner, new monsters to be eaten, the golden lion, new reveals. And that ending of the volume.

What a journey to get to this point.

Can't wait to dive into Volume 12.

Luka is a handsome, chiseled vampire living in the demon realm. One day he's hungover and sore, so he goes to a bathhouse in the human realm to ease his pain and magically, he feels better. Enter Sakura, the 20 something man who is running this family bathhouse with his Grandfather.

Luka sucks Sakura's blood bonding them.

Basically, it's a slice of life romantic comedy between a pansexual vampire and the not yet ready to call himself gay bathhouse operator. Lots of strategically placed steam for mostly nude dudes.

Overall, cute and largely chill.

Another of my weekend reads was Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 10. I read it while waiting in the car as my oldest took the SAT on Saturday morning.

A lot of movement as our heroes make their way to trying to save Falin, meet up with the Lunatic Magician. The ending of this volume. Oof.

Glad I already got Volume 11 checked out from my library! Phew.

Just...a bit more explanation.

This story is largely about teenagers trying to find themselves with parents not always accepting them, especially with Rin learning to acknowledge their transness. But also, it is a lot with spacy dream realms where the characters are different versions of themselves and meet souls that flutter around based on the true nature of the individual.

It was weird and cool and...kind of thoughtful.

Again, I am glad I read it.

New Read - Astro Biologist Pratess

My oldest is taking the SAT this morning, so I stopped at a nearby library to chill while I wait for him to finish. I randomly found this collection.

The story follows a trio of friends and their experiences in a dream reality of souls. It is very spacy and esoteric. Both self aware set in alternate realities and grounded about teenagers coming of age and accepting themselves in different ways. Whether it is Rin accepting their gender or Nagi accepting she wants to continue to live far apart from her mother. Reality is blurred in the story.

Unique read. Worth checking out.

Offshore Lightning is a collection of individual stories from Saito Nazuna. They are mostly about mundane, everyday life.

The stories aren't flashy. They're all modern-ish, real, and personal stories about people just living with the highs and lows that come with that.

Some of the stories end with a hard stop, others end with no real closure. But, that's life and fits the style.

The stories were written in different periods in Nazuna's life and reflect the things people go through at different stages in life.

Overall, an interesting and unique read.
