  2. Unexpectedly spotted this Smooth-coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) this morning (3 June 2025) on the way to work at one-North: Fusionpolis North Park. It sniffed at some scat on the walkway before moving off.

These are handphone photos, so not very sharp.

  4. A Smooth-coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) spotted at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore on 15 Dec 2024. It was sandbathing on the path, then moved behind the shelter in the background for some privacy. There, I managed to make eye contact with it.

  5. A pair of Smooth-coated Otters (Lutrogale perspicillata) spotted at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve on 15 March 2025. They were sandbathing at this spot for a while. Visitors passing by had a good view of them from the path next to the spot. Later on, they went to a nearby pond for a swim.

  7. A Sunda Colugo (Galeopterus variegatus) mother and infant spotted at Ulu Sembawang Park Connector, Singapore on 24 Nov 2024, spotted high up on a tree. The last shot was taken later, after the infant shifted position.

Colugos are nocturnal gliding mammals and usually rest against trees in the daytime.

  8. An unexpected sighting: two Common Treeshrews (Tupaia glis) confronting each other in the open at Bukit Gombak Park, Singapore on 20 July 2024. They vanished into the undergrowth after I took this hurried shot.

  9. The Lesser Short-nosed Fruit Bats (Cynopterus brachyotis) are residents of the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Centre. These are mothers with infants clinging on to them, with one curious youngster staring at the strange primate taking shots. 🙂 Taken on 26 May 2024.

I've seen these common bats in the neighbourhood, going for the fruits in the trees planted by residents.

  11. Marsupial and Placental #Mammals Evolved in #Gondwana, Paleontologists Say sci.news/paleontology/gondwana

    The Gondwanan Origin of #Tribosphenida (#Mammalia) tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10

The research indicates that #Theria evolved in Gondwana, thriving and diversifying there for 50 million years before migrating to #Asia during the Early #Cretaceous epoch. Once they arrived in Asia they diversified rapidly, filling many ecological niches.

  12. Got close and more personal with one of the Smooth-coated Otters (Lutrogale perspicillata) at the Pandan river, Singapore, today. It swam up to the shore only a few metres away and gave me a curious look.

  13. This is a travesty.

I'm particularly saddened, and deeply affected, when these types of events occur. #Marine_Mammals, coastal species of birds and #invertebrates are close to my heart, and a big part of the sustainability of life on this planet.

  14. Spotted a member of one Smooth-coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) family near the bridge over the Pandan River, Singapore, on May 15, 2019. It was busy with its meal and wasn't bothered with the people gawking at it eating.

  15. A Smooth-coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) family reappeared at the Pandan River, Singapore, looking for food. Getting shots of them in the water is a bit of a challenge as they move about and dive. But I got lucky and this fellow popped up in front of me and gave me time to take a shot. Taken in the morning on 12 April, 2019.

  16. Spotted a family of Smooth-coated Otters (Lutrogale perspicillata) at Pandan River, Singapore, on 5 March 2019. Several had caught fish and having a meal.

I was standing next to them by the side of the river, so this was the closest I've been to them yet. They occasionally gave me a stare, so I didn't stay too long so as not to disturb their meal.

    Fun and exciting.
