  1. From answer engines to learning engines — Why fast answers are like fast food

People crave fast answers. But the purpose of information systems is to help people gain knowledge. So we should seek better questions.

  8. In 2025, it might be a good idea to install "Who wrote that?" now, a browser add-on by @wikimediafoundation

It adds a link "Who wrote that?" under "Tools", on every #Wikipedia page. If you click it, the revision history for the respective page is scanned in the background, and you get tooltips giving you #author info for every piece of text, plus highlighting of the other parts of the page they also edited.

I believe you know why you might want this.

Currently works for the following Wikipedia languages: AR, DE, EN, ES, EU, FR, HU, ID, IT, JA, NL, PL, PT, TR.

    False, no harm intended.

#Disinformation: lies, "fake news", made up stuff
    False, harm intended.

#Malinformation: leaks, disclosures, decontextualization, framing, insinuation

  10. Mapping automatic social media information disorder. The role of bots and AI in spreading misleading information in society

The analysis focused on four research questions: 1) the distribution of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation across different platforms; 2) recurring themes in fake news and their visibility; 3) the role of artificial intelligence as an authoritative and/or spreader agent; and 4) strategies for combating information disorder. The role of AI was highlighted, both as a tool for fact-checking and building truthiness identification bots, and as a potential amplifier of false narratives.

  11. [#INFORMATIONDISORDER] Such a pleasure to read again the dense and smart thoughts of @cward1e encouraging us to stop using "fake news", to better look at "narratives" (and less at the "atoms of content), to promote "good stuff" rather than fighting "bad stuff"...

Thanks to @N_Henin, who spotted this article.

  12. "Twitter needs to become by far the most accurate source of information about the world," #Twitter owner #ElonMusk tweeted last November, shortly after acquiring the company. "That’s our mission."

Excuse me, but WHAT is this dude talking about? Since paying an obscene amount of money for Twitter, Musk has spent all his time on destroying the platform, and turning it into a haven for #rightwing #misinformation, #disinformation, and #malinformation.

    Is this a joke?

  13. In "Misunderstanding #Misinformation" @cward1e discusses the terms "#misinformation, #disinformation, and #malinformation under the umbrella term information disorder." "These terms [...] represent an overly simple, tidy framework I no longer find useful." ”Researchers need to move away from our fixation on accuracy and zoom out to understand the characteristics of some of these online spaces that are powered by people’s need for connection, community, and affirmation.” issues.org/misunderstanding-mi

  14. Dealing with this BS since 2009… finally FINALLY it gets exposed!!!
Kudos to this incredible team of investigative journalists!
Kudos to @FbdnStories to pull this monumental & important work off! Way to go. Way to go!

    RT @OCCRP
NEW: A reputation management firm called Eliminia has helped drug traffickers, fraudsters, and other criminal actors bury online reports of their crimes …

  15. Even more concerningly a lot of what the report describes under the frame of asserting a conspiracy to influence and monitor the public is actually 77 Bde’s appalling incompetence and weak governance going wrong… “We got started and helped out with the existing team of around 8 counter #misinformation #disinformation #malinformation (‘mis/dis/mal’) operators. …I also found it astonishing how little experience they had in #cyber, being a team sourced from across all areas of defence…”

  16. #Introduction I am new to Mastodon and am a devotee of #diversity, #democracy, fairness, and freedom. #Disinformation, #misinformation and #malinformation vex me, as do #xenophobia, #transphobia, #homophobia and all other behaviours considered hateful. Live and let live; diversity creates a vibrant, fascinating world. As for animals, I have a dog and three cats.

  17. Seems like a nice community here (and man, I like that I have more than 280 signs to blab on and on about stuff), so I'm gonna put out a question:

While I'm still struggling with adjusting the language in my mastodon app, I have done some looking around and haven't found many people who talk about #disinformation. Now, I'm aware that this might absolutely be due to my still-finding-the-lay-of-the-land status here, but perhaps someone has some suggestions?

Anyone who works on / is interested in the following? And this post also very elegantly lets me make my point that we live in a definition spahgetti bowl :skp345:

    #propaganda #misinformation #disinformation #infowars #infowar #influenceoperations #interference #hybridthreats #informationdisorder #informationintegrity #informationmanipulation #cib #computationalpropaganda #informationchaos #malinformation

Oh, I also like "problematic information" - it's so precise, no? Tells you EXACTLY what you mean, no?

And for good order, I also mention #fakenews even though I can talk a long time about why we shouldn't use it.

If I missed any terms, don't be shy and add them with a brief explanation of why it's necessary to use that term instead of any of the other ones (yes, I'm looking for fellow nerds :dy54:)

  18. This morning at #SaskLA2022 I heard about music as language with Tomson Highway, I’ve learned about how #libraries can help fight #disinformation and #malinformation , and I learned about the history of #safeSpaces and their application in the #publicLibrary.
Now I just need to see about keeping my energy up through the afternoon sessions 😅
