Von Georgetown ging es zurück nach Kuala Lumpur für meinen letzten Tag in Südostasien.

Nach dem Checkout stöberte ich kurz in der größten Buchhandlung, in der ich je war, verfolgte dann in einem Irish Pub in Bukit Bintang den Australien-Grand Prix und fuhr am Nachmittag noch auf den KL Tower hoch.

Dort hat man eine ziemlich arge Aussicht über die Stadt - der kommende Regen zwang uns dann zwei Stunden lang ins Innere des Turms.

Auf den Hügeln – und im ganzen Nordwesten Penangs – gibt es eine UNESCO-Naturschutzzone, die auch den Nationalpark umfasst. Im touristisch aufbereiteten "The Habitat" kann man durch eine Regenwaldlandschaft wandern.

Am zweiten Tag in Penang ging es zuerst mit dem Linienbus aus Georgetown raus in eine Vorstadt – inklusive Verständigungsschwierigkeiten mit dem Busfahrer bezüglich Destination fürs Ticket.

Dort ist die Talstation der Bahn, mit der man auf die Hügel rund um die Stadt gelangen kann. Die Hügel tragen so klingende Namen wie "Bukit Bendera" (Flaggenmasthügel) oder "Strawberry Hill" (Erdbeerhügel), werden verwirrenderweise als Ganzes aber "Penang Hill" genannt als wäre es nur ein Hügel.

Dass dort oben Infrastruktur existiert, liegt an der Angst der Briten vor einem französischen Angriff in den napoleonischen Kriegen. Also rodete man die Spitze und baute einen Aussichtspunkt Richtung Meer im Norden.

Am nächsten Tag ging es nach Georgetown auf der Insel Penang. Die Stadt ist bekannt für ihre Streetart, die ich natürlich auch gleich mal besichtigt und mit der Handykamera eingefangen habe.

Die Drahtinstallationen erzählen historische Begebnisse aus der Stadtgeschichte - im Bild hier die in der "Love Lane" wohnenden Geliebten der chinesischstämmigen verheirateten Handelsmänner.

Andere Streetart wird auch einfach zu Werbezwecken angebracht, siehe hier das Beispiel mit Mona Lisa.

Und damit ging es über 270 Treppenstufen nach oben in die Haupthöhle. Natürlich hat es genau, als ich und ein anderer Reisender aus Alaska gerade überlegt hatten, welchen Teil des Komplexes wir uns zuerst anschauen, zu schütten begonnen.

Ausgerüstet mit einem Regenschirm unseres Guides, erklommen wir die Stufen schließlich im Regen und schauten uns in der Haupthöhle um.

After we went to Sandakan we went back to Kota Kinabalu and took a quick boat ride to Mamutik Island, which is just a little ways off the coast of Kota Kinabalu. We went for the beach and while it couldn’t live up to our best beach trips (like the Perhentian Islands) it was the most convenient way to sneak a little beach time in to the end of the trip
