I have worked with Brits for years and years and even if there are different views, compromises are made, solutions found and subsequently we worked together to achieve the mutual goals. Proportional representation is there, except in politics!

The current FPTP system results in daft things like Helen Godwin being elected Mayor with just 25.0% of the vote (not a pop at her particularly). A preference list ensures ending up with a broadly acceptable winner.
