Now hear me out please and let me know if this is wildly out. Lots of talk about taxing billionaires. But I *think* you might find it wouldn't even cover one week's worth of change recently in the budget black hole let alone give loads of dosh to spend on pet projects. UK's 55 billionaires if similar to those across the world, would be "worth" about $296bn in total. Not even 3/4 of a Musk. If you were to tax that capital value at 5% (a simple proxy for the entire income flow fro $296bn invested) you'd get just $14bn a year in extra tax.
If you want to tax better, stop looking at merely how much people have. And as Churchill said in his enlightened days as a #Georgist Liberal ask instead "how did you get it" and reward those who produce the wealth and tax those who take the surplus generated by the whole of society. #abolishtaxes #sharetherents #makepovertyhistory

These amounts of money are mind boggling, really.
Given that a billion seconds = 31.7 years, Truss' vacant stint equates to 1,426.5 years by the same measure. A millennium and a half's worth at a £ a second.
That lettuce was proper value for money by comparison.

Still trying to get my head round it taking 39 years for Comic Relief to raise £1.6bn in public donations, but less than 49 days for Liz Truss to spaff £45bn of public funds in tax cuts to the rich.
Hats off to all who have donated to Comic Relief and the good work carried out.
All that money sloshing about that this Tory government squanders just sends my moral compass reeling
