100 of the ~280 linden trees of #Mäkelänkatu in #Helsinki have been cut. Some of the last trunks are being removed right now.
Judging from the growth rings, some of these trees were about 50 years old and had their best days a few decades ago, but also some good summers recently. Trees rarely manage to grow old in Helsinki before being cut.
Generally the excuses to cut trees are BS. Some of these trees might have been unhealthy, sure, but 100 of them? I doubt.

To be fair, #Mäkelänkatu is quite a rare sight in Helsinki. Almost nowhere around here were trees given the time to grow to maturity.
Pohjolankatu, some 3 km up north, is the only serious competitor. Let's hope these trees survive future renovations.
