  1. Note about the text and script: This is the Arabic translation as used in the Coptic Bible today. The script is based on a 9th c. sample loosely called "Christian Kufi", found in the earliest dated Arabic biblical manuscripts. I've slightly formalised it for this.

  5. FORTRESS OF THE HEART

Cinnabar in gum tempera, lamp black ink and gold leaf on watercolour paper. 56x56 cm.

A piece born of a day of overwhelm and depression last month, and of wondering where to find a respite.

  11. And while one book is in preparation, another can be unveiled...

    The Book of Ruination

Artist book × paper sculpture. Gold on hand-cut paper, gold-plated chain. 15x15x2 cm in handmade slipcase. Limited Edition of 12.

In the context of my Solastalgia series, I wanted to make a beautiful but stark sculptural object telling a story gone wrong…

  14. I had such a grand time at Stanford with both The #Handmade Book exhibit and the #Uncertainty & the Handmade collegium, and met more lovely interesting folks than I can list! The recording of my talk, "The Art of Letting Go", is already online:

  15. #Throwback to 2017:

    PERPLEXITY
Acrylic and Gold leaf 23.75ct on paper, hand-cut, assembled on mount board. 64x64 cm.

Inspired by an Ibn Arabi quote: "I threw myself into perplexity and He left me swimming in it."

The word ḥīra حيرة here eludes any recognition unless you know it’s there. The pattern was cut out from a single sheet of black card, which adds to the confusion by casting shadows where it is lifted.

  16. Another throwback: WHO AM I, acrylic on paper, hand-cut, assembled on canvas.122x122x3 cm. 2014

The large blue word is Ana: me or I. But come closer and it dissolves into hundreds of other pronouns: he, she, they… (هو هما هم هي هما هن)
What “I” believed to be “me” is really an accumulation of elements from society, parents, friends etc that have buried my real nature. The question is, will peeling away all these pieces reveal something, or only a liberating emptiness?

  17. The SOAS show is an opportunity to have a throwback to older pieces such as SHADOWS, 2014:
This composition first appears to be a take on traditional blessings: health, happiness… Yet something dark looms behind the bright hues. Closer scrutiny reveals, behind the cheerful facade, dark words in another register: greed, violence, pain…
So do we learn to cover up our inner darkness, the socially unacceptable parts of ourselves, and paint it over in order to fit in.

  18. A blast from the past with this piece I finished just over 7 years ago. Aflāk/Heavenly Spheres was the most labour-intensive wall piece I ever made. It's a calligraphic interpretation of the medieval geocentric cosmos, from the 4 elements ranging to the unknowable divine Throne, using materials that were associated with each sphere. A reminder perhaps that there are vaster things to contemplate than human pettiness.

  19. I sometimes make process videos for techniques I use or the making of entire pieces (forced into it, like many artists, by another algorithmic site). Right now I'm making a few small-scale editions of my piece Loss, with the same materials and techniques: cut paper, gold leaf and plant dyes that will fade in time. I'm having quite a lot of fun boiling up colour plants again to dye paper scraps.

  23. I'll kick off this account by sharing a few recent #artworks. This piece is from a series that reflects on the #loss of our world and what may emerge from the ruins:
LOSS فقد — #PlantDyes, gold leaf and cut paper, 50x50 cm.
It was assembled a year ago (see last pic for fresh hues) and left exposed to sunlight: the fragile plant colours become muted and fade, but the genuine gold of the seed-like dots will endure and stand out all the more.
