Of the more recent #USB drive enclosures, 3 of 7 #Orico brand, and 1 of 2 #Maiwo failed after 1 or 2 years. 1 of 2 #Sabrent arrived defective. They accepted the warranty claim and shipped a replacement on Feb 28 but at 6 PM the tracking changed from “out for delivery” to “carrier delay.” Sabrent insists I wait for the enclosure to show up. I don’t know why that would magically happen after 9 business days.
Old USB 2 and FireWire enclosures were tanks. The drive always failed first. …

And USB drive enclosures are crap. I have 5 drives in my RAID. I bought matching #Orico enclosures. I've had a 60% failure rate. I replaced two of the enclosures with a #Maiwo a year ago. If the disconnecting drive is an enclosure problem, then that's another brand to avoid.
For my own sanity I may have no other choice than to buy an expensive Synology NAS and 10 GbE card to get a DAS equivalent. I have a baby Synology DS-116 and it's a trooper.
