  1. Ann Sothern’s birthday anniversary the other day reminded me to keep up with my re-watches of the Maisie series.

Here she is the Great Ann with Red Skelton in “Maisie Gets Her Man” (1942)

  2. “Congo Maisie” (1940), on rewatch is confirmed as my least favorite of the Maisies — the Ann Sothern series that has four or five films I really love and several other good ones.

The issue here is not the main storyline, which is solid, but the setting—which the filmmakers use to portray all the African characters in horribly demeaning ways, sadly not atypical of the times.

  3. Ann Sothern and Lew Ayres in “Maisie Was a Lady” (1941) — another strong entry in the Maisie series, although the title would be more accurate as “Maisie Was a Servant” or “Maisie Serves a Lady”

  5. Ann Sothern, 1940

“If you think I'lI ever be a star—I mean a leading lady in the glamor traditiona—you're crazy. And if I thought so, I'd be crazy. I'm a character actress and I love it. I have to act hard, and act all over.”

  7. Ann Sothern, 1939

“On Location For Maisie: American director Edwin L. Marin at lunch with members of the cast of his comedy film, 'Maisie'… . Left to right: Ann Sothern, Marin, Cliff Edwards and Ruth Hussey”

  8. Ann Sothern in my favorite of all the Maisie movies, “Gold Rush Maisie” (1940).

“MAISIE GOES A-MINING.... Ann Sothern's back again as Maisie, the stranded showgirl, and in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's "Gold Rush Maisie" she's occupied with trying to find a little gold in them thar Arizona hills. Note the costume in which she sets out….”
