  1. catching up on #maintenancePhase bonus episodes and potting my new balcony #herb #garden!

I've got rosemary, lemon thyme and peppermint. the balcony is north facing, so we don't get a TON of sunlight, but hopefully it'll be enough 🤞🏼

  2. maintenancephase.buzzsprout.co ← There's a section in this #MaintenancePhase episode where Aubrey speculates on why there's a widespread "I hate them because they are smug" attitude about #vegetarians and #vegans, and it tracks so hard that I always pull it out whenever I see someone pulling that shit.

    > Michael: Right. We talked about this in our vegetarianism episode. I know this when it happened, but we also get the social construction of vegetarians and vegans as holier than thou. I mean, I have not met a vegan like this, but this idea of, “They're constantly scolding you and they think they're better than you and all this stuff.” I remember this stuff from the 90s.

    > Aubrey: Can I tell you my theory about where that comes from? So, listen, we talked about this a little bit in our food pyramid episode that there was this push by doctors to define vegetarianism as the heart healthiest diet of the thing you ought to pursue and cut out animal products. But I think that folks were feeling really judged by that and externalized that response to feeling judged as like, “They're always preaching to you.”

  3. Ooh boy I’m glad Mike & Aubrey are getting into this, as I listened to Missing Richard Simmons when it was released and felt Not So Great about it by the time the series concluded. I agree it was well-intentioned…buuut…

  4. One of the many curses of being a #psychology major is constantly resisting the urge to go on an angry rant whenever people positively bring up the MBTI.

Being anti Jungian psychology was ironically how I knew Jordan Peterson was a pseudoscientific crank from the beginning.

  5. Incredible

As someone who got married in 2005 and definitely spent a chunk of that year ✨dieting✨, I am shocked I have no memory of this awful book that apparently sold two million copies

  6. Have you been hearing a lot about the Cass Report which (although now widely debunked by experts) led the former health secretary, Victoria Atkins, to use emergency legislation to ban the private prescription of puberty blockers to trans children? (The was the day AFTER the general election was called!)

#MaintenancePhase dedicated their June bonus episode to going HARD on the Cass Report, *and* they shared it on their main feed so you can listen to that one too! maintenancephase.buzzsprout.co

  7. Next, the brilliant podcast #MaintenancePhase have spent their last few episodes tackling the streaming pile of anti-trans bullshit of Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria! (This is a myth that has become very popular over the last few years, especially in the US, but spoiler alert: transgender "contagion" isn't real.)

  8. currently reading "You Just Need to Lose Weight" and 19 Other Myths About Fat People by Aubrey Gordon (co-host of #MaintenancePhase), which states:

"In 2004, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published 'Actual Causes of Death in the United States, 2000,' the study that first trumpeted that some four hundred thousand Americans died each year simply from being fat."

I already have some idea of how this story will go, from listening to Maintenance Phase's episode on The French Paradox*, and my little goblin brain wants to publish a study of Actual Causes of Death that proves that some millions of Americans die each year "under mysterious circumstances"

    * the TL;DR version is: "cause of death is very hard to actually determine and is influenced to a great degree by policies and how forms are designed"

  9. "Capitalism is not and will not be a source of justice for any of us."

After listening to every episode of #MaintenancePhase multiple times, I finally picked up Aubrey Gordon's book: "You Just Need To Lose Weight" and 19 Other Myths About Fat People. Gordon is an incredible writer, and I especially enjoyed the chapter on how body positivity is often caveated with the term 'happy and healthy' – something that, as a mentally ill person, I'm often *not*. #AffiliateLink uk.bookshop.org/a/3425/9780807

  10. I am listening to old episodes of # #MaintenancePhase and #MichaelHobbes casually mentions #HollowKnight. It the Marianne Williamson episode.

  11. So… let’s start with #MaintenancePhase, co-hosted by the above mentioned Michael Hobbes and “YourFatFriend” author and blogger Aubrey Gordon. The two take turns in presenting and debunking a famous diet or other wellness fad / book / influencer. It’s often tragic, but hilarious. Who would have thought that dismantling #FatPhobia could be this fun?

  12. At first, I felt some shame but now I feel pretty neutral about the fact that I use #ParasocialRelationships to ease some loneliness. I love being alone, in many ways it’s my preferred state. And, I love being with friends (one at a time.) For a lot of reasons, I haven’t spent time with friends much lately, so I’ve been replaying the #MaintenancePhase podcast as kind of “company.” I know I don’t really know these people, and they certainly don’t know me. And also, it’s comforting.

  13. I've been binging #MaintenancePhase, and it's really validating my cynicism towards wellness culture. This @guardian article is just further confirmation not to get too caught up in this stuff.

  14. Live your life so well that Aubrey and Michael from #maintenancePhase have zero interest in doing an episode about you.

  15. #cat folks, do you know about the origins of #pilates? I think you like this. Btw, there’s no need for content warnings on this #maintenancePhase episode (shocking, I know). pca.st/episode/f81c9048-9b1d-4

  16. On the outside chance that you aren’t already a fan of the #MaintenancePhase podcast (hosts Aubrey Gordon and Michael Hobbes are fucking hilarious and smart and and present exhaustive research on the health/wellness industry, with a focus on debunking its numerous myths and bogosities) their recent 2-parter on the infamous Oprah beef trial is a must-listen. And yes, they address Dr Phil. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/

  17. I know we have to get all the shit from the US eventually but the speed of the #SkinnyJab has been approved & actively promoted in the #UK has been disturbing and suspicious!

History is full of these "miracle" weight loss drugs and they all proved dangerous. Not to mention the impact of diverting supply from people who need it to manage real health conditions like diabetes etc!

It is a myth that *all* fat people are unhealthy!
What is unhealthy are eating disorders and extreme treatments triggered by societal pressure and biases.

I recommend the #MaintenancePhase podcast to learn more about the history of all these things!

"The market for obesity drugs could reach $54 billion in the next decade, according to the financial services company Morgan Stanley. #Semaglutide, marketed in the UK as #Wegovy, was last week approved for use in the NHS in England.

It's all just capilatism. They do not care about the risks to our health, it makes them rich.
