I don't usually write reviews on Goodreads, but I loathed "Magpie Murders" by Anthony Horowitz so much that it was called for.
"Ok, I'm done with Anthony Horowitz. "Moriarty" was underwhelming, and "Magpie Murders"was straight up infuriating.
For such a "prolific" author, the completely erroneous vocabulary choices are inexcusable. How, pray tell, was Joy's letter on the noticeboard in any way an admission of "infidelity"?
And the "golden age" detective / author name-dropping is bad enough without being repeated LITERALLY ad nauseum and then ONE MORE TIME just to make sure we GET IT and appreciate how clever the author is and how stupid he thinks his readers are. I feel like his (under-developed) female sleuth: clobbered over the head and broken ribs - not from being kicked - but the constant "did you catch that reference?" elbowing."

Finished watching 'Magpie Murders' on TVNZ+. If you like your murder mysteries the English way, with villages, flashbacks to a nostalgia-soaked 1950's, and twists aplenty, you will enjoy this six-part series.And Lesley Manville, who is plays an editor turned amateur sleuth, is very good. Just a bit twee for me. I'm more of a tartan noir fan myself, preferring more 'grit'.

I read an article today (link below) about dual timelines in novels and it set me to pondering how I could achieve something similar with my WIP. It involves an unsolved murder in 1938 and its connection to a murder in 2017, and now I'm debating if I should write them as separate #mysteries (a la #MagpieMurders), then combine them in some fun and creative way into one big honking #whodunit.
Nah. Who am I kidding? I'm too lazy.

This take is something new and exciting, but it's not all. The mystery, the writing, the characters, it's all good, and they make a very enjoyable read! -
