New update for Magnavody, my #MagnavoxOdyssey simemulator.

Adds on screen glyphs for gamepad and keyboard that map to the Odyssey control units to make it even easier to figure out how to use this weird but awesome console!

Anyone own or played an actual Magnavox Odyssey (the first home video games console)?

I have questions about when you hold down the reset button on a controller (what happens and if the cards change behaviour) and also about the momentum/dampening effects that happen on the ball.

Any help appreciated!

"Peacekeeper Command-O" (2018), a fun two player homebrew game running on my Odyssey emulator.

It's a bit like Missile Command (1980).

Only five physical copies of Peacekeeper were made but you can play it with Magnavody!

The Odyssey video console (1972) could only draw a few blobs so to provide variety Magnavox included semi-transparent physical overlays for players to stick on their TV screens (eg a green tennis court for a tennis game). Genius!

After a lot of prototyping, here's my attempt at a physical overlay in my simemulator, Magnavody (and a real life pic for comparison). I really want to capture the fidelity of the experience eventually.

It was curious to see the US version of this thing; the Magnavox Odyssey 2. It was called Philips Videopac G7000 here and I still have mine somewhere.

Some things I noticed were the power button that the Philips' version didn't have and the controllers' action button was red.

The controllers felt just as horrible as I remember from my childhood.

Massive Magnavox Odyssey erasure at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).

A wall of controllers and not a single awkward English Dial Device. Pong gets a mention but nothing about the nearly unplayable original Table Tennis. Even a dedicated "First Home Consoles" panel goes straight to Atari, skipping the actual first, Odyssey!

The weird thing is ACMI have a beautiful Odyssey in their collection but it's not on permanent display.

The aims:
Accuracy, authenticity, accessibility and fun

At the moment it only imperfectly plays "Table Tennis" (the first game) but I have special plans for overlays and homebrew.

On my journey as a game developer I've recently been diving into #retrogaming and #vintagegaming. Beautiful hardware, forgotten and underutilised game patterns, respect for heritage... it's a pretty wonderful scene.

Anyway, I saw on mastodon a toot by @Robavince about their #MagnavoxOdyssey homebrew game, Peacekeeper Command-O.

My first question was "What the hell is a Magnavox Odyssey?"

And so began my epic, well, odyssey!

I really love the controller for the #MagnavoxOdyssey. The very first home video game controller!

It is hard to use.

The early 70s design was quickly superseded by atari-like joysticks but it is better than the terrible remote-control hybrids of the late 70s.

It has three dials. Vertical, Horizontal and ... English.

What does the English dial do? It controls the spin on the ball. "English" is from billiards, either a corruption of French "angle" or the US calling spin an English technique.

I own a #MagnavoxOdyssey since 2013. From time to time I got it from the shelf to show the ping-pong game as a predecessor to #Pong. It was only yesterday when Torsten (@toroe) and I unpacked some of the other games and played them. Especially the #HauntedHouse #game was quite a fun!

Sadly the Video-Mod we did in 2014 is broken and the HF TV signal is quite bad. So it's time for the Odyssey to visit Thomas (@TheMediumIsPizza) ...

14 years ago, I met Ralph Baer in Pirmasens, where he donated one of his brown boxes to the museum there. I was so nervous, it was my first in-person interview with someone famous, but he was so calming and just all around a great man to talk to. In fact, when he noticed how nervous I was, he started asking me some questions to bring me on track. And though I was there to write an article for a small magazine, he took me as serious as the journalists from the big media houses. He never asked how large the circulation was. It was a great experience and I am glad that I left a day at the university to meet him.
