CW: Ramble about Reddit and Mastodon and federation
@jayeless this was a really nice read, thanks! I find myself looking for Reddit alternatives too these days, and trying to find it in the fediverse, where I already am anyways, seems like a logical step.
That said, I use mastodon very differently than how I use Reddit: Mastodon is my facebook/twitter Alternative, where I want to post about my life and read other people's posts about theirs. Reddit is where i go to learn about specific topics, hobbies, interests of mine, and engage in conversation about those interests.
The main difference is that I don't really care what appears on my feed in Mastodon: it's supposed to be the collected ramblings of the humans around me, which it is. For a Reddit-a-like, I really want to only see the most important posts, as voted on by the whole community. For those reasons I don't think I would want my Reddit-a-like to be federated? I don't like the idea of, for instance, the #magictcg community being scattered across a bunch of instances and not being able to at a glance see the most important posts about that topic. Sure, there's hashtags on the fediverse, but they don't show the most voted/favourites/boosted stuff first, and you know that you're not seeing everything because not every instance is federated to every other instance, and a lot of people only post to local and not global visibility.
I've been looking at places like cohost.org as the new centralised but open source Reddit. I don't think co-host will become the actual choice, so if anyone has suggestions pls let me know!

My favorite part of the LOTR X MTG stuff is all the weird racists coming out of the woodwork. It'll be really easy to spot them by just mentioning the set now, regardless of not liking it. Now I'll know who to not talk to super easily!

Made it to Mythic this month on Magic Arena. Ran a sweet Rakdos beatdown list with Ob Nixilis as the "finisher". Pretty fun games and a good diversity of enemies from aggro to control. I previously made mythic during Crimson Vow with mono black control before putting the game down for a year or so.
Of course had the most fun smashing the control decks (after a few failed attempts to make control work for me earlier in the month). Turns out it's a lot easier just to hit your opponents harder than they're trying to hit you ...
