Enjoying the 2022 Irma Vep quite a bit (altho Alicia Vikander is so far annoyingly lacking... I don't know... oomph? Maybe that's intentional).
But I think part of the reason I'm liking it is that I've recently watched both the 1996 film (with Maggie Cheung) and also the original 1916 serial Les Vampires. Definitely brings a lot of context to the series.

Rewatched the 1996 film #IrmaVep (still adore it) and then the HBO series pilot. What am I missing? I cannot see watching any more, it was so dull and promising only more tedium. Obviously I'm missing #MaggieCheung and the gorgeous chaotic 90s vibes. But why does this series have such glowing reviews?! How could Vikander hold a candle to MC?! Why use 8 hours when 95 minutes was so brilliant?

If they ever start handing out a Nobel Prize in Film, then #AnnHui deserves to win. Her stunning, semi-autobiographical film SONG OF THE EXILE (1990) is a poignant intergenerational drama about troubled relationships, diasporas & belonging. Re-watched this gem of a film last night. #BillWong's moody cinematography of late '80s New York & #SiqinGaowa's stunning performance are the standouts of FULL MOON IN NEW YORK (1989) dir. by #StanleyKwan. A quiet, melancholy film about displacement, urban alienation & connecting through loneliness. Haunting performances by #MaggieCheung & #SylviaChang too.

#OlivierAssayasโs miniseries adaptation (2022) of his own film #IrmaVep (1996) is terrific. "Too clever for its own good"? I'll take clever over corny or crap any day.
But the film is something else. And it stars the phenomenal #MaggieCheung. No spoilers, but the audacious ending blew me away. It leaves you with a sense of new beginning & infinite possibilities instead of mundane & manufactured closure. A stunning reminder of the possibilities of cinema & like the discovery of a new art form.
