"It’s tempting to want to sit back and enjoy watching the chaos muppetry cave in on itself for the second straight day, as a political party that can no longer make claims to be serious, or to have serious leadership, is left flopping on the beaches for the delectation of us all.

Except, of course, the events of Jan. 6, 2021 and Jan. 3–? of 2023 are not at all unrelated. Nor are they sequential points along a continuum that is leading us to a better place. Instead, they represent the locomotive and the caboose of the same train: Each is a point along a terrifying line of governmental failure; each is a subversion of the principles of lawful transition of power. But certainly they are moving in the same direction, and there should be no joy found in watching the present and past pancaking back on itself. In many ways, the events of this week should be as frightening to us as the events of two years past, if not more so. This, too, is an insurrection. That it’s coming—quite literally—from inside the House in 2023 should no more be grounds for popcorn and selfies from Democrats than the Capitol insurrection was in 2021. This is a profoundly serious systems failure, Trumpism without the relative coherence of Trump, and a triumph of nihilist anti-government fan fiction. And this go-round, those forces have a vote that is big enough to gum up the entire operation.

Jan. 6, 2021, was scary but inherently cartoonish, with the face paint and the faux fur and the weapons and the body armor. January 2023 comes in shiny tasseled loafers and constituent messaging. Instead of leaking floor plans to insurrectionists in advance, members of the radical wing of the GOP are demanding committee chairs.

Perhaps one difference is that this time, the ask—what they are fighting for—is actually less clear. On Jan. 6, amid the chilling cries of “Hang Mike Pence” and “Stop the Steal,” the ask was at least coherent: reinstate Donald Trump as president. The foggy MAGA ask of 2023? I have no idea. Power, sure. Fame and celebrity, definitely. Mumble mumble debt ceiling. OK. As John Boehner wrote in his 2021 memoir, the endgame now is chaos itself:

What they’re really interested in is chaos … They want to throw sand in the gears of the hated federal government until it fails and they’ve finally proved that it is beyond saving. Every time they vote down a bill, they get another invitation to go on Fox News or talk radio. It’s a narcissistic – and dangerous – feedback loop.

"How the same people who created 1/6 are spreading violence across the globe

More than two months ago I wrote that Steve Bannon is helping Jair Bolsonaro with a coup in Brazil. Bannon and his henchman, Kremlin propagandist Matthew Tyrmand, are very open about it.

Bannon has been convicted of Contempt of Congress and still has seen no consequences yet. The destruction in Brazil can be directly traced to a failure of the American justice system.

The death cult created in America by Mike Flynn and his co-conspirators has been exported in its entirety to Brazil. They even have their own QAnon Shaman.

Yesterday, while cable networks largely focused on an injured football player, one of the most astonishing attempted coups in recent world history played out in Brasilia. Supporters of the former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, attacked and took over the seats of power of all three branches of the Brazilian government, including their versions of Congress, the Supreme Court, and the White House.

QAnon and associated cults see Brazil’s insurrection as the exact same thing as 1/6 and universally cheer it on, conferring all of their symbols and fascist ideology to MAGA Brazil, referring to the rioters as “patriots.”

The cult refers to the duly elected president of Brazil as a “criminal.”

The roots of this insurrection go back many years, including this visit by Jair Bolsonaro to DC on 1/5/21 where he met with brainwashed seditionist billionaire Mike “MyFascist” Lindell.

Also, Ivanka. 1/5/21.

The Bolsonaro sons also visited the Nazi training company “88 Tactical” along with Donald Trump Jr. I wonder how many Brazilian insurrectionists were trained there.

On the same trip, Eduardo Bolsonaro visited Mike Lindell’s “Cyber Symposium” to learn all about how to spread Big Lie propaganda.

But yesterday, as all of this unfolded in the capital of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro was in, of all places, Florida visiting with Donald Trump. In a strange coincidence, the head of Brazil’s security forces was in Florida as well.

And what did QElon have to say about the violent overthrow of a democratic government: “I hope that the people of Brazil are able to resolve matters peacefully” — which is very different from supporting the duly elected president.

As it happens, Elon Musk met Bolsonaro in May and was “personally moderating tweets about Brazil’s election.

And Musk has been spreading Big Lie conspiracy theories about Brazil’s election by weaponizing his $44 billion “psyops cannon.”

All of this represents an open global insurrection, led by the same people who did it in America, including both the 2021 attack on the Capitol, and the second insurrection in Congress last week.

Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Fascism never stops on its own, it must be defeated.
