The prompt is #RobotMad Professor, “Robotronic” from "Under the Spell of Dub," 1997
Some of the biggest pioneers in modern recording were just trying to be efficient. In Jamaica, needing B-sides for reggae singles, recording producers started adding instrumental ‘versions’ on the flip sides - the A-side song with the vocal track removed, requiring no new recording.
As they became more creative and sophisticated, fading instruments in and out of the mix, adding back in ghostly touches of vocals, with use of heavy reverb often to hypnotic effect, they created a new genre unto itself, #dub, whose reach now extends far beyond #reggae.
I find that British dub producer #MadProfessor can get a little carried away with knob-twiddling, but nevertheless has produced many tasty morsels.
I have to chuckle over this one, which I take to be a self-aware reference to his tendency to such excess, as well as a good listen.
