Dock Ellis has shocked San Francisco by retiring before the season to pursue a career in California's premier basketball league. He will enter as a point guard and is an eligible free agent. The Seals have turned to Charlie Chang from Lemon Grove (outside San Diego) to take Ellis's place in a suddenly weak rotation.

Reliever Marten Reed was beaned by a pitching machine during Angels practice last Wednesday. He sustained a slight concussion but is expected to be available for the opener at home against San Diego on Friday, the 11th.
