I’d Rather It Sounded Worse
There are few things more surprising than the writing style of a university student. You would expect that after 12 years of school and acceptance into a university that students would know how to write sentences. But unfortunately, that skill seems to have been neglected in most situations. It may be excused in my nursing students, since science is the real passion here, but my wife, who was a college English instructor before we got married, talks about the lack of writing skills in most of the undergraduate students. I usually bemoan that our next generation isn’t learning how to write well, but honestly, I wish most papers I read today sounded a little worse.
In the era of AI, I only get perfect papers. Grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary; all taken care of by the AI caretaker who is editing (and often outright writing) the papers of today. Every sentence that a student writes can be plugged back into ChatGPT with a simple prompt, “Make this sound better.” The students can present to me totally polished papers that are easy to read, factually correct, yet totally soulless. When reading papers in batches, it feels as though I’ve just read the same paper 20 times, even though the subject matter changes. I actually don’t mind if they use ChatGPT as an editor for their papers, so long as its not doing the thinking work for them, but I’ve come to despise the perfection of every paper.
Every so often I get a paper with a voice. These papers are not the best written papers I receive. They’re often not as well done, they’re not grammatically perfect, but they have life. I can hear the student in the writing. And I love it. I’ve come to love the bumbling paper that proves that it was made by a human, despite all its errors. I love when I read an out of place, but totally human, anecdote thrown into a paper. These papers don’t even make the best grades (maybe I should think about that), but I love the fact that a real person took the time to write a real paper. They used their own brain to think their own thoughts. Even though it sounds worse, I prefer it.
The same goes with music, and video, and art; each one of these mediums was meant for man. We are made in the image of a Creator, so it only makes sense that we are little creators ourselves. The soulless sludge that is vomited into the social atmosphere is an assault on this fact. The AI music that is impeccable. The AI videos that look so lifelike. The AI blogs that are factually correct and grammatically perfect. I’d rather they were all worse, yet made by an image bearer trying to imitate his Father.
So here I am writing my imperfect blog, making music with my own quirky defects, hoping that more people resist the urge to let AI make it all right. I’m committed to things “Made by Humans,” and I want to encourage you to be too. If you write, make art, videos, or music, and you are resisting the AI renaissance, then keep it up.
