Whilst taking these photos, I tried to push the camera to its limits in terms of macro photography. These Hymenoscyphus fungi are about a millimetre in size. The Xiaomi camera struggles to cope with subjects of this size; it doesn’t capture the details. The same with insects – I can see springtails scurrying about in the moss, but they’re too small. The second photo shows a bizarre Conomelus, a very small beetle that peeked out at me whilst I was taking photos in the grass.

Today I headed into the marshes with a clear aim: to be in a place where no one goes and where I could have some peace and quiet. I was also hoping to find some mushrooms to photograph there. I love photographing Mycena mushrooms – those tiny, almost translucent ones, just a few millimetres in size. I’ve also got better at finding my way through the tangled trunks, in to the spot where I can sit on the barkless trunks, felled long ago by beavers.

Anoplotrupes stercorosus feeds on dung. It also collects it to line its underground tunnels, as food for its larvae. It’s certainly a magnificent beetle – one of those wonders of nature where its shell looks like metal. I often see it on forest paths; it isn’t actually that big, but its colour makes it stand out.

Maritime Sunburst Lichen, Xanthoria Parietina. Spotted this one on a tree on my street. Unlike a lot of lichens, it is somewhat tolerant to air pollution, apparently. I took this using my new camera's focus stacking feature that take multiple photos at different focal lengths and then combines them, which meant I had to use a tripod. Taken on a Canon R7 with a 100mm macro lens.
