Bloody Yanks, coming over here, sucking our sap ... 🙄
This is a rhododendron leafhopper (Graphocephala fennahi; 🇩🇪 Rhododendron-Zikade).
Native to the eastern US, it arrived on plants in the UK in the 30s & Europe in the 70s.
Ironically, it lives in fear of the harlequin ladybird, another invader.

A praying mantis (Mantis religiosa). The predatory insect is characterised by its remarkable triangular head, capable of turning 180 degrees.

Finally, an oddity.
By all accounts, this looks very like a rufous grasshopper (Gomphocerippus rufus; 🇩🇪 Rote Keulenschrecke) & probably is.
And yet one of the key markers of G rufus is that it has prominent white tips at the end of its clubbed antennae.
So is this actually something else? 🧐

Third, a small & very active leafhopper nymph sprinting around on the ivy.
Given the presence of just a few black spots, I'm guessing it's a bay leafhopper (Synophropsis lauri) rather than genus Fieberiella, the other common leafhopper here. The nymph of the latter has lots of smaller black spots.

Second, a wood cockroach (genus Ectobius) seen from a slightly unusual perspective – usually they're seen scuttling across the ground & photographed from above.
As for the species, always hard to tell – probably E vittiventris based on a fuzzy overhead shot, but maybe E pallidus or E lapponicus.

A few evening smash & grabs, meaning fairly poor pictures taken quickly and/or from a distance 🤷♂️
First is a female yellow-haired sun fly (Myathropa florea). The distinctive thorax markings give it its 🇩🇪 name, Totenkopfschwebfliege, although I also like the English alternative, Batman hoverfly 🦇🙂

Small scale can carry surprising visual weight.
Orange, black and red wing markings stand out sharply against the purple blooms in this #ButterflyPhotography set.

Oh, & one more thing: photographed with my phone on the inside of a window, this may be rare.
It's a female ichneumonid wasp in genus Perithous. P scurra is slightly more common, but the short ovipositor suggests P divinator is possible.
Only 2 prior DE observations on iNat, near Trier & Koblenz 😳

Lastly, one of the masters of camouflage – often hard to spot initially, despite their size & propensity for sitting out in the open.
This is a southern sickle bush-cricket aka the Mediterranean katydid (Phaneroptera nana; 🇩🇪 Vierpunktige Sichelschrecke).
Lacking a scythe-like ovipositor, it's a male.

And resting briefly on the ivy between feeds, this is a female orange-belted leafwalker (Xylota segnis; 🇩🇪 Gemeine Langbauchschwebfliege).
Quite common apparently, but it's the first I've seen, & unfortunately poorly photographed, as it was some way from me & quickly flew off 🤷♂️

Then several flies feeding on the ivy:
A common drone fly (Eristalis tenax; 🇩🇪 Mistbiene [not as pretty as it sounds]), which are frequently seen in my garden, & a male face fly (Musca autumnalis; 🇩🇪 Herbstfliege), quickly & poorly grabbed with the wrong camera settings before it flew off 🙈

Something old, something new ...
First, one of the more elusive Cylindromyia flies for me, albeit fairly common in this area.
This is a female Cylindromyia bicolor (🇩🇪 Zweifarbige Raupenfliege), calmly posing in the rose bush.
Easily ID'd, as it lacks the black abdomen tip most other species have.
