Over 1,100 tonnes of farmed salmon in Tasmania’s Macquarie Harbour have died between September and March, with no reported cause. Now, the industry’s expansion, which began in 2012, is under review by the federal environment minister due to concerns for the endangered Maugean skate. A group of scientists has called on the minister to prioritise the skate’s survival and help the local community transition away from reliance on the salmon farming industry.
