  5. On our trip back from Michigan's U.P. I shot this short video while crossing the #Mackinac suspension bridge (aka, The Mighty Mac)
26,372 ft long with the longest span being 3,800 ft.
Crossing this bridge and seeing the expanse of water below never gets old!

  15. Spending a few days at the family cottage, built in 1922 (before the Mackinac Bridge was built) by my great and great great grandfather on the Upper Peninsula.

Hope I can get some reading and writing done.

  19. I can see, right now from the Transit app, that tomorrow's bus service will have similar issues.

I hope that the powers that be at the #Mackinac Policy Conference put regional transit in their Thinking Caps because if you want to talk about a top population and economic vibrancy killer... this is it.

Bus service **needs** to be complemented by intracity and regional #rail for a population center this size (and one in which we hope to grow).

No other way to do it.

  21. Apparently, the report cited above is private… presumably only for the eyes of the #Mackinac Policy Conference attendees.

What the hell is that about?

We going to get serious here by putting all hands on deck, or are we going to continue to construct narrow-sighted policy amongst the few behind closed doors?

  24. Speaking of cold weather... Ever wondered how cold it gets in different parts of #michigan ? Here's the USDA Hardiness Zone map...Look how most of #Detroit and #GrandRapids are the warmest ( #Zone6a ) , and how the lake temperatures keep the left coast almost as warm up to #nwmi & the #straits of #mackinac. As you go north and inland you get down to #zone4a . these zones inform date of last frost and what plants survive the winter upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia #puremichigan #grmi #kzoo #swmi #miwx

  25. Just to be clear …

The French pronounced it “aw” but spelled it “ac”. The British heard it pronounced “aw” so they spelled it that way. Whichever way you see it spelled, technically it should always be pronounced “aw”. The word Mackinac/Mackinaw comes from from the Ojibwe word "Michinimackikong" which means great connection to land or place.

  29. @futurebird I moved to #Michigan about 20 years ago. There is a required course: Michigan 101. It teaches stuff like how to unlearn the English language. In what fresh hell does #Mackinac end with an /aw/ sound? Speaking of #Hell it's literally located here, and it does freeze over.
    Anyhow, I digress.
Michiganders use their hands for directions. It's required and you can get a ticket for not using these gestures.
Finally, please note use of blue color as #GoBlue is also a requirement.
