With all the talk about the iPhone 17 Pro Max being on Artemis II, it wasn't the only time an Apple product made it to space!
In 1991, the STS-41 took a #MacintoshPortable to space to evaluate the suitability of GUIs and other hardware like trackballs in space.
The Macintosh Portable's trackball didn't work well but in STS-43, they took another Macintosh Portable with a modified trackball.
(I think this here is Astronaut William Shepherd using the #Macintosh Portable.)

So, yesterday on @DavesVintageAppleTech 's stream I started modeling the side panel of the back cover for the #MacintoshPortable :

Finished way too late in the morning, but needs testing.
I also glued back some parts of the original, with reinforcement from a blister pack. UHU Plast seems to hold.

Printed a battery charger cradle for the Macintosh Portable. This will make it easier to maintain the lead acid battery outside of the machine when I’m not using it. The pogo pins for the terminals are on order.
The original SLA battery in the pic is long dead but the case can be used to host a new one.

An alternative is this, the Battery Eliminator from @TechByAndroda which installs in the modem slot and bypasses the battery all together. It uses super caps to act as the battery instead so you have use it while plugged into the power adapter. Quite a weight saver!

Powering the #MacintoshPortable is a struggle. It can’t be powered by the AC power adapter alone. It relies on the battery as the main source of power. The power adapter is really to charge the battery.
The original (long dead) 6V lead acid battery weighed in at over 2.5 lbs! A new replacement SLA pack from eBay weighs 1.75 lbs and lasts for about an hour.
A 6V LiFePO4 battery is just 1 lb and has 6 Ah of power, enough for 2-3 hrs with backlight!

Let’s look inside the #MacintoshPortable, a marvel of all plastic engineering. It contains no screws and requiring only a flat head screw driver to disassemble it. It’s also nerve wracking for fear of breaking brittle plastic.
The back holds the lead acid battery on the left and the right your choice of HD/FD or 2 FDs.
Here I’ve installed a #BlueSCSI V2 desktop along with the 50 to 34 pin SCSI adapter.
I’ve also installed a 8MB RAM card

Say Hello, World! to the new-to-me Macintosh Portable. This is the fancy backlit version (M5126). More luggable than laptop weighing in at 16 lbs. It’s just such a beast of a machine.
It comes with this even larger travel case with room for lots of extra gear.
