@fesshole This is a fabulous set up to the kind of B-movie horror that we love for #Monsterdon! Combining cheese, ants, a Spanish pool and a swimmer. We need some sort of radiation or toxic waste to be the #macguffin and some clever camera zoom work. Boom! An hour of fun for us all! :)

@pomCountyIrregs @mwt Thank you. I certainly don't fancy myself an essayist, but I confess that I do purposely mangle the language to make a point(†). As you point out, there is a tradition of doing this.

To be clear, this essay was #writingAdvice for #fiction #writers like myself suggesting that focusing on people performing or doing evil things is far more engaging (and horrifying) than a more distant defined or indefinite #evil institution, being, or force, i.e., a #MacGuffin.

Yes, I proceed to relate it to real life because when we don't think about why we are doing what we do, acting on reflex or as taught by rote or obeying authority, we can do bad things unthinkingly. As characters will in our stories. As authors, getting our readers to realize their awesome capabilities (in this case to perform evil) is just one of the services fiction writers perform.

I title my journals based on changing themes. They provide the cornerstone for the mise en scène of my writing. A month into a new book and I’ve got nothing. So, I’m trying to define the device. Is it a #fetish, a #muse, a #MacGuffin, a #redHerring, a #philosophersStone, a #huntingBlind, an #f(x)? What device do you use to better observe the ineffable? As a quasi “throw away,” what duty have we to identify with it, serve it, thank it, or let it go? #writersBlock #themeBlock #commodification

#writinglife: So a friend suggests an idea he really wants to read. I stupidly incorporate it into the current novel as it is an opportunity to generate a necessary #MacGuffin. The subplot involves naval matters, but I skirted having to detail it precisely because it matters little to the story.

However...

To make the plot insertion work...

I had to create incidents—and developed a handicapped unfairly maligned Ensign getting her first command on a mission designed to fail, but which turns out to be critical to the nation's survival.

Compelling.

Oh, shoot!

This morning I woke up unable to sleep in because I was plotting it all out in my head. Now I've written the first chapter and have to seek a reader with naval experience to make sure I don't #FUBAR naval life or procedure.
