  1. Remember Guatemalan cellist and composer Mabe Fratti, featured on 1001OA a couple years ago? New collab with US guitarist Bill Orcutt, excellent experimental mix of instrumental folk (with a bit o' singing by Fratti) and art rock, plus possibly one of the weirdest album covers of the year.

  6. Mabe Fratti – Se Ve Desde Aquí (2022, Guatemala)

As randomly chosen by survey* on Mastodon, our next spotlight is on number 968 on The List, submitted by troutboy.

From Guatemalan cellist and composer Mabe Fratti, this album is 38 minutes of transcendent experimental/avant-garde/ambient beauty, complete with gorgeous vocals, tape loops, vintage synths (including one rescued from a garbage bin), sax, and, of course, cello. In other words, right up my alley. If you were a fan of Gyða Valtýsdóttir’s Epicycle II, which we took at look at at the beginning of the summer, I think you’re going to love this too.

Fratti has since released another album, just this past June, so if you like this one, perhaps look up Sentir Que No Sabes as well.

    Happy listening.

*The survey choices that led to this spotlight were “Cause you got me, and baby, I got you”, “Babe”, and “I got you babe, I got you babe”, following the earlier survey that had “They say we’re young and we don’t know”, “We won’t find out until we grow”, and “Well I don’t know if all that’s true”. The second phrase was the winning selection but there was actually no album in The List with “babe” in the title/artist name (oops!), so the survey result was translated as picking the album with the closest matching word, i.e., “Mabe”.
