Звездообразование — это бурный и сложный процесс, происходящий повсюду во Вселенной. Однако большая часть этого действия скрыта облаками газа и пыли. Именно здесь на помощь приходят такие обсерватории, как космический телескоп Джеймса Уэбба («Уэбб») и Атакамская большая миллиметровая/субмиллиметровая решётка (ALMA). Они используют инфракрасное излучение и радиоволны соответственно, чтобы проникнуть сквозь завесу, окружающую процесс звездообразования. Команда под руководством докторанта Университета Флориды Таэхва Ю недавно использовала «Уэбб» для наблюдения гигантской области звездообразования в Млечном Пути — Вестерхаут 51 (W51). Она расположена примерно в 17 000 световых лет от Земли в направлении созвездия Стрельца. Собранные ими изображения и данные раскрыли множество тонких деталей происходящего там звездообразования. «С помощью оптических и наземных инфракрасных телескопов мы не могли проникнуть сквозь пыль, чтобы увидеть молодые звёзды», — сказал доктор Адам Гинзбург, профессор астрономии Флоридского университета. «Теперь мы можем».

M51: The Whirlpool Galaxy
The Whirlpool Galaxy is a classic spiral galaxy. At only 30 million light years distant and fully 60 thousand light years across, M51, also known as NGC 5194, is one of the brightest and most picturesque galaxies on the sky. The featured deep image is a digital combination of images taken in different colors over 58 hours with a telescope from Lijiang, China.

Da das Wetter heute nicht viel Spannendes hergibt, zeigen wir heute mal ein Astrobild, dass unser Kollege in den klaren Frühlingsnächten in Klingenthal im dunklen oberen Vogtland mit 12 Stunden Belichtungszeit gemacht hat. Das Bild zeigt #M51, die "Whirlpoolgalaxie". Zu sehen sind 2 kollidierende #Galaxien dabei wird die kleinere Galaxie von der größeren Spiralgalaxie "verschlungen". Das ganze geschah in einer Entfernung von etwa 24 Mio. Lichtjahren. #astro
